1 goal in 19 appearances for Gremio. What the feck are they on about when they mention a "strong strike-rate"?

Compared to Anderson-son-son, that is an amazing strike rate, in fact I carried out extensive research and concluded that Costa's strike rate is in fact over 10000000000000000000% better than Anderson's

Except that, at Gremio Anderson scored 6 goals in 19 matches... So really he's a goalscoring machine compared to Douglas Costa, by his current strike rate.

This Costa business bores me. I don't even know what the fecker looks like.

Manchester United get cold feet over £20m Douglas Costa

Pursuit of highly rated 20-year-old Brazilian forward cooled over exorbitant fee and involvement of too many agents

Manchester United have cooled their pursuit of Douglas Costa, the Brazilian forward, amid frustration at the exorbitant demands of Grêmio.

United opened negotiations with Grêmio last month, but discussions are unlikely to resume this summer unless the Brazilian club dramatically reduce a prohibitive £20 million asking price for the teenager.

The bid for Douglas, 18, was thought to be an exception to Sir Alex Ferguson’s claim this week that United would make no further additions to their squad because of inflated prices in the transfer market, but it is among several proposed deals that have persuaded him about the lack of value this summer. The number of agents involved in the proposed transfer is another factor that has led the club to walk away from the negotiating table.

He Costa too much!!!

The Guardian are reporting that Gremio have reduced their valuation, and we're fighting it out with Chelsae and Real for his signature.

Manchester United battle Chelsea in chase for £8m Douglas Costa

Manchester United are trying to salvage a deal for the Brazilian Under-21 international Douglas Costa but face competition from Chelsea as they try to persuade his club, Gremio, to lower their valuation of the midfielder. United are willing to pay an initial fee of £8m for the 18-year-old including various add-ons depending on his success at Old Trafford, but the deal looked to have faltered when Gremio opened talks by demanding £21m. The Premier League champions have made it clear they consider that to be exorbitant but, after several weeks of negotiations, Gremio have now relaxed their stance and the two clubs are attempting to reach a compromise for the latest player to be tagged in Brazil as "the new Ronaldinho".

An already complex series of negotiations has been further complicated by Chelsea's interest while Real Madrid have also been asked to be kept informed and Villarreal have submitted a bid of £6m plus add-ons. Manchester City had also shown tentative interest but have not followed that up with anything more substantial. The picture is expected to become clearer next weekend when the influential deal-maker Chris Nathaniel travels to Brazil to try to clarify with Gremio exactly what they will accept before reporting back to the player's admirers. United are considered to be in the most prominent position, with the player favouring a move to England, but Chelsea's interest is genuine and it could become a matter of which club is willing to pay the most.

For a deal to Old Trafford to materialise, Gremio will have to accept that United will not pay what they consider to be over the odds for a player who has only just broken into his club's first team. David Gill, United's chief executive, has already informed Gremio that a deal is impossible at the current price. Chelsea, similarly, are not interested unless the players valuation is slashed to a more realistic mark.

hope we get this lad, or someone of a similar level of skill. I think our team, stadium, and fans are perfect for a player who is willing to do the unexpected, no other fans/team will give the same adulation to these sorts of players.

An initial fee with add-ons makes perfect sense. I don't understand why Gremio haven't accepted that. Who in the right mind would pay 21M for an unproven 18 year old....city?

It seems like these Brazilian teams are sick of their youngsters getting poached, and in an effort to stop it, it seems to me like they are making a stance with this one by setting a ridiculous transfer fee.

Fair play to them I guess, if I was a fan, I'd want to keep him!

If you were a fan, yes.

But this is Gremio. They want to cash in. They dont care a damn about their youngsters getting poached. There is a steady supply on the production line.

The add-ons will insure they get the right amount of cash - only if he is good enough. It's just good business in my mind so United don't get ripped off. They should realise this unless they have something to hide.

Maybe Costa has been on strike more times than van Hooijdonk - hence a strong strike-rate

3 words - Mame Biram Diouf.
Diouf is a next year's signing. He will come on January and then on February the chances of him going to the African's cup is high.

I dreamt we sold Anelka and Henry and bought Costa to replace them on the wing...
I've got to stop reading the Sun before I go to bed.

If they have reduced their valuation then we may be interested again. Sir Alex doesnt want to get ripped off on players that he doesnt feel are worth their value. Douglas Costa is a very talented but unproven player. Personally i feel there is too much hype over him at the moment.

I cant believe there are so many Man Utd fans out there who are desperate for us to buy him simply because he might be 'the next Ronaldinho'. He very well might not be. At that price, its best to be sensible with our transfers unless we are totally convinced of their future potential.

 Really??

I thought they had a good side that was progressing nicely...
Came third in their pool to Algeria and Gambia, that means they miss out on the ACN and the World Cup. Had they beaten Gambia at home in their final qualifying match, they would have made the ACN and still been in contention for South Africa.

Ferguson goes cool on Costa

Reports suggest Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has cooled his interest in Gremio's highly-rated teenager Douglas Costa.

A story in the News Of The World suggests Ferguson has grown wary of taking his interest in the 18-year-old further because of fears surrounding Costa's private life.

Costa was arrested by Brazilian police earlier this week for driving without a valid license.

It has also been suggested that the teenager has recently been turning up late for training and leading a party lifestyle.

