Di Marzio: Barca make bid for Pogba

Nobody is quite indispensable. A few poor performances from him and you will see a lot of people wanting the club to move him on.

The fans may go against him but he's figuratively the face of United. He won the World Cup and he came through the ranks of the United Academy. Although he left earlier, his return was like the prodigal son returns. Football aside, Manchester United are a brand... from a business point of view, selling him for even 200m makes no sense because he's the identity of United at the moment. It was the same with Rooney.

I agree that Pogba hasn't proven himself at the top level at a consistent enough basis yet. But, equally very few of our player's have. de Gea aside I can't genuinely think of another that has been consistently class for us. Mourinho's tactics and systems hasn't suited him. Deschamps missed a trick at Euros 2016 with regards to Pogba and he amended that during this world cup and we all saw what happened. I'm confident, if he stays injury free, Pogba will be top class this season.

It’s not appropriate comparing to our other players. DDG, Lukaku and Sanchez aside, none of our other players are of Pogbas quality so cannot be expected to perform at the level we know Pogba can. He was bought to make a difference and as yet he hasn’t.

That is what annoys me a little about Ppgba, we all saw at the World Cup that when he wants to be he can be a brilliant player but at times last season he didn’t seem like he wanted to.

Fully agree with that second point there. If (and it unfortunately a big if), turns it on this season and shows us the player he truly can be then he can really help propel us close to the title. If he gets that midfield running and manages to chip in with his fair share of goals it will make a huge change to the team.

Yeah, I'd agree with that assessment.
You also have to take into account who United will appoint after Jose.......
What if it were Zidane or Deschamps?
French legends that Pogba would surely love to be captain for...!

Not sure how reliable L’Equipe is but they’ve been reporting for a day or two that Zidane wants the United job and I think if he comes in then there’s no chance Pogba leaves as Zidane was his idol and I see Zidane making Pogba captain also.

Feel like I might be making a left of field point here, but I think there isn't a hope in hell of us letting pogba go while he has a contract, as he is so commercially important to us.

Like United, Pogba is presented to an audience of millions around the world on the pitch in the form of slick passes, thrusting runs and stuttered penalty run-ups, but also presented off the pitch as clickable, likeable and shareable content. And, again like United, Pogba’s ‘commercial side’ is seemingly immune to underwhelming performances. While a few of us might feel disappointed with Paul's time here so far, this has had no effect on how important he is to the clubs hierarchy, nor has it damaged the image of this young talented footballer that people like and want to like. His partnership with Adidas is worth 35 million quid and is just entering into its third year of a decade long contract, bear in mind Barca are a Nike team.

That is why, upon news last week that Pogba had returned to training unsettled and unhappy, club sources stressed in the most forthright and certain terms that he would not be sold. Pogba, simply put, is too valuable. He is the face of United’s future. The face of our future is wearing a frown because he does not feel appreciated by Jose.

With his comments, Pogba, perhaps, wanted to demonstrate his power – to show, after a year of being marginalised by Mourinho, that he is fully aware of how important he is to United. Rather than put the flames of speculation out, he fuelled them, knowing he can, because what he represents – talent, flamboyance, marketability – currently holds more sway at the club than his manager’s particular vision of success. Even if Pogba was not performing- and currently, he is - then his poor performances would likely be tolerated for a considerable amount of time, simply because he offers so much more to the club. The same cannot be said of any other player in Mourinho's squad, nor Mourinho himself.

The old saying goes that no player is bigger than the club. However, when we signed Pogba, we consciously elevated a player to our level, aligning his image with our in order to invest in a long commercially successful partnership. Unless Jose and Pogba settle their differences soon, Jose will come to realise where our loyalties lie.

I feel like I read a lot of that in a newspaper earlier this week.

Anyways, I don't actually agree. Pogba's brand is worth more because its at Man Utd losing him wouldn't devalue the United brand.

Man Utd sold David Beckham, the most advertisable footballer you can imagine, and the brand didn't even take a dent.

If you're good looking, good at football and wear a Man Utd shirt you will become a commercial powerhouse. The shirt itself guarantees that.

