Dele 'Muhammad' Alli | Walker takes the finger from Dele | FIFA open disciplinary proceedings

Age has everything to do with it. Young people make bad choices, maturity - especially under pressure is something that comes with age. This suggestion that he has a "fracas" in every game? Lots of players could be tagged with that - not least Fellaini here who leads umpteen challenges with his elbows regularly and gives away numerous fouls - and has done since he was in the PL, yet there's little moral outcry from United fans about him. Incidentally nor was there about Eric Cantona or Roy Keane - players the fans loved but who often strayed the wrong side of the line. It's total hypocrisy.

There is an obvious line between "kicking/punching and being a pain in the arse" and being a player who is difficult for the opposition to play against in closing down and not giving an inch yet staying the right side of that line. That kind of work ethic, commitment and aggression - if controlled is a very valuable asset in a player. I'm not suggesting punching opposition players is a sensible of acceptable thing to do and clearly this age he needs to learn to control it and direct it in the right way. A ban and time to think will likely help that.

I can't get away with the moral outrage that some seem to attach to what is generally a very stupid act - for which he will be rightly punished, will serve a ban and hopefully learn his lesson. A few days ago he won the PFA player of the year and most would have agreed he deserved it. Yet now, he's a "thug", akin to Luis Suarez who's punched and kicked his way through the season. It's just sensationalist nonsense.

It's especially bizarre when I suspect 99% of the people criticising him would love to have him at their club, as would every manager in the Premier League. I also suspect if it were Rashford or Martial then United fans would praise their spirit and point out their relative inexperience.

What other young player out there has been doing what Alli does?

I don't want to go through every point, because otherwise I feel we'll go round in circles, but my question is, would Alli be the same player (by that I mean ability) if he stopped his stupidity?

MODMINS, BOMAYE ! MODMINS BOMAYE !

Not having it lost at the bottom of a page.

he reacted stupidly, just like other young players have done in the past, for example Rooney and Roy keane before they matured

whats the big deal? he gets a ban and moves on

why do fans and media feel the need to demonize everyone?

That's impossible to say. As was said above players with an edge, with aggression and with tha burning desire to win, are valuable commodities - if they stay the right side of the line.

What needs to be recognised here, that many seem to miss, is that young players, when they're thrust into the limelight, and in this case under pressure to perform in a side challenging for the title, may find it hard to immediately find that balance. This is why we all learn with experience in life and in whatever job we end up doing.

If I were his coach would I encourage punching other players? No. Would I sit him down, tell him to learn from his mistake? Yes - but I wouldn't tell him to change his attitude too much, just recognise where the line is and to stay the right side of it.

My point exactly.

Last week he was a deserving winner of PFA young player of the year in most people's eyes.

A frankly stupid incident and suddenly he's a thug and been at it all year. Funny how those outraged by it didn't mention it before.

Yes the lads hot headed and he will rack up quite a few red cards but you can't deny he's quality especially with ball at feet unlike Sterling

I think his arrogance is what makes him a good player

I think he has been pretty mediocre so far in the tournament. He has been a bad fit at this stage of the tournament against weaker teams. Alli is a great athlete and shines in high tempo matches in which there is a lot of pressing on defense, a lot of movement on offense, and end to end action. But England is playing at such a slow tempo that what they really need at the 10 spot is a more creative player who can unlock a defense. When England comes across better teams, and the game is played on the break or more openly, he might be a better fit. Right now he is not offering much, even if he got a touch on the ball for that second goal.

Not good today, but ultimately he tried and in the end got an assist, thought it was good composure to keep the ball alive and flick it on. Not muich was going for him today, but i thought he didnt hide and that is positive for a young player at this stage.

He's surprisngly very mediocre technically for a #10. You'd think he was up there with Sturridge, Wilshere & Lallana the way people were raving about him but his first touch is erratic & he isn't the best dribbler.

Wasn't great but with Rooney in the side he isn't playing in his optimal position. Still thought he looked comfortable enough at this level. Kane on the other hand looks slightly out of his depth but might be down to tiredness. Have said for a long time that Kane would not thrive at high end CL level but for me Alli would.. he's destined to feature for a top European side. Needs to move soon or he will stagnate there.

Do you mean he isn't at those 3s level when it comes to technique?

I think him and Kane has suffered from the hype around them, and i agree to some extent he is not the special number 10, technically he is good but not at a brilliant level, nor he has the ability to go past players in tight space or thread through balls from a tight space, but he obviously looks talented, has a good linkup play and great ability to hold off challenges. but i think this is a tournament a little too early for him.

Rooney in the side has absolutely nothing with him not playing his 'optimal position'.

The formation we (England) play, and have been playing for quite a while now, is a 433, where Alli, more often or not, has been playing as the most advanced midfielder in a three. Today was the same. If you watched the game you would have seen Alli was always the furthest forward of the midfield three, with Dier sitting and Rooney in the middle of both.

Are you sure? He's playing as the furthest forward midfielder in a 4-3-3, not sure how it could be any better for him really.

You said it better. :p

I can't believe some people are blaming Rooney for Ali's awful performance

I'm surprised people haven't blamed Rooney for Harts mistake as well.

Gets nowhere near the amount of criticism that Fellaini gets when he is actually a much dirtier player.

It's becoming apparent he can't handle extremely high pressure games. Highly likely to do something mental in them.

That's a leg-breaker and he should be punished severely for it. None of this 3-game rubbish.

Disgusting challenge from the most overrated player in the premier league.

What a filthy little scumbag. He genuinely tried to injure that player. No thought in his mind other than to hurt his opponent. That wasn't even a bad tackle. It was assault. Plain and simple.
