Deadpool (contains spoilers, obviously)

James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy director) Facebook post about the success/lessons from Deadpool is an interesting read:

James Gunn said:
"The film has a self-deprecating tone that’s riotous. It’s never been done before. It’s poking fun at Marvel. That label takes itself so seriously, can you imagine them making fun of themselves in a movie? They’d rather stab themselves."

That's a quote from Deadline Hollywood, attributing it to a Hollywood "suit." I love Deadline and get a lot of my film business news from them. And I love Deadpool even more - the film is hilariously funny, has lots of heart, and is exactly what we need right now, taking true risks in spectacle film - but COME THE feck ON. That's no reason to rewrite history. This quote has to have been said by the dumbest fecking Hollywood exec in the history of dumb fecking Hollywood execs.

Let's ignore Guardians for a moment, a movie that survives from moment to moment building itself up and cutting itself down - God knows I'm biased about that one. But what do you think Favreau and Downey did in Iron Man? What the feck was Ant-Man??!

Come on, Deadline.

After every movie smashes records people here in Hollywood love to throw out the definitive reasons why the movie was a hit. I saw it happen with Guardians. It "wasn't afraid to be fun" or it "was colorful and funny" etc etc etc. And next thing I know I hear of a hundred film projects being set up "like Guardians," and I start seeing dozens of trailers exactly like the Guardians trailer with a big pop song and a bunch of quips. Ugh.

Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.

Deadpool wasn't that. Deadpool was its own thing. THAT'S what people are reacting to. It's original, it's damn good, it was made with love by the filmmakers, and it wasn't afraid to take risks.

For the theatrical experience to survive, spectacle films need to expand their definition of what they can be. They need to be unique and true voices of the filmmakers behind them. They can't just be copying what came before them.

So, over the next few months, if you pay attention to the trades, you'll see Hollywood misunderstanding the lesson they should be learning with Deadpool. They'll be green lighting films "like Deadpool" - but, by that, they won't mean "good and original" but "a raunchy superhero film" or "it breaks the fourth wall." They'll treat you like you're stupid, which is the one thing Deadpool didn't do.

But hopefully in the midst of all this there will be a studio or two that will take the right lesson from this - like Fox did with Guardians by green-lighting Deadpool - and say - "Boy, maybe we can give them something they don't already have."

And that's who is going to succeed.

Have a great day.

I agree with him - I don't think the success of Deadpool automatically means that R-Rated comic book films will be an instant success/make a shit-ton of money. Future Deadpool films will of course, but other then that, it'll be a case by case basis.

I think this film had a lot of things going for it, which meant it could be a success in 2016 instead of say 2010... they are:

a) Comic Book films oversaturation... I reckon people being bored of your typical superhero movie created a huge interest in this. It's something different
b) It's narrative... Failed appearance in Wolverine, 10 years to make, etc. etc.
c) The marketing was ridiculously succesful.
d) Releasing an R-Rated film on Valentines Day - when couples will be able to go to the cinema. A small thing, but worth pointing out.

So yeah, I think Deadpool benefitted a lot from narrative and a perfect storm of events... I don't think other R-rated films will benefit from the same circumstances.

Watched it again yesterday, still as funny, still as cheesy. Remembered everything from the first viewing and caught things that I'd missed.
You have to take it for what it is, a group of guys making a movie that makes them laugh and appeals to like minded others.

Went to see it today and my only complaint was feeling like I'd seen too much of it due to the goddam trailers.

Loved it though, very funny in the right kind of stupid way, it's almost like the character was created for Reynolds, he's absolutely perfect for it.

Another point I agree with. There were a few parts that were a slight anticlimax in.that I already loved them from the trailer, but you can understand why they did it when you think of how they felt they really had to sell.it..

Honestly, this movie wasn't as good as I expected. The humour and script was not bad, but the storyline was too generic and not befitting of Deadpool at all. I mean, Deadpool isn't someone to fall that deeply in love with a woman so much so that he'd get rid of his powers. That's not Deadpool! Then, the whole movie doesn't show us enough Deadpool. There's way too much Wade Wilson and not enough Deadpool to really make this worth it. I feel like Marvel made this first movie as a sort of prequel with the next couple of movies showing the actual Deadpool and not Wade Wilson.