In terms of brand recognition I can't think of many players who could actually enhance United's attractiveness.

Him being "figuratively" the face of the club may very well be the problem. His performances are not good enough to warrant that, and the club is becoming too much of a soap series.

I am getting very tired of him.

He's not justified any sympathy with his attitude or overall performance.

He's going to end up turning the fans against him.

He's got the best job in the world Pogba does, and the more he takes it for granted the more he'll be detested.

Mourinho IMO has not said anything that is not true, he has pulled up Pogba on his poor performances for the club and asked that he performs as disciplined for United as he did for France during the WC. Which btw, he had a poor 2/3 games before he started to play well.

Jose's signing his own death warrant with pulling shit like this. He isn't SAF, and he's only got us to 2nd while making half of our fanbase suicidal in the process.

If he carries on, he'll see that the board won't hesitate to feck him off if the summer transfer window was anything to go by.

Pulling shit like this?
Pulling shit like what exactly? Having a word with his player for being out of line?

Don’t believe that for a second, Sun journo being present at hypothetical 1-to-1 meeting between Jose and Pogba? Give me a break. It can all be Raiola talk trying to stir up shit or Sun being Sun both are equally plausible.

This article doesn’t even make sense, Mourinho being offended by public talk from the player and asking to keep everything in house when he himself doesn’t hesitate to splash out at his players in the media at a first opportunity. That would make him total hypocrite?

What exactly is wrong with what José is saying? I think it’s more than fair enough to ask him to speak face to face than through the media.

Regardless it’s probably not true so.. meh.

Why are you trying to make out the views of this article are your own ?

Its the Sun people, ignore it and move on. Selling Pogba this window simply isn't an option if we want to be competitive this season.

:wenger:

So SAF is the only manager who is supposed to tell his player to not feck up in the media and tell him if he has a problem ?

Pogba is one at the mistake here. Mourinho praised him pre and post match and gave him the arm band, and instead of using this as a chance to announce his commitment to the team and close all the issues, he went on and bithched in the media saying he will be fined if he talks, completely irresponsible behavior from our supposed captain.

And after saying such quotes he expected things to be rosy with his manager the next day they meet in training ?

Any manager would have basically told Pogba to either behave or feck off. People are supporting players' power over the club now?

This seems to me as the polar opposite to Fergie’s “no player is bigger than the club”.

I know that we are a different club now, and we have to treat our prima-donna’s with kid gloves, but it’s just sad.

In my opinion, if he wants to go that desperately, wait til next summer, whether we have a new coach or not, ship him out for 180m and buy a new midfield. There aren’t too many players out there that will directly replace him, but I’d prefer having 4 great players than 1 worldy that no longer wants to be here.

This is, of course, assuming all the news has some grounding in truth. If not, keep him and let him kick on.

Really? Are you best mates with your boss? Do you go pub together and have long talks about the meaning of life?

For most people your boss is your boss, he or she isn't your best friend or surrogate parent. Most people don't have any relationship with their manager outside of work. Plus the relationship in work usually consists of being told to do something and having to do it or get fired.

I'm sure there's millions of people across the world who feel negatively about their bosses, why are we behaving like Pogba might be a unique case? However, much like Pogba did against Leicester, those people go to work and they get on with it. Given how well Pogba played last Friday why do we care how he feels about Jose, especially as there's no indication that he's going to pull a Courtois?

Pogba's paid to do a job, he's doing it and there's every indication he's going to keep doing it. I remember Ronaldo playing with a face like a smacked backside for the first half of 2008/09, after not being allowed his Madrid move after we won the Champions League. Still Ronnie showed up, he did his job and he started smiling again as our results got stronger. I expect Pogba to be the same.

This soap opera like stuff is being blown way out of proportion.

He’s not going nowhere. They can’t afford him anyway. His agent best look towards Madrid.

I know I'm a Liverpool fan, but speaking as a human being, can you not reference The Sun? They're just vile and full of nonsense, even without taking Hillsbrough into account.

They're the biggest newspaper in the country, so there will always be some people paying attention to them. They do print some absolute bollocks, but Custis isn't so bad and this piece looks genuine.

