He looked like a player who was playing their first game in a long time. Good to see him get a run out as he's a decent option

Everyone's crossing looks bad because we have no CF to attack the ball in the area. Someone to stick their head and body into the cross.

I thought Dalot was just fine last night, no complaints.

First game back in ages, in the first half his attacking looked good, their LB struggled with him. He also made that crucial headed clearance in the second half. I was happy with him - I'd give him 15mins on the weekend on the RW and then start him against Rochdale.

People go on about how shit all of our player’s crossing is. Maybe it’s crap movement, or the fact that the opposition usually have 4x more defenders than we have attackers, therefore the cross has to be 100% accurate. If there were more players in the middle, it’d be easier to put one “in the mixer”.

Surely so many professional footballers can’t be THAT bad at crossing a ball?

Just a thought.

Of course, they can. How many players do you think we should have in the box? 6, 7, more? Maybe throw in the CBs too? It's not like it was under LvG when the players looked absolutely lost on the pitch, or Jose when we were looking to attack with three or four players. We have players in the box on many occasions. The problem with relying on crosses to create chances is that for them to become threatening, they must be whipped in the box first time. You take an unnecessary touch either because you can't bring the ball under control or because you need to raise your head and see all the movement and that's two precious seconds lost. Seconds which give the opposition time to organize themselves (most times the cross is the result of a switch of play and therefore the defence is moving/adjusting).

Rojo created two good chances because he hit the ball first time. Dalot always needed one more touch. He kept the width, he made himself available but he was very frustrating when it was time to release the ball.

He's young, he just came back from injury but yesterday he had plenty of space to exploit and oh-so-much time to check the movement in the box in order to hit the cross first time. He didn't. And let's not talk about his positioning on the other side of the pitch where he had to defend crosses and he looked beyond clueless. But maybe he's not a FB, as some suggest. I don't know what he is. Yesterday he earned the sympathy and the pat on the back that usually people give to young lads who are terrible at something but always strive to give their best. That's about it.

Time to get this guy on our right wing. Yes, people will say we shouldn't be putting square pegs in round holes and that we need a specialist right winger. Whilst I agree, this guy is probably our best natural right sided player. Nothing extravagant but likes to get at his opponent and whip crosses in.

Think I rate him higher than most seem to. I'd either be playing him LB or RW right now. Think he has a lot of good attributes as he's pretty quick, tall, strong, good in the air, really nice touch and passing. Just seems to be positioning that lets him down. Maybe a victim of his own versatility.

I think the same as you. I don't watch as many games as I used to so go by the player performance threads most of the time and there seems to be a lot of criticism. However when I have seen him he looks a player with real potential so I can't totally understand all the negativity. Also Mourinho rated him really highly and called him the best player in his position in his age group in Europe when we signed him.

Generally speaking, crossing is a low percentage act. Even the very best crossers are only successful at a low percentage.

Such is the mismanagement of our squad that this applies no matter who we put there.

Dalot is probably the best option tbh. I remember he had a decent game on the right wing vs Barcelona. Put him on the right, move Andreas into the middle and get wheelchair Mata out of the side I reckon.

Also changed the game for us when he came on vs PSG. He was phenomenal!

Regards getting Mata out, I agree. Pereira isnt great by any means, but he'll give a bit of bite. Ideally, I'd prefer us to play with a midfield three now, because we dont have any top class 10's.

What’s the consensus on this fella?
I can’t remember him doing particularly well in defense, he had a decent run on the wing during that post-Jose run but
really nothing to build on.
On top of that he is injury prone, what should we be doing with this lad when he have some pretty exciting young full backs coming through?

Dalot needs game time. People forget he only played not more than 10 professional games at Porto before we got him.

He needs to get sharper and fitter to handle the PL, then he would be a great squad asset as he can play anywhere on the right side of the team, plus being a good cover for LB. The injuries have been setting him back every time so let's hope Dalot won't become another one of our perpetual injury prone players.

For me he would be in ahead of Perreira and Lingard. Give him a run in the team. He can't do any worse than the donkeys in there now

He's the best RW out of these, for sure, and that's not even his position. For me he should be just behind Greenwood and James there until we finally sign one.

He's awful at defending and his delivery and final ball isn't great. He's decent at beating players but doesn't know what to do when he does that. Would fit in at right wing.

But he hasn't got the delivery to play on the wing though?

We should just play him out wide when Wan gets back. Its not like we currently have someone who would be better than him there.

Pereira is a better crosser than him. I don't even rate the guy but he's a miles better option.

Can we put the Dalot to RW debate to bed already. It's disgusting to think about.

He is good enough for back up for Bisaka and maybe good enough to play rw instead of Pereira, Mata, Lingard...

He was okay. Had no support from whoever was playing in front of him. Huge potential and in the long run he will be a better signing than AWB

I like him, think he's going to be a very useful option for us going forward, one of our better players today.

Same problem with him as with Shaw. Doesn't close down his opponent and almost always allows crosses in. Good attacking play though.

Our best player yesterday which of course does not mean too much.

I am not a fan of generally lining up players out of their natural position but I agree that he could be turned into a pretty decent RW.
As I cannot see a top class talent like Sancho joining us anytime soon I would give this a try.

He was poor defending and was beaten easily but his crossing was very good. With the problems we have in the attack, it's better to play him as RW. He can at least dribble past players and cross the ball.

We need to play him on the RW or fit him in somewhere on that side as he showed last night that he is the only player that seems to be able to get crosses in of a decent standard - he can’t play RB as defensively he is not good enough and with AWB that is a spot not up for grabs - however he can actually take someone on/knock it past and then get a decent cross in - the fact we don’t seem to have anyone there to put it in is another issue but at least we got some crosses in last night - if he didn’t have all the defensive responsibilities of playing RB then he could turn out to be a good offensive player until the RW is addressed properly in a transfer window.

What will Ole do?????

Unless our strikers and attacking midfielders start making those runs infront of the goal mouth, all the good crosses will go nowhere. James has put in some wonderful passes in that zone between the keeper and the defence begging to be turned in by someone only to go to waste. Everyone wants to check their run and bang one in the top corner, no one goes for the easy tap in.

I'm really disappointed that Ole's best skills as a player are not translating to the young forwards.

I like Dalot. He has his flaws, but he puts in 100% every time I see him and I like his attacking prowess and attitude. He was one of only 2-3 players that were reasonably good last night.
