People often criticise Ole for not using Donny but, alot of fans also struggle to see how he fits into this team?

Most people say we need a DM / DLP, which means even less chance for Donny. I struggle to see what position he can play this season.

It is clear Ole doesn't rate him but I don't understand why don't you just sell him then. Could have invested in a dm. Hate this talent hoarding that he does. Should have also sold lingard.

Funny how Everton want him. You’d think they were once bitten twice shy with Davy Klaassen.

McTominay is entry-level Michael Carrick, he's a perfect Manchester United squad player mold.
? He's absolutely nothing like Carrick. Their strengths are basically polar opposites of each other.

I am nothing compared to van Basten in football, but I respectfully disagree. Donny was one of the best player of that sensational Ajax team.

My theory was that, as I already stated, VdB was bought to be paired with Matic. The Serbian’s contract was extended around the same time IIRC.

However, after reviewing Ajax 2018/19 campaign, I admit I was wrong.

Donny played as 8 in 4-3-3 and 10 ahead of Schone and de Jong in “Tadic-variant” (https://www.theconventionalplaymake...ine-role-and-ajaxs-midfield-is-very-efficient).

He is a versatile player who was bought as an ideal sub for Bruno until Pogba leaves. With Pogba most likely off, we might buy a helluva of DM and play DvB and BF18 as 8s in 4-3-3. I hope so honestly. Donny is a great player, and I want to see him more often.

Which talent hoarding does Ole do? If anything, we've been deadwood hoarding for far too long. You don't win anything with just having a first XI that is talented.

Very strange comparison. Nothing alike in anything they do.

Carrick
- Not a hard tackler.
- Not physical in game.
- Deep lying play maker.
- Great range of passing long and short.

McTominay
- Physical part big part of his game
- Drives forward with the ball at feet
- Passing lets him down and not a strong point.
- Not really a play maker.
- He is probably more comparable to Darren Fletcher than Carrick.

In terms of his playing style, that would be great. I think Donny would be a great foil for Bruno. Pogba and Bruno are both high risk players, which makes it hard to pair them up in a 4-3-3. Donny is much more conservative compared to those two, which might make a better balance. Donny might let us control the ball outside the opposition box more carefully, leaving it to Bruno to always try making the breakthrough.

The problem is not his playing style though, its his performance level. Donny is in the vicious circle of not playing well enough to get games, and not getting enough games to play well. Even if we got a top draw DM into the club, it would be one hell of show of faith for Ole to promote him to the first team.

This narrative that we have to switch to 433 for DvB to be able to function in our midfield which barely functions most matches with him sat on the bench watching is complete and utter nonsense. The guy played every CM role to a high level for a quality Ajax side.

If OGS actually thinks Donny could be worse than Matic or Fred were versus Southampton then it begs the question of whether or not he even understands just how bad those two were versus Southampton. And Fred wasn’t much better versus Wolves.

I don't think this is entirely the case. I think Ole does rate him, just not as highly as he rates other players.

I think Donny was bought a) to rotate with Bruno and reduce Bruno's workload and b) to replace Pogba in the squad. His problem is a) when he has played at #10 instead of Bruno he has not shown his true self and b) United never sold Pogba as I'm sure they were anticipating doing. Look around Old Trafford there's virtually no pro-active marketing of Pogba at all. I don't even think he's on the giant poster. Clearly the club thought awhile back that Pogba would be off and bought Donny as an option in case it happened.

Personally, I can understand the reasons we bought Donny and I can understand the reasons he does not play. Fred is a poor defensive midfielder, he's much better hunting the ball, but Fred does a lot more defensive work than Donny. So I can understand why Donny didn't play at Wolves. Southampton you can argue about. However, Fred was coming off a good showing against Leeds going into Southampton. It would have been harsh to drop him.

Donny's agent is right about Pogba moving back into midfield being an issue for Donny. Because Ole is never going to play a two man midfield of Pogba and Donny, and he's never going to willingly drop Bruno. And since Donny aint a defensive midfielder then it leaves no room for him. When Pogba eventually leaves, which I think most of us know is inevitable, Donny will probably play more. However, until then he's going to have to be patient.

We've got to be brave and try him in the double pivot in CM sometime. I just don't see why not. It's not like our other options there are overly convincing.

The question I have is why hasn't Donny been moved on? He clearly had offers and Ole blocked the move.

Pre season went with Matic and Donny who played relatively well then we start with McFred, win and change it to Matic and Fred. Ole said Matic deserved the start as he was the best player in pre season, well then that clearly shows he doesn't rate Donny.

Why have a player in the squad you will NEVER use? We know Ole will never play donny, he has had numerous chances and he seems to not even try him out.

I think there could be some truth to the fact that him being used to fast one touch passing, is the reason he is having trouble adapting to the team.

It looked similar with Sancho.

That however is more of a issue for the team / coaches than the player.

I remember when Ferguson decided that we should be more of a fast one touch team. Even someone like Cleverley improved his passing massively. Who doesn’t remember the amazing fifa like goal against City in the Community Shield.

If anything we should try to get back to that. Many of our players have terrible passing stats, even some of our darlings like Bruno.

Fast direct one touch passing would also make it easier for us to unlock teams that just sit deep.

Agents comments are embarrassing.

