Television Doctor Who

Considering how the finale of the last season ended what the feck was Moffat supposed to do? Companions were always off limits for this one and that's basically half of what Doctor Who episodes tend to be about. Its obvious he was always going to run with the lion, the witch and the wardrobe thing, there would have had to be a happy ending (it is a Christmas special after all). He couldn't just use one of the big monsters (i.e Daleks or Cibermen) willy nilly because if he did that it would de-value their worth and impact in the show during an actual season for Doctor Who. I thought on the whole it was quite a nice little story for a one off episode which will be watched by millions of people who normally wouldn't be watching.

I love Doctor Who, I love the Moff, and I don't really mind where this arc is going but:

The problem for me with the last 2 seasons is that, they have explained away massive story arc's with timey wimey stuff if they have explained it at all. This has often been the case with Doctor Who since the 9th, but usually single episodes instead of whole arcs.

As for what he was meant to do, it was an alright episode, but the Doctor brought the peril upon himself. Instead of acting as the saviour of good, the Doctor ends up looking like someone who manipulates events for his own amusement. And as my girlfriend just said when asking for a word to describe that: "All evil villains do that".

In "The Last Voyage", the doctor saves an entire ship of people, and when we see the events without him through "Turn Left" we see he has actually saved the entire human race and destiny as we know it. In this one however he puts a family in danger, saves a bunch of tree-souls from... humans. And then as a prize for succeeding he gives the family back their father.

Like I said, I don't mind seeing the Doctor as a manipulator, and as less "good", but I think it should be slightly better, with more attention paid to it being done at all.

It wasn't a captivating episode and certainly wasn't as good as previous christmas specials but I still really enjoyed it. I think during the Smith era overall they've done well to keep the series fresh.

Eh? Everything that happened in this episode was a complete accident. He was trying to take them to the christmasy planet, he never came across the evil humans in this one and the husband was saved by the spirit trees/the wife. If anything, the Doctor had quite a passive role in this episode and everything was actually instigated by the human family. The Doctor didn't manipulate anything.

Just caught this on iplayer. Shaky start with the attempted slapstick but gradually got a lot better and turned out to be good honest Christmas fayre.
My only gripe is with the caption that informed us that three years had passed before they cut to the father figure as a war pilot!...The kids hadn't aged, looked exactly the same!...why not just say three months??
Ruined my bloody Christmas that!
;)

I like the way they've taken it off Earth a lot more recently. When they brought it back every episode was basically an alien invasion on Earth, whereas now they've started to become more true to the old series. Am I right in thinking they showed the Daleks' home planet at the start tonight?

Very good first episode.

They're only showing 5 episodes before a mid-season break, personally think cutting the season into 2 parts is a shit idea.

really liked this episode i am only now getting to like matt smith but then tennant was a hard act to follow

Matt Smith is miles better at being the doctor than Tennant! Tennant is a fantastic actor, better than Matt Smith in fact but Matt Smith just screams "I'm a thousand year old alien who travels in space in a blue box." Tennant was far too dramatic and took things too seriously for my liking. This is Doctor Who not some sort of ground breaking drama after all.

I agree with this.

I think it depends on who your companion is as to how the Doctor should be. The reason Tennant was like that was because of the whole Rose thing.

I think there was far too many side characters in Tennant's era.

Doctor Who works best with the Doctor plus 1 or 2 companions... no more.

So after that first episode in the series, does that basically mean the Daleks will no longer be the Doctor's enemy? I say that considering they have no information/data on him anymore, meaning they have no idea that he was their enemy.

I'm sitting on the fence at the moment - since I'm sure there would be more drama if one of the Doctor's most fiereced enemies cease to being hostile towards him.

I also believe the Doctor giving away his wrist-thingy to Amy to protect him from the nanocloud will come back to haunt him later in the series. Maybe not of course because after all, "he's a timelord" - but I still have a funny feeling....

Finally - I really do love the script of it all. The way the Doctor asked where the Souffle-girl got the eggs/milk from at the start of the show, and how it ended up being a cruicial question at the end of it all. I bet many of us just assumed his "Where did you get the eggs from?" question was just the Doctor being the Doctor.

I think that the wrist thing will have something to do with it and potentially put things back to normal with the Daleks and the Doctor.

What we do know though is there is a massive Dalek empire knocking about so I am sure they will be upto something rather soon....

Twas okay, although was a little confused why walder frey was in space, must have missed that in the books.

Decent episode, some good humour.

They're obviously going with the 'unknown doctor' theme for this season, although I think someone will ID him in episode 5, setting up the mid-season break.

Shit episode this week.

Didn't think it added anything to the overall story. Would've been better if they had the Doctor not change his mind on Jex and he then had to live with the consequences of Isaac's death.

Next week's doesn't look any better, this season has been poor so far.

Enjoyed the last few weeks but that was as bad a Doctor Who episode as I've seen. Nothing really happened until halfway through then they rushed through some story about some aliens I've heard nothing about before. The whole one of the Doctor's heart stopping bit has been done before and the real life vs time travel life thing is very boring. Also why was Amy narrating at the start and end of the episode? No good reason I imagine.

I thought it started off as the best episode of the series. Back to good old save the world Doctor Who. Previous episodes I didn't really care if they saved some dinosaurs or about the people of Mercy. It was intriguing, I genuinely wanted to know what was going on, and it felt like it would all be part of some greater story.

However the ending of this episode was rushed and shit. No real explanation of who the aliens were. The explanation for the cubes was stupid as well. What brilliant research they achieved! I thought it was going to be the first of a two parter, as given another 45 minutes it could have been built on and turned into an excellent episode I thought. But no. The Doctor points his sonic screwdriver at stuff and it all ends happily ever after.

They really are dragging out the Amy and Rory leaving stuff. It could all be done in one episode. It wouldn't be so boring and it'd have an actual impact if it was quick.

Overall, this is the worst series of Doctor Who I can remember.

Really poor episode. It took too long to set-up what the cubes were and then they rushed the ending.

Agree with Rowem on them dragging out Amy & Rory's departure. I don't see the point of them giving them a 5 episode swansong when almost all his other companions were kicked off in 1/2 episodes. If they were going to do this (get rid of them after 5 episodes) they should not have announced it beforehand or at least made it interesting. At the moment I'm just waiting for them to go and the new companion to arrive, so the actual 'new season' can start.

I don't really see how the 5 episodes are linked together. In the first 2 episodes I thought they were going with the 'doctor who?' story carried on from last season, where no-one knows him but since episode 3 it's been more about him needing a full-time companion. Also, if UNIT are meant to know things about the universe, should they not have thought the Doctor is dead, instead of almost anticipating his arrival?

4 episodes in and the best part has been the new companion's performance in episode 1.

I maybe the only one but I liked the EP.
I have to agree that this season has been weak so far and Amy and Roy's departure is a bit long winded.

The weeping Angels next week, always been a good EP with them in.

Enjoyed it, probably my favourite of the series. Thought it would have worked better as a two-parter however - the ending was very rushed for me.

Thread derailment: Is it just me that gets amused by Guy Incognito in the Dr Who thread?

Carry on!

Felt like a RTD episode, what with the newsreaders and earth invasion. Wouldn't the millions who were brought back from the dead have serious brain damage?
