Di Marzio: Mata has been offered to Inter Milan

Mata was a record signing for United who has largely underperformed for Us only reason he has been able to survive so long for us is precisely because we have been mostly poor during this period its quite telling that such immensely talented player accepted squad role in his prime with us its not because of goodness of his heart but he could not do any better we don't owe him nothing he has been hugely disappointing for us whether he stays or leave won't have much of an impact on United fortunes.

That’s rubbish.

He played a big role in our FA cup run under LVG and has scored important goals consistently throughout his time here. He’s been a highly technically gifted player in squads seriously lacking in that department. Hell, the game away at Liverpool is enough to endear him to most. He’s our best current option at RW during a window where our inactivity has dismayed almost everyone - and you want to sell him??

This is pretty good news if true. I love Juan Mata but I just can't see how he fits into our best 11. Very good player to have on the books but if it means bringing someone in the next few days Im all for it. I wouldn't mind keeping him and adding another RW as there are other players currently who should see the door before him.

It also begs the question why is he just being offered now? Poor business once again from the club if the news is even true at all. Also the amount of wages this should free up should be excellent for whoever we do decide to bring in just 2 days.

You may think he is our best option for the RW,but he is awful as a "winger", he gets sucked into midfield and even deeper, leaving gaping holes down that side of the pitch, has no pace to press(luckily for him Mourinho doesn't fancy that style of play),can't beat his man for pace and doesn't protect his full-back.If we're not buying anyone then the manager has to play one of our pacey forwards on the right and persevere with them.Mata is the wrong option.

Mata has been a good, consistent player for us but the reality is his pace is far too slow for the Premier League. He can't play on the break quick enough. If he goes, it wouldn't be the end of the world and would probable allow Lingard/Martial more play time, and they have the pace to play on the break.

Mata is a technical wizard, but the truth is that he never suited us, and starting him has massively contributed to us having in effect zero threat from the right for years.

A great guy, and has scored a decent amount of goals, but when you think back to the Chelsea days, where he even outperformed Hazard, he's been a mighty step down.

Having said that, there's no way he's going anywhere. We "Might" have thrown his name out in Europe at some point in this window, but we probably talk about 100s of players both our own, and potential signings.

I think the truth is in between your views.
He's been a decent signing, but nowhere near what we needed.

It was a Moyesy panic buy one January, and we've never really got the best out of him, and shoehorning him on the right, has meant a very low threat from the right, relying on an aging Valencia.

He certainly didn’t seem to be what Moyes needed, with his style of play. He was what LVG needed, and played his best football for us under him. Instrumental in retaining possession, and one of the few (with Martial) who could turn possesion into danger in that style of play. Unfortunately LVg wasn’t what United needed.

Under Mourinho, we should remember he was first almost discarded, then earned his place and Mourinho’s praise, despite not at all being a Mourinho type player.

Juan Mata is that important tad slower now, and should maybe head for a place where his technique and quick brain will make players around him better still. But to me, he has been one of the lights in a dark era.

A player who has given his all ever since he came, been here during the most turbulent period in our recent history and never complained or kicked up a fuss, and has done everything each manager (4 in 5 seasons!) have asked of him. And thats the response to the first transfer rumours in 5 seasons you give him. Feck me. He might not be at his best any more, but United have always treated their longer serving players with a bit of respect. He's earned that more than most in our squad.

Last season was the first blip in his time with us. I wouldn't put it past him to have a career renaissance given his natural game and skills. Probably won't come on the RW, but given we have no-one else to play there, I'd have thought you lot might see some worth in him sticking around.

I said it at the time. Mata was not the type of player we needed when we bought him. Chelsea must have been pissing themselves at the time as he wasn't even in their 1st team. Massive panic buy by the idiot that is Moyes. I'm not knocking him as a person, he's a lovely guy but just not a good enough footballer anymore. Sorry, just my opinion.

If we've got sufficient cover probably wouldn't be opposed to selling him at this point. Been an occasionally frustrating but overall decent player for us who's been productive and made some valuable contributions, but he's 30 now and showed some signs of decline to an extent last year. Might be for the best.

I dunno, Mata's signing probably didn't address some of our main issues as a team at the time, but it should be remembered that even though he wasn't in favour with Mourinho he was widely considered as one of the best players in the league during the 2012-13 season - to the point where comparing him with players like Rooney or Silva at their best was fairly normal. Even if he wasn't exactly what we needed I can see why we signed him when he was available. And in the latter half of Moyes' disastrous year he was actually one of our better players. Albeit that wasn't exactly something to shout home about.

He has been decent for us, technically gifted as few, but doesn’t add to the current united set up. He still has a role to play as a squad player, but unless we change our style to be more technical than physical, I see him leaving on next summer window.

I’m hoping that the introduction of Fred on the right of midfield will help our attacking play down that side of the pitch, hopefully our forwards won’t have to keep dropping as deep, this should particularly help Mata who is useless outside the final third.
