Day 5: Germany vs. Portugal

What's all the talk about Germany being great so far? They got a soft penalty and then played with one man more for about an hour against a team that played quite crap. I'm not rating anything like that. I'll wait until they have a proper opponent before I burst out into celebrations.

I think Germany are a bit soft, but they were going half gas for the whole second half. This could have been a massacre if they had wanted.

Now for the game everything has waited for.. Iran VS Nigeria and Queiroz's masterclass

Portuguese pundits really laying it on the players and Bento specially. It looks like Coentrão´s world cup is over.

Deserve it in all honesty, especially Pepe and Bento.

Ronaldo is likely to redeem himself against USA and Ghana by getting them 2nd, but can't see them winning.

My thoughts:
1. Löw got the tactics spot on. Maybe he is not as clueless as everyone is saying...
2. Pepe is an idiot. If Portugal fail to advance it would be his fault.
3. Ronaldo is such a primadona. One decent free kick in 90 minutes is not enough if you want to be recognized as the best in the world.
4. Nani was involved in the most dangerous situations, but as we know he is terribly frustrating. Lack of game time this season shows.
4. Müller is a good shout for the golden boot.
5. The false 9 system is not dead - the Germans not only make it work, but make it exciting by eliminating the boring tiki-taka stuff.
6. Ronaldo's free kick technique (used by Bale and others as well) might not be as productive with this ball.

You know what? This is all irish fault. We trashed them 5-1 and thought we would win the World cup after that. What a rude awekening :(

Penalty was correct but you have to admit Muller is a clown just like Pepe.
His reaction was really over the top, but then again, almost every player does it these days. However I respect him for reacting angrily to Pepe's headbutt instead of rolling on the floor. It was simply stupid by Pepe.

I've noticed the World Cup ball is not as light and doesn't move through the air as much as previous ones, the free kick Ronaldo had he might of scored with the last World Cup ball but it didn't move much in the air despite the power it was a pretty comfortable save for Nuer.

Exactly. With the old ball it was enough to just kick it hard and rely on the ball to wobble in the air and deceive the goalkeeper.

You're right, they could've. But there wasn't anybody out there trying to stop them, so I think they had a nice day out in the park rather than a serious competitive match.

This was standart Muller procedure. He is the same in the Bayern matches i watch. Always flapping around and shouting at other players and refs. If it was a portuguese player you would quickly point to the antics. He is an "artist" just like Pepe. Being 24 perhaps he can change his ways but Pepe is a lost cause.

Shades of Keane and Ballack. Lots of young kids watching this, and will be doing this in grassroots football, he's no role model when things don't go his way pretty disgraceful tbh.

I dunno why he was protesting so much for, the game was over.

I wonder if he would of protested so much if he wasn't the designated penalty taker for Portugal.

I don't like Löw but he does get the tactics right more often than not. He's quite inept though at influencing the match when things aren't going well.

What did you make of Nani's performance?
Nani was Portugal's best player. If the rest of the team had all performed better than Nani and Nani had exactly the same game, then Portugal would not have lost 4-0. But on here, Nani is the reason Portugal lost 4-0 and everyone else on the team was shit because of Nani. Ronaldo would have scored 3 hat tricks if Nani wasn't playing.

Their problems will continue if they keep going back into major tournaments with the same players. It's like they're afraid of taking new players from their league and integrating them into the team.

The thing is, do Portugal have the quality coming through in the youth team?
