Di Marzio: Mata has been offered to Inter Milan

I do not understand why the likes of Lingard is seen as a better option as an out and out number 10, surely Mata's strengths lie there and nowhere else if that makes sense.

a move for Golovin or Fekhir would make a lot of sense if Mata is leaving us. Top guy, just not right for us at this moment in time

Id be really surprised if Mata went anywhere this season.

I actually don't find the report very convincing. I mean he was part of jersey reveals, played a huge part in pre season (Played among the most number of minutes), was part of every off field promo activity and Jose named him as among the candidates for captaincy when Valencia isn't on field. Add to that he seemed to have developed a great chemistry with Sanchez. Would absolutely zero sense to offer him to clubs (had it said that Inter had contacted us for him- might have believed it tbh)

Would make sense to sell him as we can't offer him a central role and he isn't good enough to play on the wing.

I miss the days when teams genuinely feared playing Man Utd. We need players that brings that back.

Not just players. We need to approach games in the appropriate way for that to happen.

Its very simple. I do think Lingard is probably the most overrated player we have. A good squad player, but nothing more so far. He disappeared for the semi & quarter finals at the world cup. He disappeared quite a lot in the second half of last season, but because he had a good first half of the season, there is a belief that he has made significant progress. I still think he needs to show more consistency. Having said all of that though, there is indeed room for improvement. He is still at an age where he can make those improvements too. Mata on the other hand, whilst a class act, has regressed, and we've never used him in the correct position. He doesn't have time on his side anymore so it makes more sense, with a heavy heart, to move Mata moreso than Lingard.

Fergie wouldn't have signed Mata - and if United want to win the league and Europe again they can't buy players of Mata's level and expect to compete at the highest level.

Nice guy and a decent player - but not a Manchester United player.

True. Love Mata though. Just a real shame he keeps getting pragmatic managers.

I think Mata would excel in Italy, or in any team that played the majority of the game camped in the opponents half really. He's wasted at United.

The clog Lingard gets is ridiculous. He was comfortably one of our better players. Sanchez was woeful, Pogba too, Martial and Rashford weren't pulling up trees either. Even when it's not happening for him, Lingard is constantly moving, making runs and working hard for the team. The same cannot be said of the aforementioned, Alexis notwithstanding.

You seem to be under the impression that if someone, like me, criticizes Lingard, it means you can also infer the opinion they have of other players. This is strange, because in this particular case, I've not even mentioned any other players except Mata in that paragraph.

Not aimed at you per se, more at the general over criticism of one player, and the over protection of others on this forum. Apologies for not making that clear.

Seria A maybe slower paced, but very few play expansive and prioritize possession. Even Napoli under Sarri has to play at quick tempo which requires pacy players since they can't just use aerial cross most of the time against organized defense.

The fact that defences are often deep, tight and organised, would make Mata much more useful in Italy, than in the back and forth transitional, counter attacking style of the premier league. He'd probably work well in a two man attack, slightly deeper of the two. I'm hoping that this will be an option the Jose utilises this season, he dovetailed with Alexis nicely.

The problem is Inter specifically not committing many men forward even if the opposition doesn't either. So the attackers need to work well independent with less support which require great stamina and pace to make it happen

I am a big fan of Mata. When he plays in the no10 role, he is one of the best players we have at playing ingenuous little passes to split open defences. He is also an incredibly likeable, cultured, character who would be a good club ambassador if we kept him.

I do, however, think he would be another player like Blind who deserves to be playing every week, so I would not hold a grudge if he wanted to leave.

Why are we getting rid of our best player at modelling the new kits (and general United swag) every year? I thought we were the World Champions of Marketing? If we want to retain that title, it's a poor move.

World class contribution there.

Andreas Pereira is a good choice to take over ther merchandise role for me.

It would make sense. As much as I like Mata, he's really not suited for a Jose Mourinho team. His legs are gone and his starting position needs to be much further forward for him to have any real impact.

I think it will be a good move for Mata. I like him, but he hasn't got the physicality any more to make a real impact in the Premier League like he did at Chelsea.

A move to the Italian league where they all play to 40 yrs old is a smart move.

If we can also engineer a swap for straight swap for Perisic with little extra money involved, it will be a stroke of genius. I assume of course that Perisic can play on the right, cause we sure as hell do not need ANOTHER left winger.

He's been a pretty terrible signing. Complete panic buy from Moyes

Don't understand why JMo has kept him this long

I'm not sure why he never trims his neck beard tbh

if Mata has value then it's time to move him on....

as likeable as he is it's been a fairly underwhelming year or two, particularly since Jose came in

This might be controversial but I don't know what Mata has done for the last two and a half seasons.

Would not bother me at all if Mata left. Does not have the pace needed in the PL to hurt defences.

A player who has given his all ever since he came, been here during the most turbulent period in our recent history and never complained or kicked up a fuss, and has done everything each manager (4 in 5 seasons!) have asked of him. And thats the response to the first transfer rumours in 5 seasons you give him. Feck me. He might not be at his best any more, but United have always treated their longer serving players with a bit of respect. He's earned that more than most in our squad.

Last season was the first blip in his time with us. I wouldn't put it past him to have a career renaissance given his natural game and skills. Probably won't come on the RW, but given we have no-one else to play there, I'd have thought you lot might see some worth in him sticking around.

He'll probably do fine in Italy, his technical ability will be utilised more there with less focus on his physical attributes.

Mata was a record signing for United who has largely underperformed for Us only reason he has been able to survive so long for us is precisely because we have been mostly poor during this period its quite telling that such immensely talented player accepted squad role in his prime with us its not because of goodness of his heart but he could not do any better we don't owe him nothing he has been hugely disappointing for us whether he stays or leave won't have much of an impact on United fortunes.

You'd be hopeful that this means someone is coming in to replace him.

Really like Mata as a player, but he is very difficult to fit into our eleven really.

Unsurprising if true. No matter how lovely he is or how good of a first touch he has, he's been largely innefective for years now.

A "terrible" signing? That's absolute bollocks tbf.