Basically says he doesn't think Van De Beek is good enough to break in if he's worried about Pogba being moved to CM.

If you take your chances, you'll stay in the team. End of. Solskjaer isn't going to give handouts.

Nothing wrong with what the agent said. This whole deal is bizarre. Manager doesnt rate the player, fine, then allow him to move on and play.

That is just realistic, Donny is a decent player but Pogba is one of the best.

Ofcourse it would worry Donny/his agent that Pogba will be used as a cm.

Really? Finishing 3rd and 2nd in his first two full seasons from being the perennial 6th best club at the time? And lets not pretend that there were not a lot of very good games and performances in there. Yes sometimes when we don'l gel we look like we can't string 3 passes together, but when we find our feet we're a very good team that plays a very explosive and attacking brand of football. And for the most part all of our transfers under Ole have been good to some extent. I'm fairly sure VDB will end up being fine as well, but if he doesn't he'd be the exception rather than the norm and that would be on him.

Finishing 2nd and 3rd is our aim now? Good luck with that. It's been 10 years since we last won the league title and I forsee a longer wait for that now. Been there, done that the last time we waited 26 years for the title.

As for performances, yes, we have had a few games where we have played good football, but how about some consistency with that. An overwhelming majority of them have been shit on a stick football.

.

I think this season will be a defining season for Ole. He's either gonna be the man or the man before the man.
I'd take either scenario in honesty, just hope he's not the man before the man before the man.

Goldbridge is an absolute imbecile, you're not adding good credibility by posting his videos!

He is an imbecile for talking sense? What has he said that makes him an imbecile?

Other clubs probably only wanted to loan him and that’s why he hasn’t been able to leave, I don’t think the confidence is there from Ole/Coaches that he could perform at any club in the PL and obviously this would impact his resale value.

I disagree with his line of thinking that Ronnie will play mostly LW. I think we'll mostly see him up top rotating with Cavani. Ole has shown he's capable of benching Pogba. Which is something that can happen if he thinks it's not a game for him to play in CM, and our wingers are in terrific form (Rashy, Greenwood, Sancho).

We have a juicy thick squad!

Why is there so much activity in this thread at all times even VDB isn't playing? It's not like we can praise his performances or scapegoat him for dropped points.

Do people actually think that he's the solution to our midfield problem or something?

He's an imbecile because he chronically talks rubbish. He says stupid things like, Wolves didn't deserve to beat us, whilst also saying we were lucky against them. He has child like logic on buying United shirts, he thought Ronaldo is better equipt to lead and coach the team then Ole.

He just says a lot of over the top bullshit that's so exaggerative that when he says an occasional fair point its likely by accident.

Given that it doesn’t appear anyone enquired about him until deadline day then I’d wager not.

You can put someone up for sale a lot earlier, ask his agent to find him a club etc.

The fact that he's adamant about playing and was willing to go to Everton on loan is good for us in the sense that's it not going to be hard to shift him. To think that a Sevilla/Barca/Wolfsburg/Atalanta etc wouldn't be interested like some others have alluded to is nuts.

Hmm

So if Everton wanted him and were willing to offer a decent fee (that much cannot be confirmed ofcourse, the fee) and Donny wanted to go why couldn't we have sold him and with the James cash actually signed a CDM, a position we desperately need ?

I think easily we could have got 30-35m for Donny plus with James sale 25m and really if we sold Lingard for 15m to WH thats a total of roughly 65-70m , close to enough for Rice at least , a player we could really be doing with.

He also said Donny looked fantastic whenever he played which is obviously bs.

However Donny did have a couple of really good cameos/games, which some of people seem to have erased from their memories.

Talks were held with senior figures at Everton... that's far from an official bid. Probably wanted him on loan.

The Everton deal that was blocked was a loan move. Easy to orchestrate on short notice, because Albers said it only came about after the Ronnie signing and Everton's DoF Brands is a Dutchie.

Some are asking (me included) why isn’t he at least given a proper try out when people are screaming negatives about McFred. Some are even saying throw Lindelof in there which is even more crazy when we have an experienced midfielder sitting on the bench in VdB

I understand why posts are being made to begin with, but it's been more than 1000 in the last 3 weeks. It seems like an over-reaction :p

Ole doesn't strike me as overly stubborn with his selections, nor does he pick weird teams. If Matic is being picked ahead of VDB, then you know that he hasn't done a good job on the training ground or the few times he's played last season.

Yeah, it bothers me a lot when people try to say Donny isn't a good player

I watched that Ajax team a lot. I wouldn't call them a 'great' side but it was a good side which beat some big teams. Donny was my favorite player to watch, he could sit ahead of the DM's and dictate things in the final third. He is a very good player and I genuinely think he could be one of our best once he does get going.

Whether one believes Donny is a shite Carabao Cup player or worthy of starting regularly for United, it’s clearly the case that Ole has no use for him. He’s never starting over Bruno and Pogba in a meaningful match, and he’s evidently not preferred to Lingard, Fred, McTominay and Matic.

We should have loaned or sold him before the window closed.

Ole screwed the guy over. VDB's not even 2nd choice in any position in the team, will just warm the bench and play cup games will Jan when he'll eventually agitate for a permanent sale / loan.

What do you mean? Donny has never been the type of player to dictate play. He's more of a Lampard with his clever movement and short passing.
