Day 5: Germany vs. Portugal

I'm going for 2-0 for Germany. I guess 4CBs mean they will take rather cautious approach. Normally I would say 1-0 but this WC is crazy, they will score 2.

Why are they still talking about England vs Italy 2 days later when there is a game on in 25 minutes that involves 2 world class teams?
I know right? And their just saying the same things over and over again!

This just seems to me like Löw really wants to park the bus. True, securing a draw against Portugal would increase Germany's chance to go to the knock-outs, but there is no reason Germany should have to do this.

Portugal XI : Patricio, Alves, Pepe, Veloso, Coentrao, Ronaldo (c), Moutinho, Almeida, Meireles, Nani, Pereira.

Germany XI : Neuer, Howedes, Hummels, Khedira, Ozil, Muller, Lahm (c), Mertesacker, Kroos, Gotze, Boateng.

It really is amazing the talent Germany has this year. They are just absolutely stacked in pretty much every position. That front 3 of Ozil, Muller, and Gotze is tasty.

Sadly, as expected, Paulo Bento doesnt have the balls to start W. Carvalho, i just hope he doesnt regret it too late.

It would be the perfect game for him, Veloso is hardly a physical player or a good tackler so that means Moutinho would will have to do more "hard work" in the midfield than he should've.

As for Hugo Almeida, even if our options are very limited its once again a typical P. Bento pick.

CB's in fullback with wide players who prefer to cut inside.

Gotta feeling Portugal will exploit them out wide.

There is a weird trend of fielding seemingly disjointed teams with clear divide between offensive and defensive units. Netherlands, Argentina, Germany...

Maybe it has to do something with conditions and preserving energy.

it's not healthy long term.

He really has the pressure of a nation on his shoulders, needs to deliver or it will be on him.

He gets the pressure on him for the good, and bad.
Oh come on

He loves all the pressure and thrives on it!

Oh come on

I'm sure he does

What I'm saying is he can't have it both ways, when Portugal are doing well and he's quite happy to have the pressure and attention on him, but when they are losing not to expect the same type of criticism the English press and fans are dishing out to Rooney.

Is Schweinsteiger injured? If not why the hell is he on the bench?

Schweinsteiger, Khedira, Lahm, Neuer all just now returning from injury. But Löw might for some reason fancy Khedira over Schweinsteiger. That said, if Kroos wasn't there, I'm sure Schweinsteiger would play. They're just too similar to both be playing.

I don't think the German team is very good. I think we'll see alot of passing with little end product.

Reus, Gündogan, Bender, Gomez, Kiessling, Kruse at home though. Plus some new promising youngsters like Meyer, Volland, etc hehe

I'm confident now that only one out of Podolski, Klose, and Khedira is starting!

Yeah I'm pretty bummed about Rues and his injury, was really looking forward to seeing him play. Gundogan missing out is disappointing too.

How Meireles is starting over William?
I'd start with Meireles and use his experience in a game like this. Always seems to play well in international tournaments from what I can remember, may be wrong.

The Portuguese side is the same as it's been for about 10 years. Horrendous.

They always step up in big tournaments though

They barely scraped through the last few tournaments, having to rely on the playoffs.

Veloso hasn't been linked with us yet this season has he? That must be due..
