And what point would that be?
That he doesn't need De Gea, or any of his best players, to be amazing. Like he doesn't need a working formation, or players in their correct positions.

Well then he can get rid of all our best players just to prove a point.

Yeah, he's going to sell his best player just to prove a point.

Some of you lot are genuinely mental.

Well, we don't need to retain him for financial reasons. We can "afford" to make him see out his contract and buy another top keeper, and not be fazed financially (I think this was his point)

This. Having him next season even if he had made it clear that he wasn't signing a new deal and wanted to leave would be better than the £15-20m we might receive for him.

We can comfortably afford to do this.

Must admit, I thought he signed a new contract. Went on instagram to see United positing a picture of de Gea earlier, only for it be stating that he won MOTM.

Baseless speculation.

No. I don't think he'll sign a new contract and we will sell him in the summer for Gareth Bale.

If De Gea leaves, it'll be because he refused a new contract and the club's hands are tied because he would be a free agent the summer after.

If he does leave this summer, and Bale arrives at OT, then prepare for the hordes of people lambasting LVG, Woodward and the club because they think the club actually wanted to sell De Gea for Bale.

In a nutshell. They'll be quiet if Bale bangs in 25+ goals though.

Well in fairness it would be quite annoying at the time. Selling our best player regardless of who comes in. IF it proved to be a good deal or we didn't miss him hugely then people would probably go quiet yes...there's no point in complaining about a non existent issue.

The way we are performing at the moment doesn't exactly help our case:lol:

If we don't sign him up to a longer deal in 3 months he's as good as gone IMO. It's been awfully quiet on this subject recently, no assurances etc.

I hope there's no truth in these stories, the whole thing would just suck immensely and we'd be left without a top keeper and spending a fortune on a player who doesn't even seem to fit LvG's tastes.

Even if we do sign him up, that is not a firm assurances of him staying, because any new contract could also be a courteous gesture to increase his transfer value. Re : Ronaldo or Suarez.

That said, I think De Gea will stay provided we finish in the European spots and bolster the squad further in the summer. Casillas is still very much of a heroic figure in Madrid, the fans love him as one of their own and he has improved considerably this season after his dodgy form in last season and getting rekt by Jose in 2012/ 2013. Would Perez force him out just as he is improving and invite public ire, especially with the political culture in their board and membership base ? I'm not too sure of that.

True, but at least if he signs we've got the insurance of receiving a big enough fee to get the best available replacement and still be quids in.

Well it obviously is the clubs fault if De Gea leaves for practically nothing now, they should have tied him up to a new contract months ago. Now De Gea holds all the cards.

Hopefully he signs a new contract and if he wants to sketch on the club and feck off later then sell him to Barcelona not Real Madrid. That club is run by absolute cnuts who want to take our best players all the time. Feed their biggest rivals potentially future the best keeper in the world.

How do you know the club hasn't tried to get him to sign a new contract ages ago?

No, no, it's the club that is inept. Nothing to do with the likely situation that there is no way that de Gea would have signed a contract months ago when things were still uncertain.

I don't, but surely he would have most likely signed on because he probably had very little bargaining power back then. This isn't even a new thing, we always seem to leave contracts this late because usually we was never desperate and we could tell the player to gtfo.

What? Of course he had a lot of power then as he's been one of, if not our best player for the past couple of seasons and with Real Madrid making it clear of their interest in him, he wasn't going to sign the first thing offered at him.

I hardly heard of any interest regarding Madrid and De Gea before the summer. It wasn't until De Gea's brilliant performances this season that he's been heavily linked with Madrid.

I always thought he would sign on, but the Valdes signing made no sense at all and i think it signals that we are thinking about life without De Gea, hope I'm wrong though.

Or maybe he didn't want to sign because United were having one of their worst seasons in history with a seemingly bleak future, and maybe he caught wind that Madrid were interested in him.

Fact is, we don't know what goes on behind the scenes so people should stop assuming that the club isn't trying their best to retain one of the best players at the club.

Just because the papers don't publish stories doesn't mean things aren't happening. We didn't know anything about Herrera signing until a few days before it happened.

I think it's pretty obvious why he hasn't signed yet, his agent is Mendes.

De Gea has been linked with Real for a long, long time.

Last season was our worst season in the Premier League era, with Moyes sacked, Giggs in on a temporary basis then getting van Gaal who had the World Cup to contend with this summer, de Gea wasn't going to be signing a new contract. When the season started, we went off to a slow start and there has been hardly any reason for de Gea to accept a new contract. He knows that Real Madrid are interested and he's held pretty much all of the cards for a while now.

For those who think van Gaal would want to sell de Gea to prove some sort of point, you're mental. If de Gea is to be sold, it'll be because he and his advisors have said that he doesn't want to sign a new contract and wishes to leave.

Tbf we could have offered him a new deal already by the end of 2012/13 and made him sign it as we were in a strong position back then with 3 years left on his contract. But then Fergie's retirement, Moyes appointment, his forgettable season, his sacking, LvG's appointment and now a not so good season followed and meanwhile he has only 17 months left on his contract.

Generally the club has been in a mess on and off the pitch since Fergie's retirement, DDG's contract is just a part of that wider picture.

If Fergie hadn't worked hard enough for more than 2 decades to make us that rich, we would now be like the Milan clubs, as we are in a similar mess, but our money is saving us / will save us.

biggest asset at the club other than OT itself. if real come for him i think he'd be off in a heartbeat. all this stuff about AM and RM not grabbing players would go out the window with spanish dave. i hope he stays another 10 yrs. but..............

I wouldn't be surprised if we lost him to real madrid. Though I would hate to see it happen. If the rumours about Bale for De Gea have any shred of truth in them, I think it would be a mistake not to try everything to get him signed onto a long contract.

He is among the top goalkeepers in the world, so is a player we should be looking NOT to lose, irrespective of whether we are actually in for Bale if he is available this summer.