Maybe there was a meeting, but 'incredible bust up'? Also, any other links besides The Sun or Daily Mail?

To add many before me, I don't think United will sell this summer or even fire Jose. I expect both Jose and Pogba to be professional this season. Next season? Who knows?

Although this supposed disagreement can't be good for the club as a whole. We don't need distractions after shambolic transfer dealings.

In print yes. But Daily Mail has most online+print readers. Oh I despair...

What does this mean? It looks genuine because it says what you already believe to be true?

Contains a number of specifics including a verbatim quote, rather than the usual caveats/qualified assertions/vague language etc - ie it is unlikely to have been concocted by some imaginative journalist. At a guess, it's Raiola's doing.

When Jose stops throwing his players under the bus publicly, then he might have the moral high ground. If, as this report says, he's told Pogba not to go public then it's a case of do as I say, not as I do - that isn't exactly displaying good behaviour or leadership

Don’t believe that for a second, Sun journo being present at hypothetical 1-to-1 meeting between Jose and Pogba? Give me a break. It can all be Raiola talk trying to stir up shit or Sun being Sun both are equally plausible.

My initial thought was this also, but it's come from Custis - the one journo on the Manchester beat who Jose seemingly hasn't pissed off. If anything, I wouldn't be surprised if this came from Jose's camp themselves to paint Pogba in to a corner.

What exactly is wrong with what José is saying? I think it’s more than fair enough to ask him to speak face to face than through the media.

Again, read my reply to Rossi.

Pogba has bitten his lip for the best part of 6 months while Jose has done everything and anything to undermine him. Just read his interview with ESPN before the World Cup which gave a hint as to what he was feeling - in particular, when his manager had asked him to say something about Jose on the record - he didn't and kept it private but chose to last Friday because he was in a position of power. When the shoe was not even half on the other foot, Jose didn't hesitate to undermine Pogba, even to the team's own detriment in the case of dropping Pogba for Sevilla at home, so don't give me that bullshit that Jose said and did what he did pre- and post-Leicester was for the club's benefit, or even Pogba's own good. He did it to save his own bacon.

Really? Are you best mates with your boss? Do you go pub together and have long talks about the meaning of life?

This soap opera like stuff is being blown way out of proportion.

The day I get paid X hundreds of grands a week, with an entourage blowing smoke up my arse and my employers have employed me as the centrepiece of their mid-term marketing strategy, is the day I'll be acting like Pogba has been acting. Until then, I'll just say the stakes involved in my 9-5 pale in significance to the importance of Pogba's so such a comparison is moot.

Also, it's a bit rich of you saying the boldened when almost all of your posts on this topic (be it in this thread, the Di Marzio, the Transfer Tweets, and Pogba's performance thread) have all been about stoking the flames of negativity and saying Pogba's off despite reports from France and most serious reports in England saying otherwise and that it's likely a ploy to get improved terms...

:nervous::rolleyes:

Pulling shit? Fanbase suicidal..
Car crash of a post.

If you could engage with what I said, it would be nice. But then, I suppose that's asking for a little too much if your posting history is anything to go by...

See above.

They don't have quotes from Pogba, Jose or Riola. It names no one. The quotes have zero credibility without a source.

The sun churn shit like this up every day.

If there is any truth in the Sun article then I'm glad. It's not like Jose could just ignore the comments to the media, Pogba must have known there would be repercussions from saying stupid shit publicly. All round good management in my opinion.

In fairness, since its by the Sun i'm extremely skeptical if theres any truth to this at all, given their track record of complete lies...

But by the off chance and this MIGHT be true, Jose has a point. I'm not a fan of his at all, and argued he should go before Pogba in a separate thread.. But he would be in the right here. Very silly comments by Pogba after being given the armband and getting public praise. Then if he had the balls to say 'speak to me through my agent' :wenger:.. thats crossing the line. Jose would have good right to lose the plot with him.

But like i said, it's the Sun/Daily Mail, therefore 99% chance its a fabricated bulls*t story to cause some controversy as they usual do

We will see if Pogba is captain again come Sunday