If this movie had more Deadpool and less Wade Wilson, I'd have given it a 9/10. However, for me, this movie's a proper 4.5/10 for its shallow, cheap storyline, boring, generic characters (bar Deadpool), and a lack of Deadpool, overall. The only saving grace was the script, the humour, and Ryan Reynolds doing as best as he could to portray Deadpool under such a restricted, limited scope.

What's especially sad is that the beginning showed so much promise, and then it all went downhill from there...
Not enough direct references to Deadpool for my liking. Three Deadpools out of Deadpool.

I loved it. Ryan Reynolds is perfect as Deadpool. No one else coulda played that role. I did feel there should have been more action and the climax wasn't as climactic as I thought it would be. Morena Baccarin is so good looking.

Anywho, solid 8/10 from me.

Spitting image of an old friend of mine I haven't seen in years..

Thought it was terrible with some mildly funny bits. Wanted to leave for all of the movie save for maybe 20 minutes in the middle of his origin story. Tries to be a movie that pokes fun at cliché.. while indulging every cliché it tries to elevate itself above. Kingsman didn't make that error, knew when to take the piss out of itself and didn't come off irritating when it did it. I mean both fairly juvenile films but I enjoyed Kingsman a hell of a lot more than this garbage.

Sorry, huge Deadpool comics fan, just thought this was awful. Excellent performance from Reynolds though.

Amazed at the sea of positivity. Only film I've ever seriously thought about walking out of. Had my coat half on during the last scenes. Pure muck. Childish, 12 year old humour.

I'm the total opposite. I watched Kingsman last night and thought it was much inferior.

I enjoyed the film a lot and I'm someone who not so long ago would run a million miles from a 'comic book' movie. I hope for the sequal they keep it 15 and don't lower the age-rating to exploit the initial popularity of the first.

I will be very very very surprised if they change the rating or lower it. I think part of the appeal is how crude DP is which cant be portrayed in a lower rating.

I do hope Deadpool's success will encourage movie studios to produce more R-rated movies. Getting tired of all the PG-13 movies in recent years.

I enjoyed it but considering what I've heard about it and the rating it's got on IMDb (8.7 at the moment, only 0.2 behind films such as Pulp Fiction and Schindlers List, for example) I was slightly underwhelmed. Thought a lot of the comedy was cheesy as feck.
Love the fact it was a marvel movie with gore, swearing, sex, drugs - all of it.

Also, the trailers definitely showed too much. Some of the best parts of the bloody movie had mostly already been shown in the trailers, such as when he's first going after Ajax.

Pretty much any majorly hyped movie starts off well at IMDB and then gradually drops in its rating. Hell, Godzilla started out with an 8+ or something and is now a 6.5.

Ah right, fair enough. Regardless, was still a bit disappointed in it. All things considered I'd give it about 7.7, which is still a great movie but not up there with the best.

Yeah I think they should have saved some of the jokes for the movie rather than blowing them in the trailer. but I kinda can see why they did it for the first part. Im guessing the sequel marketing (mostly trailer) will be different given they now have a fanbase and people know what to expect.

hehe.

I'd doubt it would happen. They pushed hard for it to be Rated R, which Fox were resisting to at first. The comic isn't for kids, so the film shouldn't be either.

Well that, and the fact it was a good film. Gunn's basically just saying "commission good, well written films, regardless of whether they're R-rated or not, and not R-rated films regardless of whether they're good or not"...Hollywood hasn't learned this lesson in it's long, sprawling history. It's unlikely to learn it any time soon.

Saw it again tonight and holds up well despite knowing the punch lines. The story is decent and well paced. This time around, the inside references and 4th wall stuff got more laugh

Deadpool and Wade Wilson are actually the same person. Deadpool is just Wade Wilson with a red superhero costume on.

They really could've made the trailer better IMO. No complaints with the film but the first fighting sequence was literally shown scene by scene in the trailer.

Enjoyed this so much more than the trashy Captain Americas and Avengers that keep releasing every few months. A breath of fresh air

Do people think that Deadpool 2 will see Vanessa as Copycat?

Given Copycat is Vanessa, ill be surprised if it doesnt come to it (maybe even in the end or maybe when they crossover with Xmen.
Good question though

Just back from seeing it and I enjoyed it very much. Not quite as good as Kingsman because as others have mentioned, the villain was a bit meh. But otherwise very funny and entertaining.

I made a complete fool of myself laughing my hole off, as the only guy in a cinema full of Singaporeans who got the first Sinead O'Connor dig
