If it means breaking the bank to keep him then we'll have to do that.

Following on from P. Nev's horrendous statement yesterday that Hart was better than DDG, he has this to say...

Shame he decided to follow it up with...

Well Van Gaal doesn't deal with the contract side of things. That would be Woodward.

Nevertheless, Van Gaal is in his own right to put the pressure on Woodward to get the job done. He can always say something that would read between the lines "I need him at the club for a long time FFS!"

I'm sure Woodward will pull out all stops to re-sign him, remember his quote about being tired of "seeing all the best players heading to Spain".

Given what Woodward has spent on players coming in, expect David to be on at least eleventy billion pounds per month when he signs his next deal. And he'll be well worth it

Just sign Koke or whoever was his best friend at Atletico.

Even Nacho Camacho would do if they're friends.

Quite frankly, at this point I'd be quite happy for Woodward to relocate us to Spain if it means keeping DDG.

They should re-name the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand to the David de Gea stand. Re-name Sir Matt Busby Way to David de Gea way? I'd suggest a statue but it's too soon, imo. Give him whatever he wants, fcuk it!

How have we let his contract run down to 1.5 years left without a renewal? I swear Ando and Nani had their contracts renewed with about 2 years left on their remaining deals? Or have I imagined that?

We've got no idea what's going on behind the scenes. May have been in talks with him and his agent for a while for all we know. Just think the uncertainty with the club over the past year has held things up a bit.

It's been a joy to watch his progress over the last few years. Incredible how journalists wrote him off so soon, a teenager coming into a foreign country, finding his feet in the PL.

Now he's in the top 2 or 3 in the world.

Brilliant stuff.

Yeah, that is very true. I just hope he isn't holding out until the end of the season to see how we and Madrid finish up.

In all likelihood he'll end his 4th season with us with just the one medal to show for his efforts. It would be understandable if he looked over at Madrid with an envious glance (if they win the league or CL again)

He'll be abused 'til he changes his mind regarding Fletcher and Herrera now too, no wonder he failed as a coach.

I was laughing towards the end, as he became a one man wall. There was simply no way past him today.
His development curve is amazing right now, you can visibly see him improve as the games go past. And they say goalkeepers reach maturity aged 30, so who knows how good he could go on to become.
The club deserve a lot of credit for signing him for big money at a young age, and having faith in his talent and our training methods.
Given his very young age, I don't think he'll be in a rush to go back to Spain. He can sign for us for another 5 years and still not be 30 at the end of that contract. He has time on his side to play for Barcelona or Madrid.
If we can keep him, put 2 quality centre back in front of him, we have the makings of a rock hard spine to our side that can dominate PL 2 CL football for years to come.
Genuinely exciting to see this work in progress team evolving.

He had his 2nd contract with 2 years to go yes, but his current deal was done with 6 months to go (and basically everyone saying he's leaving). I think we changed the way we do contracts during that time.

Also if we gave Anderson a new contract at any time I'm going to feel sick... Just... dont...

Ando got a nice shiny 5 year renewal in 2010.

:(

I'm not sure we can take anything useful from LVG's comments tonight, but should we be getting concerned?

Excluding Mata, Muniain is his bestie, IIRC. Coincidentally he is also Ander's best bud.

He didn't say that Fletcher is better than Herrera, though. Herrera and Fletcher are very different players, and I actually wanted Fletcher to come on myself (wanted him as a ball-winner instead of Fellaini, because I half expected him to do something stupid and get sent off!).

But as I love Herrera I wasn't exactly screaming for Fletcher...

Anyway, back on topic: De Gea is brilliant. So many of those kinds of saves that he made a few of today is so underrated, so it's nice to see him getting praised for it properly now this season. I expect him to go back to Spain at one point, but hopefully that won't be for a few years yet. Sign him up!

The only reasoning I can see de Gea refusing to sign a new contract is personal reasons and wanting to live closer to his girlfriend. He's made it no secret he loves it here, and how he enjoys how much he feels wanted at Manchester United. I'm sure any contract offer will be substantial too, so money isn't an issue. If he does want to live closer to his woman, then there's not much we can do. Big Dave is a romantic, but you gotta love him. Best 'keeper in the world right now.

Would be great to see DDG contract wrapped up before the end of the year. He is one of the main reasons we are anywhere near the top four right now.

Don't want to digress much but I think Herrera is a better bet than Fletcher no matter the role or the situation. Fletcher has lost that explosiveness and tenacity that made him the excellent player for us. He is not that great on the ball under pressure and when you consider both these options one can surely understand why Herrera was selected over Fletcher.

Woody needs to pay whatever it takes to tie down De Gea on a long term contract. Against Liverpool he again showed that he is the difference maker for this team this season. He is the reason why we avoided another result like the one against Leicester City, because Liverpool were slicing through our midfield and defense like it was butter.
