I see him as in the mould of Lampard, though not saying he is as good. His general technique is good, both feet too, but he is not an especially skilful player. And he is definitely not a midfield anchor.
We badly need squad depth. We're painfully thin in that regard. VdB would cover for both Fernandes and Pogba. It's a no brainer signing and hopefully we get him for a reasonable fee.
He's a lot better than our other options off the bench.

Weird transfer this one, we have Fred and Mctominay who can both come in and do a decent job in midfield so although he is clearly a better option VDB really isn't one of our priorities. Also weird that he chose us when he knows he won't be a definite starter. Anyway every additional quality to the squad is welcomed!

I think the reaction seems to be lukewarm as we haven't bought Sancho or a rw as of yet, if this was announced after I think there would be more of a positive vibe.

Mctominay is cover for Matic. Fred and Donny will be cover for Bruno and Pogba.

With AWB as the only option down the flank? We'd come 7th or 8th mate.
Would obviously mean no Sancho and One of Greenwood or Rashford sitting out too.
Diamond is a non starter for us. Our fullbacks just aren't good enough.
Not for me, mate. I just don't rate him. We need midfielders who are comfortable on the ball in tight spaces and when pressed, and Donny is another CM who lacks that.

No we won’t be playing diamond. To play diamond you need attacking productive full backs. We absolutely don’t have that. Especially not with AWB.
De Beek can play numerous positions. He will get all the minutes Lingard, Pereria and mata would have got. Thats a lot of minutes.
When I mean skills, I don't really mean flair. I mean his passing, vision, keeping the ball under pressure etc.
