Didier Drogba - Signed for Chelsea on a one-year contract

True, but this time there seems to be something in it.

Apparently their fans were chanting his name at Mandzukic's unveiling so they obviously really want him back and their owner/director has come out and said they'd gladly welcome him back. I could see it happening. Maybe even a loan.
I think he'll end up going on loan with an option to buy, with Chelsea paying a fair chunk of his wages. Supposedly, he's on the market for £20m but no club is going to bid that much money for him - except maybe Monaco. For Torres, though, he'll have one eye on Euro 2016 so he won't go to the Middle East, which makes Chelsea's bargaining position even worse. I think this could rule out Monaco as well - he doesn't need a new adventure - he needs familiarity.

Ivanovic has played the last 20 minutes upfront in our last 2 pre season games. I'd much rather have Drog as the target than him!

As for his wages, I hope he's on an absolute shitload. He deserves it.

Get Huth back. Perfect for Mourinho's goal chasing tactics.

Feels a bit bizarre of a transfer. Not too worried about Drogba, he's past it but still a dream news for Chelsea fans I reckon.

Now what shirt number will Drogba get? 25?

Well, that's the end of Costa's career then. Drogba's amazing for Chelsea but no other striker has ever prospered there in his shadow.

Not even Monaco would, surely. What a ridiculous price - 10m absolute tops...

It's a bit of a random one, but I guess it's a decent move. Can't see him starting, maybe besides against Arsenal, and would probably still be a decent choice off the bench. Plus it gives the fans a lift. Surely one of Torres or Lukaku will be leaving now. You'd think Torres with how useless he has been, but if I were lukaku I would be looking at this situation as the last straw really. They just brought back a 36 year old as competition for his place in the squad.

His legs are completely gone, he is a shadow of the player he was even 2 seasons ago.

There must be better options out there even given his hero status.

22 goals last season says they havent gone yet.
better options to do 20 mins or so and teach the other strikers?

Where do you get 22 goals from?

His official website claims 9 league goals for last season (only one of which was against a top 8 side).

All other sources claim a season total of 14 in all competitions.

The first question that came to my mind hearing about that was: Where does that leave Lukaku?. Loaned out again? Kinda staggering that Mourinho would bring back Drogba instead of putting more faith in the Belgian talent.

my bad..was going from Jan 2013.
But there is no evidence his legs are totally gone as you put it.....because he was a late starter to the game as a professional his body and fitness are meant to be at quite a high level. Obviously not as quick as when he was under 30..but just as powerful

Might damage his reputation if he has a few shocking games that frustrate the fans.

Powerful forward with a great scoring record in cup finals, bar that he never really had more than 2 good goal scoring seasons, just saying.

Wow that's surprising.

It's funny to have these emotional goodbyes with the crowd, leaving on a high after a CL win just to come back on the bench. It's a bit of a joke really

We all remember that 09/10 season where he was a monster. But the season he was basically half in a sulk half out of favour was more of a mad waste. That must have been 07/08 looking at the stats above.

Does seem mad to bother coming back in a playing capacity after having the perfect exit, last touch for Chelsea winning them the euro cup!
Should have just come back on the staff.

It's interesting that people still don't realise that Lukaku isn't currently suited to Chelsea at all. The world cup showed just how much he lacks when he is spearheading a possession based team.

exactly why having DD back to show him the ropes

Nah, I don't think Lukaku will work out at Chelsea. He's a supremely talented player just with the wrong attributes for Chelsea. For all the talk of Drogba being a powerhouse, he backs it up with incredible technique. He can't teach Lukaku that. He can help Romelu improve in some aspects of his game, but I doubt he will improve his technical ability.

Well against about 70% of teams we are. Struggled to break down a lot of teams last season when they put every man behind the ball, embarrassing tactics from the opposition really.

Ironic

I agree with your point about Lukaku though.

No sure if you're being serious or trolling me.

oh well...sell the fecker for 30m then. Bamford will have to do ;-)

Mourinho: Drogba dives
Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has labelled the London club's Ivorian striker Didier Drogba "a diver."

Mourinho, now in charge of Italian giants Inter Milan, left the English Premier League side just over a year ago having repeatedly defended Drogba against charges of diving.

But the Portuguese, who also criticised Cristiano Ronaldo, Fernando Torres and Robin van Persie, said: "I am no longer Chelsea coach, and I do not have to defend them any more, but I think it is correct if I say Drogba is a diver.

"Drogba, Ronaldo, Torres and van Persie are the divers. Who dives more? Who has won more penalties in recent years? But English football is the one that criticises the divers the most."

Mourinho added diving was different to players who were fouled going to ground in the box.

"I hate diving, but I'm not happy if a player is kicked by somebody in the box and he tries to remain standing," he explained. "It's very, very rare a referee gives a decision if the player doesn't go down so I tell players not to be naive, but to be fair."
Nice little piece from '08.

Can't let go of the past lol, just the same as us with Scholes though.

Sentiment ruling logic.

This was my initial reaction yesterday and was happy seeing him return, aging past it etc.

Today though, its agood move for them, simply if its just setting the bar for the incoming strikers.
Costa, can have the pressure taken off him if he doesn't hit the ground running and Drogba coming on for the last 15 -20 mins is hardly a bad option.
And Lukaku, well he's young, and if Chelsea get rid of him they are mental.I don't think they will though, and Drogba wil act and was brought in ,in a big part of joses thinking,to be/ a mentor to hone his game.

Its a good move even if he isn't the beast he once was,he will stiill have his moments.

Interesting. Considering he was the main man up front for the most part, that record is poor for who many considered a world class player.
