Di Marzio: Mata has been offered to Inter Milan

Some of you lot wouldn't be happy until we had about ten players left.

Whether we buy a right winger or not, I'd keep Mata. He's a good player, a great option to come in for rotation, rarely injured, always good for 5-10 goals a season and something a little different to what we already have. As long as he's happy here (in that capacity) then you keep him. We're one short in attack as it is, never mind getting rid of more.

Does seem strange that Mata of all people would be getting shifted unless there is a replacement coming in. Just please don’t be Peresic or Willian.

He could be a good option in a possession based team, where players see plenty of the ball, but the way we play is not suited to him. Still, this only makes sense if we have a player lined up to replace him. He could be a good squad player, at least he has a good fitness record. Always available when needed.

Yeah, we're not suited for him. He's one of the few in the squad who is comfortable in possession under a press, and always looks to play triangles. Jose's way of dealing with the press is to bypass it with speedy players.

I'd be okay if we sold him and got Willian.

Need a replacement in first. I like Mata, but he just isnt a true right sided player - the only position he would get a run in here.

Would have loved to see him underneath Sanchez and Lukaku with either a three man midfield in a 4-3-3 or him underneath those two in a 3-5-2

If we play 3-5-2 he becomes lost in our midfield pack.
I'd sell him if he isn't going to get game time.

Are people happy with Mata going with no replacement coming in? He isn’t a top player anymore and we’ve never really seen the best of him at United but we only have Lingard for RW.

If we can get a decent fee, why not? Worst case we have Rashford, Lingard, Sanchez and Pereira who can play there. And Chong in theory, but that'll take couple of years (if he ever reaches the level expected)

One of the first of many players we have signed without any clue how to actually fit them into the team. 5 years later, he still doesn’t have a position.

Even that's not guaranteed - he only scored 3 goals last season.

Just because he was offered doesnt mean its happening. If it does I hope its related to Perisic moving the other way.
No, that's true, but if you offer someone out of the club - there is a solid chance he's outta here. I'd take anyone with a bit of pace on the wing, in return.

I love Mata but even I will admit he isn't a top top player anymore. He'll come on, do fine and maybe score a brace in one or two games. However, we should not be selling anybody right now unless we're 100% sure we can get a top draw replacement. Maybe it was a swap for Perisic?
I miss the days when teams genuinely feared playing Man Utd. We need players that brings that back.

I would go for someone better and/or younger than the likes of Willian or Perisic here. If this all goes tits up, there should be some continuity for whoever comes next to manage us. We can go for Zaha, or Fekir who is just a better Mata.

When di Marzio says Barca have bid for Pogba people here laugh it off. When he says Mata has been offered to Inter people here believe it.

Am I right?
No one laughed it off. We all know it was true, we were laughing at the offer.

Even that's not guaranteed - he only scored 3 goals last season.

The only season in his senior career in which he didn't score 5-10 goals, in fairness. I'd bank on him to improve that number this season. I'd expect him to, really.

Even if a replacement like Willian comes in, I'd only be happy letting him go at the end of the window
We need bodies at the minute until our world cup contingent are match fit

Personally I don't see the need to get rid unless we've got a right-sided player coming in, but if those with eyes on the books reckon selling now will make sense monetarily I suppose that's fine.

Fellaini. Flogged everywhere and flirted with Turkish clubs but still ended up signing a new contract with United. smh.
I thought we offered him a deal prior to touting himself around? Anyway, let's leave it there before we depress people further and I derail the thread anymore!

I am fine with Perisic, he has decent stats in the league and performed well in the WC. Not Willian though.
Unless he is coming in to be a WB I wouldn’t want him here, again best stuff is on the left and we have Rashford, Sanchez, Martial all competing for that position.

No one is giving credit to this rumour, Keita seems favourite to come to Inter.

Replacing him I get. Selling him right now I don't.

As with Mkhitaryan (who was also supposed to replace Mata) you never know how new signings will actually pan out.

Much though I love the little guy, I'd be fine with us selling him once an upgrade has been signed and bedded in. Until he is actually proven surplus to requirements though it would be strange to sell him.

Exactly. Sign a player, if that player succeeds then he gets more game time and selling Mata becomes the obvious move, else Mata continues there for this season at RW again. If we sell him and the replecement struggles to adapt, then we end up with RW weakened from what it is right now

I reckon Mata out is to allow Peirrera ( or however his name is spelled ) space in.

The only reason he'd be sold is if Willian is definitely coming in, IMO. However, with the Italian window closing a week or so later, there's no real rush until we've brought in who we want by Thursday. If we ever play with a no.10 in a 4231 then it'll be Lingard/Pereira who get in the side. I think we're more likely to play 433 this season though.

Mata is one of the only footballers we have. I can't believe people are happy to move him on.

His ball retention is very good, can pick a pass and score a goal. If we gave him an extended run in the team in a midfield three or off the right or behind the striker he will get double figures for goals and assists easy.

Plus he's a top professional. I'd rather get rid of Jesse bloody lingard who just fecks around on Instagram all the time

Looking at our preseason, we might be playing a 352, in which case Mata is a useful player to have. Against weaker teams we can play two of Pogba/Matic/Fred and play Mata in the #10 position behind Rom and Sanchez.
There's probably some movement for Perisic or another attacking player if we're looking to offload Mata.

Wait theres people on here who still dont rate Perisic?

I imagine everyone rates him, but I suspect there's also some frustration at another 29 year old being seen as the "missing piece" (after Sanchez).

Personally, as Mata is 30 himself, I'm not too fussed on this one - I'm a lot more against the idea of swapping Martial for Willian

Whats wrong with 29 year olds? Who said we are swapping Martial for anyone?

 I’m not sold on Perisic being a savior like many others would have had you believe last season, but it’s not a stretch to imagine Perisic being a better option than mata on the right for me.

Even though he plays on the left at inter, he is right footed and a big part of his game is based around crossing, so he should in theory be a decent option there.

At this stage it's not a stretch to imagine Chris Smalling being a better option than Mata on the right wing.

He never really hit the heights we had hoped did he?

He didn't but then i don't think there was ever any real plan for him when we brought him in. 3 managers in a row have shunted him out onto the right wing. Which is a position that doesn't suit his strengths in my opinion. Would have liked to have seen him get a proper run in the centre for 15-20 games in a row, to see what he could have done in there.

I'd sell him if he isn't going to get game time.

Could be interesting, especially if we're trying to sign Perisic as part of the deal.

-----------De Gea
----Bailey-Smalling-Toby
RW--Fred-Matic-Pogba--Perisic
------Sanchez-Lukaku

Don't think Martial has the work rate to make either wide slot his own.

They will get back to United on deadline day and tell Woodward we will take him but only on loan and if you pay half his wages.

I am a big Mata fan but frankly, he is just occupying space at the moment in our midfield/ frontline. If we can trade or replace him with a more potent midfielder / attacker, the team would be massively improved.

The only way I can see us fitting him in is bringing him back closer to CM like city did with silva/de bruyne.
