Still can't get used to this doctor. Just lacks gravitas for me.
Considering how the finale of the last season ended what the feck was Moffat supposed to do? Companions were always off limits for this one and that's basically half of what Doctor Who episodes tend to be about. Its obvious he was always going to run with the lion, the witch and the wardrobe thing, there would have had to be a happy ending (it is a Christmas special after all). He couldn't just use one of the big monsters (i.e Daleks or Cibermen) willy nilly because if he did that it would de-value their worth and impact in the show during an actual season for Doctor Who. I thought on the whole it was quite a nice little story for a one off episode which will be watched by millions of people who normally wouldn't be watching.

Eh? Everything that happened in this episode was a complete accident. He was trying to take them to the christmasy planet, he never came across the evil humans in this one and the husband was saved by the spirit trees/the wife. If anything, the Doctor had quite a passive role in this episode and everything was actually instigated by the human family. The Doctor didn't manipulate anything.I love Doctor Who, I love the Moff, and I don't really mind where this arc is going but:
The problem for me with the last 2 seasons is that, they have explained away massive story arc's with timey wimey stuff if they have explained it at all. This has often been the case with Doctor Who since the 9th, but usually single episodes instead of whole arcs.
As for what he was meant to do, it was an alright episode, but the Doctor brought the peril upon himself. Instead of acting as the saviour of good, the Doctor ends up looking like someone who manipulates events for his own amusement. And as my girlfriend just said when asking for a word to describe that: "All evil villains do that".
In "The Last Voyage", the doctor saves an entire ship of people, and when we see the events without him through "Turn Left" we see he has actually saved the entire human race and destiny as we know it. In this one however he puts a family in danger, saves a bunch of tree-souls from... humans. And then as a prize for succeeding he gives the family back their father.
Like I said, I don't mind seeing the Doctor as a manipulator, and as less "good", but I think it should be slightly better, with more attention paid to it being done at all.
Matt Smith is miles better at being the doctor than Tennant! Tennant is a fantastic actor, better than Matt Smith in fact but Matt Smith just screams "I'm a thousand year old alien who travels in space in a blue box." Tennant was far too dramatic and took things too seriously for my liking. This is Doctor Who not some sort of ground breaking drama after all.
Enjoyed it, probably my favourite of the series. Thought it would have worked better as a two-parter however - the ending was very rushed for me.I maybe the only one but I liked the EP.
I have to agree that this season has been weak so far and Amy and Roy's departure is a bit long winded.
The weeping Angels next week, always been a good EP with them in.