Last month it was reported that cash-strapped Gremio had placed a £21million price tag on Costa's head.

However, United were only willing to offer £7million for the player, plus a series of success-related add-ons if the player lived up to his undoubted promise.

Manchester City have also been linked with Costa, who has already represented his country at under-20 level.

Ferguson has already bought Luis Antonio Valencia, Michael Owen and Gabriel Obertan this summer.

Sounds like another Adriano or Ronaldinho. What happened to the brazillians that like to just play football.

Apparently he doesn't touch alcohol though, that's good. From today's NotW:

Costa, who does not drink, has already been criticised by his coach for his party lifestyle and is frequently late for training.

dunno... if he was pissed / hungover it at least explains why he is late for training...

the fact that he just cant be bothered to turn up is at least as worrying imo...

we dont need a lazy player who is all tricks and no end product... well not another one anyway

Seems right. Fergie doesn't like players that lack discipline. Ronaldo was disrespectful towards the club, yet Fergie has nothing but praise for him because he was such a disciplined player. No alcohol, the first who joins the training session, the last to leave it.

Talent is not enough, you need discipline to maintain a high level. Just look at the likes of Adriano or Ronaldinho - they wasted their careers because they didn't take their profession seriously and weren't professional enough.

Hailed as ‘The New Ronaldinho’ and claimed to be the subject of very intense haggling between Premier League champions Manchester United and Gremio. This young Brazilian is touted as the next big thing to be exported from South America. But who exactly is Douglas Costa? The Transfer Tavern asked Football Fancast columnist The New Voice of Football to investigate.

Armed with wheelbarrows full of cash, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is frantically trying to fill the huge chasm left at Old Trafford by the departures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez. Having signed Michael Owen and Antonio Valencia another name being heavily touted to arrive at the Premiership giants is 18-year-old Douglas Costa. A playmaker, who, despite having only a handful of senior games under his belt is already demanding a £20million price tag.

Indeed after the young Samba prodigy started to appear on the radar of some of Europe’s powerhouses. La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona together with Serie A side Juventus monitoring Douglas as well as United. Gremio quickly tied Douglas to a new deal at the Olimpico Monumental until 2013, with a buy-out clause of £20million last October.

Despite the attention, Douglas was modest in his reaction to being linked with some of the world’s biggest clubs, saying: “I don’t have think about this. I only have that to play football. I face this with calmness. I am not a star.”

However, Gremio always fully intended to cash in on Douglas and believe he is a star or at the very least a cash cow, which is why they moved quickly to tie him to a long deal, with the massive buy-out clause.

His agent confirming the interest from Europe after the playmaker starred in the South American Youth Championships earlier this year, where Douglas was the stand out player in the Brazilian side that won the tournament.

“We know that many people from various European clubs have come to Brazil to see Douglas,” said his agent in February.

“Some have seen him play for the Under 20 national side and since then we have been unable to declare our public appreciation. He showed many qualities and it is normal people will like him.”

Some reports suggesting that Ferguson is keen to broker some sort of deal for Douglas, but is loathed to meet Gremio’s buy-out clause and valuation of £20million. The canny Scot said to favour an instalment plan of payments for the teenager based on performances and development, which would start with an initial £7million down payment.

One other factor in whether Douglas arrives at United is the Brazilian’s reputation for being a bit of a party animal and is gaining just as much notoriety for his performances off the pitch as on them.

Douglas arrested last week for driving without a valid license, something he has already been fined for by the Brazilian constabulary and although the teenager insists he doesn’t touch a drop of alcohol. Douglas is still apparently late for training on a regular basis. How would that go down with Fergie?

So the Brazilian represents somewhat of a headache for Sir Alex, but should he decide take a gamble and successfully negotiate the passage of Douglas to England. Just what would United be getting in a Brazilian, that is not going to come cheap? The ‘New Ronaldinho’ they say?

Well there is no doubting the youngster has something about him, good technique together with excellent vision. However, it is surely too much to be hailing a player, who has made less than 20 senior club appearances as the next Ronaldinho.

This lack of experience is said to be the main sticking point in Ferguson shelling out a bundle of cash along with his off the field antics. Although to be fair to Douglas, you can only perform at the level you are played at, with his transition into the senior ranks at the Tricolor this season effortless after winning the Campeanato almost single-handed for the Gremio Under-20 side last year. Douglas having no problems to date in stepping up in class and starting to show more signs of being a genuine player than promising prodigy.

A left-sided player, who like Ronaldinho has a bundle of tricks up his sleeve and at 18, has plenty of time on his side. On the surface Douglas looks like a very good prospect. Good enough to fill the void left at Old Trafford by Ronaldo? Possibly a bit soon for the Brazilian and should he arrive at United, will be nurtured and developed in the way Ferguson sees fit.

However, if Ferguson can lure Douglas to England by only making a small dent in the £80million currently burning a hole in his pocket from the Ronaldo sale. Then United might yet again have found someone that has the class and trickery to continue to feed the fans at Old Trafford the diet they have been used to under Sir Alex.

As with all things time will tell. But should Douglas arrive in the Premier League, will he fly with his tricks and Brazilian flair? Or will the weight of expectation of following in the footsteps of Best, Cantona, Beckham and Ronaldo cause the teenager to die on his backside?
