Easy to say we dithered. More likely he's not a first choice option or he prefers Barca with their historical Dutch/Cruyff connection. It just went too quiet for us for a couple of months which is telling.

Pjanic is a deep laying playmaker and they have De Jong for a similar role. They'll be looking for an attacking midfielder who can connect that midfield to their attack and Van De Beek fits that role pretty well.

Ajax has that style that makes average players look like class so it can go either way. He could very well end up as Davy Klaassen, but for the 35M he's very well worth the punt, specially considering he can play as CM and CAM where we desperately need depth.
