same, but Villa staying up and slapping a huge price tag on him effectively killed that. Shame indeed, would have loved him at United as well.
The fee villa want would most certainly bring an end to us getting Sancho mate. It’ll all be fine in the end.
oh we can have Grealish, but we'd need to pay around 35/40 more. and I don't think Grealish is worth around 70m.
You watch Grealish go to someone else for £55m this window. It's a typical case of UTD tax. Us getting fleeced as per usual.

Donny is a good midfield option for us and I think he will play as a #6/#8 in a midfield 2. I know he can play #10 too but he isn't best there. I'd say we need attacking players more than that position. As it stands we have 3 good attacking players for 3 positions. After that we have nothing. Grealish would have been great as Rashford and Bruno have zero competition.

Seriously, what does 'monitoring the situation' even mean in football transfer terms?

Watching with interest as to whether someone else comes in for him? If that's correct it would suggest not someone high on the priority list

We'd never move on to Fellaini unless we've sorted out the Bale transfer

The transfer window we did consider getting Bale from Spurs, we didn't end up getting him and we did end up with Fellaini that transfer window. So I'm not sure what you mean.

Was talking about the monitoring part.

Why would ajax pull VDB from a game if we were just monitoring the situation. Ajax basically confirmed he's almost off
Their coach admitted as such. Ajax players have never been as naive to say they're a 'one club player' then hand in a transfer request. The fans and players have always been realistic that they can earn shed loads away from the Netherlands and the club benefits from such transfers and invests back into their youth system

Grealish is the better player and would cover Pogba, Bruno and Rashford, if we’re still getting Sancho, he can cover Bruno, therefore what’s the need for DVB, unless we aren’t getting Sancho.
I agree Grealish is better but I thought the fee for VDB would be around £30m where as Villa are looking for £80m. Value wise, VDB seems a better option even at £40m I think.

It's just their way of tacitly announcing a clubs interest in a player without being held accountable if a deal breaks down instead of full on claiming it's on. They leave that to the foreign journo's who usually break this sort of thing much earlier and the UK journo's wait for the club in question to officially confirm things first before sticking their necks out.

Ajax's coach Ten Haag himself confirmed as much in terms of negotiations being ongoing and VDB almost being off during their match against Frankfurt earlier

Funny how all this stuff about us watching him and being "evidently" interested comes out when our interest is reported from another source. Where was this guy reporting on this before if we have watched him for many months and our interest is "evident"? I don't think Stone is reliable at all.

Begs the question as to why he hasn't broke this news before now then? Starting to think this guy isn't the be all that he's made out to be

Could it not be that he's known about this passive interest for a while and now that the British press present it as a scoop and he gets bombarded with questions, that he responds in a measured manner. Seems the club has briefed to reign in expectations.

Depends how much faith you put into him. He's well respected but even he is only as reliable as his contacts in football. He's never professed to be the Oracle, nd he has reported accurately on a lot of deals

He's not a Manchester United specific journalist. He breaks news all the time for different clubs around Europe. Just because he doesn't have the first information for this doesn't mean he knows feck all

what is he actually good at? Im looking at his stats and he has an average pass success rate at 82%. Is he just a midfielder that can play all positions but isnt an expert in one role? This transfer doesn't make any sense to me.

40m euros for Van de Beek is a terrific deal whose played Champions League football as well. It's time to be ruthless and show Pereira, Lingard and Fred the door.

There's been reports of our interest in signing him since the January window tbf so it's not like it's out of the blue or he's never been on our radar, he just probably didn't think that there was anything concrete to it until recently.

'ITK' accounts and the fish papers have talked him up to us for months now. Journo's like Fab are usually a bit more careful and measured in terms of the info they relay given the info they've received on where things might stand on a particular transfer, he rarely ever speculates

Just been doing some reading on Dutch newspapers and forums. Most media and fans see him going to Utd.

Ajax fans don't seem to bothered if the fee is right. Good player, but disappears a lot in games. He's better than Pereira or Lingard either way.

You should need to spend 40m to improve those two.

Personally I think Grealish is overrated in terms of ability and price. If he goes for 55m then good luck to him. I'm not sure Liverpool,City need him which leaves the next group of Chelsea,Spurs,Arsenal,Leicester. Who out of that lot will spend 50m+?

Not a chance that VDB is left out of the squad because a club are 'monitoring' him.

This is further along than that.

Style-wise, he's similar to Davy Klaassen, but in terms of performances, he's much better. He's as energetic as Klaassen is, but he's a better dribbler, more comfortable under pressure, and also has an eye for goal like Klaassen.

So the "development" is that we have contacted his agents for weeks? In that case why is Sancho still playing?

He is not good enough. I hope we save our money. Is he better than McT, Fred and tired Matic? Yes. Is he 40M better? No. Signing VDB would be repeating the mistake we have done too often since SAF retired – overspending for average players.

IMHO you’re comparing him to the wrong players. Is he better than Mata, Lingard or Periera, yes. Does he have a possible starting slot against City or Pool in a a crunch game you’d hope to win? Not a chance.

It will be exactly this. It's fairly well known we've had some interest in him for some time, but it's never been anything more than that.

and physically stronger

If and it’s a big if we do sign him it’s a great bit of business for €40m.

Exactly the kind of creative and hardworking midfielder to compliment or swap in and out with Pogba/Bruno.

I don't know how many 'bargains' there are where Utd are concerned. He could be better than Herrera..you know that guy who people thought bossed the UCL final

From memory Klaasen is quite slow isn’t he? I never thought he was going to suit the Prem. VDB has a great engine and is very good at pressing. The key thing for me is the tempo he plays at, very one touch, flicks around the corner, much like Bruno.

If Ajax have left him out of a match then it has to be closer than just speculation.

The manager even talked about it pre game so it's clear something is happening. Whether it's us or Barca though, guess we will see.

This could be a good move, depending on the price. I assume its to have coverage for Bruno/Pogba. For me we need an central attacking creative midfielder regardless of Sancho and more urgently than a defensive one. We already have 3-4 players to fill in the defensive/holding B2B role.

I would prefer Grealish though, more experience in the premier league & more versatile can cover LW/RW also.

But if we could snatch van de beek as a squad player for cheap, maybe we have money for Sancho also.

Yeah, he plays at a faster tempo than Klaassen does because of his technique. Klaassen isn't super slow, but his lesser ability on the ball slows him down and limits his productivity.

Obviously he (and other journos), seeing the speculation, reached out to club sources, and this is the brief they got.

Or Madrid...

You can rule out Barcelona. They haven't inquired about him recently. It's either us or Real Madrid (who've also monitored the situation for the past several months).

That's just it. Even when we were close to shgning Harry the man was still starting pre season games. Bruno played the weekend before. For them to pull him out the squad and say Yeh it looks like someone wants to sign him... Clearly the deal is very close with whoever he's going to

Stone never breaks news because everything he gets is straight from the club.
