Dodo

"the most naturally gifted ball-playing CB in the world"

Just thought I'd quote that one last time.

Two games.

One at full-back.

On the telly.

Classic.

Are you intent on reading things incorrectly?

I've made sure to stress the point that both times I've seen him play, he's been played at left back because he's only played at left back during the tournament and I've also queried whether his future does in fact lie with being a central defender as he doesnt look very strong and you'd have to think that playing a central defensive role would restrict his chances of displaying his passing and dribbling ability.

I've never seen him play at CB. Just like I've never seen Ronaldo play at CB.

But if we converted Ronaldo to play at CB I know he'd be the most gifted ball-playing CB currently playing, at least that I've seen.

He wouldnt suddenly play like Carragher when he's passed the ball. He'd still retain his tehcnical ability no matter where he was played on a football pitch. He just wouldnt play some of the other more defensive roles as well as he does his current role.

Am I the only one worried by the amount of foreign youngsters we are signing? If they all make it (which I doubt) we could have a team like this:

Foster
Rafael Dodo Evans Fabio
Ljajić Possebon Anderson Tosic
Welbeck Macheda

Welbeck, Evans and Foster the only British ones.

Gibson over Possebon

time for british lads to put down their playstation controllers and play football in the streets nonstop from the moment they can walk.

then again, we also spend big money on proven british players so the side you have posted will never occur. for instance, i wouldn't be surprised if we signed ashley young for stupid amounts of money in the future.

Ah sorry, my mistake.

You've made that bold claim (the one about becoming the "best-ball playing CB in the world") after not watching him play a single game at centre-back.

Thanks for clearing that up.

He wouldnt need to become it.

Just playing at CB would ensure it. The same as with most skillful players, if they were to be converted to a central defender. They dont face too much competition because generally CBs arent the best ball-playing players. There are other skills a central defender needs to be good at his job and generally these are what are looked for first. And with these aspects of the game Dodo isnt all that outstanding.

This claim is no more bold than saying that if we converted Ronaldo into a Goalkeeper, he'd be the fastest goalkeeper in the world.

good news, i felt like United needed another defender that doesnt need to play every week. just one to cover for our annual defensive injury crisis. does this extinct bird guy have a EU passport? but i am starting to become concerned for our british youngsters and i'm american.

kinda off topic but what ever happened to that defender we signed from Sao Paolo when we first struck a partnership deal w/ them? he was supposed to be loaned to Sporting for a year or two and then come over but i dont know if he ever went to Sporting. cant think of his name either

Oh it's a lot more bold than that.

How about, if we converted Fabio Da Silva into a Goalkeeper, he'd be the most talented ball-playing goalkeeper I know of in current world football.

I've seen Fabio twice, just as Dodo. But I'm just as sure of that 'bold' statement.

You're acting as if I said that Dodo, if converted to a CB, will be the best CB in the world.

I cant know that, nobody can. But he wont drop his ability to control and distribute the ball just because he's moved inside from the left.

He went to Inter Milan after we had problems getting a work permit. He's now on loan from them to a Serie B team if I recall correctly.

Yeah well, that's not far off what you did say.

If we convert him to CB he'll be the most naturally gifted ball-playing CB in the world.

He's what? 17 years old? 18?

He might not even make it as a professional footballer at the highest level. Even if you've followed his career closely since he was 15 years old, it's insanely far-fetched to claim he will be" the best ball-playing <insert any position here> in the world". To make this claim after watching two games, on television, with him playing in a different position is just... well... mental...

Whatever, the summary is interesting and it's good to hear from someone who's watched the kid play, even if it was just two games. So thanks for that. I know more about him now than I did before I opened the thread. I just couldn't let that comment slide without pointing out how ludicrous it was.

I guess I can see why you think its far fetched.

I just disagree :p

I'm really not sure on the idea of him playing central defence, but I am sure he's gifted with the ball at his feet in a similar way (but not the same way) as the twins. They are more dribblers, he's more of a passer. And with that I'll let the subject rest.

Yeah, that's the bit I'm pleased to hear. We've got some decent young stoppers at the club (e.g. Cathcart) but it would be great to get another young centre-half in who can use the ball really well.

Which says a lot that we still will have more (or the same amount of, as in the case of Chelsea) British players than Arsenal and Liverpool have in their teams today...

More details of the deal have emerged; Dodo will arrive on Monday and stay for two weeks as well as travelling with the squad to the Champions League final -

Manchester United close to finalising deal for Brazilain star Dodo

By Alan Nixon 14/05/2009

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is flying in Dodo - Brazil's best young defender - to finalise a £6million deal.

The 17-year-old, full name Jose Rodolfo Pires Ribeiro Dodo, who plays for Corinthians, caught United's eye at a recent tournament and talks have moved so fast that the teenager is arriving on Monday in a deal first revealed by Mirror Sport on April 23.

Dodo will spend a fortnight at United on a trip that will also see him go to the Champions League final as a special guest before putting pen to paper.

The youngster, likened to Rio Ferdinand, has yet to make a first-team start for Corinthians and Fergie is ready to let him return to Sao Paulo to play with them for the first half of next season.

But United have an agreement to sign the top prospect in January next year as long as he passes a medical and there are no hitches over personal terms.

United will also sort out the paperwork to go with the transfer, including checks on his Portuguese passport - a key factor that avoids work permit problems in Europe.

sounds like a signed deal, but not delivered. We'll see. No more Obi Mikel eh.

Manchester United are reportedly poised to sign Brazilian youngster Dodo in a move that has stirred up controversy.

The 17-year-old centre-back currently plies his trade with Corinthians and is regarded as an extremely exciting prospect for the future.

Dodo has been quoted as saying that he expects to join the Red Devils over the summer in a transfer that would see him link up with compatriots Rafael and Fabio da Silva and Rodrigo Possebon.

United have yet to indicate whether they will swoop for Dodo but the thought of such a move has angered 1970 World Cup winner Carlos Alberto.

Alberto finds it infuriating that big European clubs are able to sign Brazilian youngsters and has called on Fifa to change its laws.

"It is disgraceful United are allowed to do this to Brazilian football," Alberto said in the Manchester Evening News.

"The big teams have the money and can take our best players. It is a big problem in Brazil.

"The clubs cannot keep good young players because they can make much more money in other countries. They should change the law so, at least until the age of 20 or 21, the best players play in Brazil and get experience before moving to Europe.

"Fifa must do something."

Why not at 33 yrs of age?

Carlos Alberto's statements are just silly. Whats wrong with offering one with talent a chance at a better living?

What next? Brazillian engineers should not be allowed to leave the country until age 35 because the country needs infrastructure?

just silly. people should be allowed to do what they want, even if its only for more money

Aye, he does look a player, but he's got Lescott, Yobo and Jagielka in front of him at centre back and they're all fairly decent.

I think he'd have an easier time displacing Phil Neville.

Short term.

By the time he's in his peak he will most likely be an excellent, established centre back. He'd only ever make a half-decent centre mid.

Oh, and Yobo is average.

Well there's me told.

Fair enough, I'll take your word for it, you know more about it than me.

According to FM Rodwell is half Brazilian*

Cross him off the list

*Apparently he's not at all Brazilian in real life, mind
