Day 3 | Poland vs Netherlands | Slovenia vs Denmark | Serbia vs England

Yep.

Usually I blame him for everything, but today it showed up just how average our attack actually is. Foden in particular just doesn't seem to get it.

True. But he also spent the rest of the game losing the ball. Today we will take it, next one when we lose 2-1 then it's a problem.

Did he actually create anything else?

Nah he was rubbish, just falling for fouls instead of working hard to hold the ball up.

Didn't read the quote properly so that was about Kane. Saka was one of the only decent players in the first half.

Kane was consistently holding the ball up and buying foul after foul in the 2nd half. Why would you take him off when he's the doing the job he's being asked to do well?
Because in a game when a ref doesn’t give fouls for him collapsing AND/OR in a game against better opposition, that’s not enough in the last 30. Pace is deadly and a fast sub (against tired defenders) is a gimme.

It took him 70 min to take off TAA, foden was trash the whole match. He puts bowen but leaves kane who was basically walking at that point. The team needed speed to kill them in the counter. Put palmer and watkins. Instead he made subs that invited pressure and let serbia take all the initiative.
Add to that some of his choices for the starting eleven were so poor that he needed to spend subs to fix problems that should have been obvious enough to avoid from the get go. I just don't get what Southgate wants on the pitch. It all looks so utterly clueless and disorganised compared to teams with better coaching.

Palmer for who? To my knowledge he doesn't play left or center forward, and he's not that fast.

Honestly there are no changes that fix England.
Foden. At that point serbia was unbalanced, you don't need a fixed attack, just put a couple of creative guys to help bellingham and kill them in the counter.

That's why I mentioned bad instincts, like santos. This was not a final or a knock out match against a top opponent, it was a group match against a very average serbia, you are a top team you have to show it and be a bit more ambitious than finishing the game defending a one goal lead like a mid table team.

I don't think anyone did a lot tbh. I would say our defenders were the most effective.

So what was your point again?

I said he was the best player on the pitch, you suggest I might not say that if he hadn't have scored, I asked who was better then...

He was the best player on the pitch for me. I'm not saying the best player on any pitch, but out there on that one at least he gave a shit and tried and had impact. I'll take that all day long over the rest of the drivel England normally serve up despite all the hype (including the likes of Foden, TAA and to a lesser degree Saka).

Tell me what he’s saying. I switched it off after the final whistle.
He was basically saying bringing on defensive players gives the players on the pitch a negative mindset that they have to sit back whereas we should bring on more attacking players and have the ball other end etc.

I'm saying our defenders did a better job at defending than he did at attacking, so pick whichever defender you think did best.

Our pundits are horrible - relax, you won 1-0 against Serbia. They didn't come to fly kites and watch you play through them. Casually asserting 3-0 predictions based on nothing and then having a whinge fest when it doesn't transpire is so on brand. Serbia have some really good players too

So the age old English football philosophy, put on the big named players, doesn't matter if they are out of position or don't match eachother. Flawless m

That second half was dire from England. England were very good for most of the first half though so there's something to build on. Should probably be looking at bringing in Mainoo or even Gallagher for TAA next time I reckon.

Perhaps Foden is just a system player

I think its that, and also this formation and his position stops him from using his strengths.

I mean the comparison to the Scholes situation is pretty obvious when it comes to great prem performances but getting shoehorned in to the England side.

I think a mid three of Palmer, Bellingham, Bowen is worth consideration. Palmer likely to score more than Saka, whilst Bowen did a lot more than Foden tonight. Behind them is Rice and anyone that can walk ahead of TAA. Back 4 the same until Shaw is fit - sooner the better.

Was watching on my phone but we looked pretty toothless. I suspected this would happen. Hopefully when we face someone decent we can drag them down to our level and beat them in a scrappy game. Southgate could cement his legacy by winning the Euros with a bunch of 1-0s.

Ah who am I kidding, we’ll be out in the quarters.

I'm talking about the last 20/25 min, not doing it as a system. Good managers adapt during the match, read the situation and the opponent and go for it. Average managers do the obvious subs and cross their fingers. It works when you're playing serbia, it gets you killed when you play france or spain.

Southgate’s squad selections looking so bad. Grealish and Rashford offered something so different. Instead he’s just picked such a samey squad with players who look very meh in his system. He’s just heard that Foden’s decent but has no idea what to do with him. Same old England.

I assume you mean front 3 (please god mean a front 3), I would play Gordon instead of Palmer. I like Bellingham instead of kane.

Bellingham is brilliant . I don't think we have figured out how to have a midfield and a cf with him in the role he plays yet .

Top managers don't throw players on our of position and completely unbalanced praying for it to work 1-0 against Serbia in the group stage. No manager is that stupid.

There’s basically a 0% chance of Southgate dropping Foden AND Saka.

lower xG in that game than any of the 380 premier league games last season.

With an attack that collectively scored how many goals last season?

I'm sorry but Southgate is really absolutely clueless and he'll throw away this tournament like always. Anyone with half a brain knows you don't sit back against a big and strong team like Serbia. Play a high line and control possession and they have no threat.
