With Laudrup, Brehme and Matthaus gone the Danish and Bayern links offered a lot less. Completely ignored Ajax, I assumed he probably had a link back to 70s there but overlooked Rijkaard.

It's simple really: I didn't watch the Dutch league so my Lerby is a mid-80s Danish and Bayern one while my Rijkaard is a late 80s Milan/Dutch guy. Unless I look into it, I've no idea what they were jointly up to in 1981, completely off my radar.

The Romanian could have worked as a more defensively sound Busquets, but I don't really have a clue how he would interact with Passarella. It could be beautiful or an unmitigated disaster.

I am glad we are in the modern era though. Hopefully we'll be back a few years by the time my next turn comes.
Easier to sell average defenders from back then rather than the modern average ones.

I know, I remember that Toyota Cup Final against Nacional. Just irrelevant to the point re: Rijkaard and has little to offer bar one rather unimpressed player. Maybe he caught the early days of someone else?

DM dropping to CB with a libero IMO is a great fit in terms of mechanics, especially with someone like Passarella who is uber attacking as a CB.

Personally I’d love that and already have tried it with Belodedici and Zakarias in previous drafts.

I had access to the Dutch/Barca sweeper in addition to the Romanian. Like anto said, I was not very sure on the balance of playing them together. And I would have preferred to have Rijkaard over either. ;)
 
Anyone interested in having a new random player (like Schmeichel was) to start the chain when the order gets reversed? Will remove the issue of a double pick as well.
