As much as I really rate, Donny.. I'd have preferred Grealish which almost certainly will not be happening now. Shame
same, but Villa staying up and slapping a huge price tag on him effectively killed that. Shame indeed, would have loved him at United as well.
The fee villa want would most certainly bring an end to us getting Sancho mate. It’ll all be fine in the end.

Given the reporting this summer it seems like Ole might be switching to having Fred as a holding mid/DM option full time with Matic which might make some sense until we find a long term successor for Matic given his excellent workrate.
VDB would add more quality further up in the midfield in the event of injury or even during any occasion where Brogba might need some rest
If that’s the case then great and I’ll fully back that.
Just worry that after this is announced we might get the dreaded brief about dropping the pursuit of Sancho.
There’s one signing that elevates us in this window and I was hoping we would secure him first and then move on to signings like this, but vice versa I’d still be over the moon with.
I think it might mean Sancho is off but I obviously hope not.
I would imagine our midfield backup situation would be VDB/Bruno, Fred/Pogba, Matic/McT which is actually sweet apart from a proper DLP prospect.
VDB, Brooks/Grealish, left footed centre back (who could also possibly fill at left back in emergencies) would at least address a few of our glaring issues and we wouldn’t be spending an awful lot if we sell a few. Sounds fairly plausible.

squad depth? Van De Beek's in-game intelligence is a lot higher than Fred and McTominay. This will be a terrific signing. He almost reminds me of Muller (even though they play completely different positions) with flying under the radar, not flashy and gets the job done.

Admittedly I need to see more of him myself, just never seemed a brilliant player when Ive seen him.
He was great in that run Ajax had in the CL, mainly arriving late into the box with a goal.
Just not sure where he gets into our starting 11.

I watch Ajax maybe 15/20 times a year, and watch most all Dutch NT matches.
A good place to start is Fred, he's quite a similar player, decent at everything.
DVB is four years younger, has a much higher ceiling and is a better player right now.
Fred is 5 foot 7, DVB is 6 foot, so 5 inches taller and maybe 20/25 lbs heavier.
Fred is faster, although DVB is better at pressing and counter pressing space and angles so I think thats about equal.
DVB has better shot but dont expect too many goals. Passing ability is about equal but again DVB is just a more intelligent player.
His defensive qualities are about equal but he's just a bigger guy so more physically imposing.
In our system I would imagine he would rotate in the 2 CM behind bruno and a big plus is being able to play CAM if we rest Bruno.
I dont quite see how we keep Bruno/Pogba/Matic/Fred/Mct/Mata/Lingard/Perriera + DVB, happy since they all want to play in a midfield 3. In my mind I would have gone after a more defensive CM like Tonali which would mean letting Pogba start as an 8 but also play a 10 when we rest Bruno.
Overall I would be much much happier with us getting him than Grelish but again Tonali would be my #1.

I hope this means more funds for Sancho as we are not getting Graelish. Could, however, also mean that we have moved on from Sancho and concentrate on other targets. Him and Sancho takes a lot of funds.

Thanks for the lowdown. You say he's quite similar and essentially a more beefed up version of Fred. Could the two play in midfield together, or would he be more suited to partnering McTominay/ Matic?

Well I am probably the same as you where I’ve only seen him play (on TV) like 8-10 times.
Unlike you, I’ve been very impressed when I’ve seen him. I like him a lot. Lots of little clever passes around the final third. Nobody is as good as Scholes, but he reminds me of Scholes a bit.
We will see. I want him and I want Solskjaer to get every player he wants. And then we can see how he does in the PL
I think a midfield 3 with Fernandes and Pogba could work. Pogba and VDB behind the more advanced Fernandes.

We seemingly shut that down the very next day the exit news broke if I'm not mistaken. I saw reports dismissing club interest in that deal which is understandable given that maybe 2 clubs in the world could realistically afford it
Have yet to see those interest dismissing/'moving on' reports when it comes to Sancho though...
Whether or not he’ll be brilliant for us or a complete waste of good money which could have been used to pay someone to take Lingard off our hands is something only the future will be able to answer. However, we do need depth in the midfield, which I think he’ll easily provide. He could be a cover for Pogba or Bruno. Also, while he is no peak Matic, he is no stranger to the DM position, so he’ll be very useful there as well. Last but not least, he could finally fill the Sneijder-shaped hole in all our hearts. I’m optimistic about his prospect of being a success for us, so I’m definitely looking forward to his arrival, and frenklie, so should you. In the meantime, let’s not beeker amongst ourselves.

Wasn't overly impressed in the games I've seen him in, Ziyech and De Ligt were the ones that stood out the most (well them and Blind )
