Day 5: Germany vs. Portugal

Looks like Germany aren't underestimating Moutinho....

Could be our first draw here. But I hope not, continue the trend and both should go all out.

2-0 or 3-1 Germany. First i thought 3-1 but my final tip in games is 2-0 now. We play 4 CB's

Boateng has played against Ronaldo before and always did an excellent job as RB against Ribery and Robben. He's good defensively and quick for his size.

Not just for his size, he is actually even faster than Ribery/Robben (was timed in training as fastest player in the Bayern squad and is among the BL players with the highest top speed).

So Ozil and Gotze are outwide, and none of the full backs are really capable of attacking. Germany are going to be so narrow.

Anyway, just hoping we get a better game than 2012.

Why can't the much hyped up Carvalho get into the team ahead of Veloso?

Because Paulo Bento is a very conservative manager and he prefers to count on international experience rather than potencial. Miguel Veloso has been playing in our midfield for many years now and in the major competitions. I´d play Carvalho who i consider the better player but i understand Bento´s point of view specially when we are playing an opponent as Germany. If we fail to control the midfield i expect him to put Carvalho in just like he did against Sweden.

I reckon Cavalho would be the safer bet then Veluso.

If he gets a run in the team i reckon people will see why he has a 35 mill price tag.

To me Germany look vulnerable if things get physical in the middle and coutinho picksa pass.

This Eder guy,he must be better than the other cfs? apostiga and almeida again.what do they do to get in that squad?

I have the same opinion but i think Carvalho will probably get to play in the second half.

Eder has alot of potencial but he had a very difficult year with one major injury. Almeida had a good year at Besiktas and played well in the friendlies before the world cup so he deserved to be in the line up.

Postiga and Almeida get in the squad because we haven´t produced a decent striker in about 20 years  :(

Looks like Germany will be triple-teaming Ronaldo, with Lahm probably drifting right, Khedira helping out too, and a proper centre-half at right-back. Stop Ronaldo and you stop Portugal (at least in an attacking sense), so it's understandable. Wonder whether Muller or Gotze plays up front.

Optimistic to think that Portugal don't have a goal or two in them.

I think it will be much tighter too.

No team wants to lose the first game, it's a long way back especially with Ghana and USA who are no pushovers losing this could mean having to win the next 2 games no draw possible.

Our central players (both the CM and CAM) will have their work cut out for them to create something going forward. I still think that playing four CBs is way too devensively and will cost us width in the game, especially if Özil and Götze, two players who naturally drift inside, play on the wings.

The most mindblowing thing for me is still that we play someone on a position he has played a grand total of one time in the last three years and that was also nearly two years ago.

Not really.

Germany's right side will be exposed defensively. Özil plus Boateng against Ronaldo and Coentrao doesn't look strong tbf, but we'll see. It's probably the same on the other side, altough I haven't watched Höwedes too much on left back position.

I am predicting boring game.

I know mate my ex was from Lisbon and her brother clued me in a bit.

But you seem to have a few pacy tricky n0 9 coming through, hopefully sort that position out.

People are underestimating you guys and i really think, like Holland itll work in your favour.

I hope for Portugal's sake Ronaldo don't break down in the first 5 minutes.

You imagine Germany will try to rough him up and get him to do something to get sent off

How so? They still don't have a proper number 9, and Nani has largely been awful since 2012.
Not for Portugal he hasn't. Coentrao? Moutinho? It's not like Ronaldo's the only outlet they have. He only scored one goal for them in qualifying. They put 5 past Ireland a week ago with him not scoring any.

Viva Ronaldo! However the chances of him disappointing (great opposition, multi man marking him and his injuries) are quite big.

No Carvalho for Portugal? Thought he was supposed to be a starter?

Strange line up from the Germans.

Ozil won't help track Ronaldo/Coentrao down the left, Boateng isn't great at right back, so you'd imagine it'll pull Lahm out of midfield and leave an unfit Khedira and Kroos exposed.

Almost 3/1 on Portugal is really really tempting. I don't see where the goals will come from for Germany, Howedes and Boateng don't provide much attacking threat from the full backs. I think Ozil plays best when he has strikers stretching the play, something Gotze & Kroos don't do well. Muller is the biggest goal threat I reckon.

You really are a weirdo. Don´t think Germans will resort to that kind of tactics.

They have a solid defence, a very capable midfield, but no number 10, no top class striker, and Nani has inconsistent at best since 2012, even for Portugal.

Just hope they keep underestimating us.

No worries, neither has anyone on the planet.

Wrong. Nani hasn´t been inconsistent for us at all. I don´t argue about United but at our national team he is always one of the best, no doubt about it.

Its funny because even a good striker I.e Mandzukic, Jackson, Hernandez would transform this team into a top top side. Defensively great and a midfield who knows how to function properly.

Fun fact: Germany's starting eleven today put together has scored 48 goals in national league and Champions League, exactly as many as Ronaldo has scored on his own :lol:

Most Portugese fans would disagree with you on that one, and they've probably watched their own team more than the rest of us. Regardless of Nani's club form, he's generally always good for them.

Nani hasn't been inconsistent for us at international level at all.

Is this another back five? Struggling to see anyone playing at left back other than Lahm, then Boateng right and three other centre halves. I was thinking perhaps Kroos and Khedira in front of the five, then Ozil behind Muller and Götze?

Howedes at left back probably with Lahm in midfield on Moutinho.

Boateng really isn't that quick, or at least his acceleration isn't that great. IIRC Bayern conceeded only goal at Bernabeu because Coentrao outpaced him. But I don't think he will be problem for Germany anyway, I just don't think he is that quick as people are saying.

Thank god that Podolski isn't starting. I'm a lot more content with this line up that the one that was proposed earlier.
