I can't believe people expect him to sign a new contract just to drive up his price for us, that'd be some way to impress your new employers. Especially considering we're discussing him leaving a couple months, I could maybe understand if we'd convinced him to sign a contract last summer under the impression that he'd be allowed to leave this summer but obviously that didn't happen.

That said, at 20mil I'd rather just keep him next season and let him leave for free after that.

Nothing is stopping him from renewing his contract, personally i think he's off.

We shouldn't force him to finish his contract here, i don't want anyone to be here against his wishes, and he's been a true professional with great attitude during his time here. so let him leave if that's what he really wants, we'll be just fine.

Probably leaking this themselves, to put pressure on De Gea to sign. I think he's off, he was always gonna end up back in Spain eventually. I'd rather get all the fuss out of the way and find a replacement. Gives us chance to build from the back again.

I think he'll stay. Don't have too many reasons why but I just think he will. Like always though, as much as I hate using the phrase, no one is bigger than the club.

If we don't sell him this summer, what will Madrid do? Will they just wait out the final season of his contract while Iker continues to cost them games/goals with mistakes? Or will they be too impatient and go after someone else? It's probably too much of a gamble and they would happily just wait it out anyway.

Good, what's the point in their 'special relationship' if Madrid cannot raid Tottenham of their best player each season  Maybe one year, Tottenham will get a Madrid Castilla player in return

I think that the best thing United can do is to wait until the end of transfer market, trying to do a very difficult transfer as Levy did. I don´t think that they will go away but probably they will over pay. If is not coming easily, then Madrid will force the player to make a move, in that moment David should be more clear about his intentions. In any case Jorge Mendes deals with many players from both teams and the club relationships are good, so maybe the solution is some kind of swap

Who would Real Madrid be willing to give up that would actually help us? That is why I not that interested in a swap. I doubt they would have any interest giving up Varane, Carvajal, Kroos, Bale or the one who shall not be mentioned to just sign De Gea. And I really do not think the likes of Coentrao, Arbeola, Illaramendi, Casemiro or Jese would help us much if any.

I was thinking about Coentrao, or maybe Navas,Jesé could be great (loan) The one who shall not be mentioned you mean Cristiano? It would be shocking but not impossible

Send death threats? Kidnap his family? There's really feck all we can do if we wants to move

Really? Are those methods usually used in players contract negotiations? If yes, then why not.

I'd imagine the club are trying to keep him, it's obviously down to the player and not the club. He's been our best player for 2 seasons now and the club know it. I'd be very surprised if they're happy with what's happening. The reality is if he wants to leave he'll go regardless of what the club do.

He'll go back to Spain one day I'd imagine, I would of liked to of hoped he would sign a new contract and stay for a few more years but it looks increasingly unlikely now.

I hope they are, not bend over, but use everything in their power to convince him to sign an extension. He is that important to us. We have enough money to make it worth his while.

I actually believe that he is going sign a contract extension with us. How many goalies get the adulation that Dave gets from our fans? Also, he looks genuinely happy and committed to the cause.

He may want to go back to Spain eventually, but for now, hopefully with CL football, we can offer him everything in footballing and monetary terms. And I haven't read anything from any genuine source to suggest that he is pining to go back. It's all speculation from the usual sources.

Can't wait for the headlines,

"De Gea signs a new United contract till 2019"

and just below,

"United bid 40m for an unsettled Gareth Bale"

;)

I voted yes to the poll. Wishful thinking though I think, you have to think he'd have signed a new contract by now if he was staying just to stop all the uncertainty.

I saw a dream tonight that De Gea has extended his contract. I am not kidding.

I still can't see him leaving but what could be the possible reason for him not signing a contract? He claims he's happy and I'm sure we've offered a brilliant wage deal.

Haha, I had the same dream a few weeks ago. When I woke up I didn't know if it had been a dream, or if it had happened the day before. I was gutted when I checked the BBC and realised it was the former :(

Maybe he wants to be sure about top 4, he said recently that a club like United can't afford to miss out on the CL twice in a row no matter what.

Why are Madrid not interested in Courtois?
Because he has a long contract and Chelsea would not let him go. He's not Spanish either and De Gea has been better this season.

I don't really understand why everyone is so sure De Gea will go to Real Madrid but players like Torres have been 100% ruled out because of their previous affiliation to Atletico. Why doesn't anyone ever say that about DDG? Not that I think he wouldn't be open to a move, I just don't understand why he seems to be an exception to that stupid rule. I think DDG will sign for us.

Quality Spanish players like Aguero and Silva too have never left for Madrid either, just because you're Spanish doesn't mean you're automatically joining Madrid.

Aguero is Argentinian and Silva never joined Real Madrid because they never wanted him. Aguero would have probably gone to Barcelona or Real Madrid if they wanted him too.

He's not Spanish, he doesn't even own a Sombrero.

It's like the Argentinian Inquisition in 'ere.

Well LVG has pretty much confirmed what we all knew. We've offered him a big deal, but he's yet to respond. If he doesn't sign then in all likelihood he will be sold.

I'm still adamant he's waiting to see if we'll qualify for the CL first.

I don't think you can take a lot from what managers say about players contracts in their pressers, it means nothing as no one know what's going on behind the scenes, remember Fergie and his speech about sheep and stuff before Rooney signed his contract?

I'm actually surprised how many people seem to show new-found disappointment upon hearing this quote from Van Gaal, upon reading the twitter thread.

It's depressing, but surprising? Not at all. We would have obviously offered him a contract a while back - he's fecking De Gea after all. The fact he hasn't signed it months ago is a worrying sign. Whether he's waiting for the top 4 or not, I still think he's Madrid bound.

Nothing worse than going to the Caf and seeing the the De Gea transfer speculation and the De Gea replacement thread at the top of the page.

Why wasn't he offered a pay raise in 2013 and extended 2-3 years then?

Shame we won't get a good price for him but can't blame him for wanting to go back home where he can be with his bird as well.

Cheers for the memories Dave you Grinchy looking spaniard.
