Declan Rice

If United signed Wan Bissaka, Neves, Rice and Sancho, with Toby alderweireld on the cheap that for me would be an exceptional summer.

Then look next summer for a younger top class CB and another striker.

That's how you build a top side.

All of them bar Rice would be good but bloody expensive. Just stick Ndidi in there ahead of Rice or Ndombele if he’s attainable.

That's my pick for a United first eleven next season.

Again I don’t agree, I feel a-lot of his exposure is mainly down to the attention his international career generated. After that, the hype just kept on going especially on here.

Not true either, Rodri had nearly 50 games under his belt for Villarreal at 20 and became a Spanish international a year later. Ndombele was also a starter for Lyon at 20 and became a French international a year later. Both, for me, are technically miles better than Rice and better overall players. Ndidi is also a better player for me, he’s miles ahead of Rice for tackles and passes this season and I would rather we sign him if we are going the PL route.

He’s British and massively overhyped, alas he’ll cost a whacking great fortune.

Agree on all of the above.

From what I've seen he looks a decent player, good ball winner and tidy on the ball despite generally keeping it simple. I just don't think his style of CDM is what we need atm.

I'd prefer we brought in a better playmaker back there, paired with Pogba and a hard working box-to-box type such as Barella. Neves hasn't blown me away this season considering the price tag touted. Tonali has been mentioned as a prospect of a similar mould? Haven't seen him play.

Having said that, if we go with a ball-winning CDM then I think we need somebody more mobile than Rice. Ndidi has impressed me and is only 22, looks a better fit to me. Ascacibar looks good in his highlights also but have only seen him live once or twice, seen him mentioned a couple of times on here and definitely a good age for our rebuild I'd say.

Anyway, ayye - I think he's perhaps a little overhyped due to the English factor, we could do better shopping elsewhere.

Rice reminds me of a young Carrick, when we signed him. Carrick wasn't an elite player, but had very good potential. He didn't turn out too bad of a signing for us, did he?

Carrick wasn't elite? Carrick was a playmaker at the time we signed him. we even stifled him by making to play a second fiddle to Scholes and saddled with lot of defensive works in a 2-man midfied set up. I think it was in Fergie's last season that he started to come out of his shell and also under Van Gaal who used him as the playmaker he is.

There's nothing similar between Carrick and Rice.

I really like Rice, he's obviously a very good midfielder.
The only problem is they'll see us coming from a mile off and want big money for him.
If we can get a good deal then I'd love him at United, if not Ndidi as some have suggested would be decent too.

If Ole is going PL ready players/English players then to me the obvious list of targets we can narrow down from imo are as follows.

Declan Rice
Aaron Wan Bissaka
Harry Maguire
Toby Alderweireld
Christian Eriksen
Ruben Neves
Matt Doherty
Wilfried Ndidi
Jadon Sancho
Son Heung Min

Outside of the non PL reputed targets like Meunier, Bruno Fernandes, Koulibaly and Ndombele I do hope we are in the race for Joao Felix who looks like a prodigious talent.

Again. You are still ignoring the fact that he has played incredible amount of games at such a young age, play regular & perform well which lead the attention of his international thing. If it wasn’t the case of the amount of games & the performance, he wouldn’t get the attention.

Rodri only played 23 La Liga league games when he was 20 and 3 La Liga league games when he was 19. Rice played 26 PL games last season when he was 18 or 19 and so far he had reached 32 PL games this season.

Ndombele played in Ligue 1. The magnitude of Ligue 1 games & PL games are different level. And he played in Ligue 2 when he was 19, and only half of the 32 league games when he was 20 since his birth month is December. He made his senior debut when he was 21. Rice made his England debut when he was 20.

Rice can still make more improvement in his game and as a British, there is also a better chance he will stay loyal in a club than foreigner player who might end up joining real or Bayern or PSG or Juventus

Ndombele isn't a DM in the mold if Rice. He is more of a box-to-box midfielder.

Ndombele, Rodri and Ndidi are the exact style of player that we need. This obsession of a ‘defensive shield’ is weird. Very few teams play with these kinds of players. Even a prime Matic was a good all-round player and not purely just a ‘shield’ in front of the back four.

... so we don't need a Busquets/Casemiro? Or even Verratti? My point is that if we are looking for a player to play at the bottom of a pivot in a midfield three, then Ndombele probably isn't the right choice. However, he would be excellent on the right side in the same midfield trio as a box-to-box midfielder.

Rice, Ndidi and Rodri are more comparable players as they are all defensive midfielders.

I agree on the point of wanting the DM to be better on the ball and offer more, but of the 3 you listed Rodri is the only complete player, Ndidi is worse on the ball than Rice and Ndombele isn't very good positionally, you couldn't truly trust him to hold the fort if Pogba is still here, he'd be no better than Fred, in fact I think worse defensively.

Have I missed something? Aren't Ndidi, Rodri and Rice all defensive midfielders?

Yeh the game is just passing him by at the moment...seems content to just sit sweeping that deep central area.

Yeah I expect Pellegrini to change it up a bit given how much space the likes of Moura are enjoying. Rice needs to be more involved

Looks like a tactical thing to me, he's just sitting behind Alli and seems reluctant to chase out wide.
Yeah he's very deep almost like a 3rd centre back. Think it's because Spurs are playing without a striker.

Personally, I feel we need a more Busquetes type player. For me, Rice is more of a Dier and I feel we need to streer clear of that kind of role.

Ndidi is probably the most attainable and he’s been on an upward trajectory since joining Leicester. If I could pick one to play the base of our midfield it would be him. On Ndombele, yes he’s probably more comparable and more of a replacement for Herrera.

Rodri is definitely the best by a long shot. Well, I’ve watched a lot of Ndidi since he arrived at Leicester and his passing and overall contribution in the final third has evolved immensely. He plays far more risky, incisive passes than Rice so maybe his overall passing % might be worse, but I feel he’s a better, passer, tackler and overall player with not much in the age difference.

I've seen Leicester a few times this season and if Ndidi has gotten better on the ball it's not much IMO, he's still nowhere near good enough on it for what I want at United. As for him being a better tackler than Rice, he might well be, I think Rice is positionally good for a young player but defensively there's not a lot in it overall IMO and Rice has gotten massively overhyped because he's performed in a couple of big games and twice against us which has some United fans thinking that's his weekly level.

They are but the most limited for me is Rice who I feel plays far more of a ‘Dier role’.
They all play the role defensive midfielders do. Protecting the back line, covering for their teammates and winning back the ball.
You have been going on about this Dier role, and I'm yet to really get what you mean by that and it's association with Rice.

He’s limited like Dier. The rest have far more to their game....

Not too sold on Rice myself, and would prefer Martial to be replaced, but cant argue with the rest. We should be all over Neves.

Ole wants more English players. Rice is still young.
He would allow us to be a more possession oriented team and for two more attack-minded players in front of him.

My trident would be

Van de Beek———Fernandes

I know our team isn't good rn but is replacing our entire midfield in one window the answer? Don't think so. I'd be happy to see Herrera and Pogba both stay and start
