Day 19: Brazil vs Mexico and Belgium vs Japan

I assume you’re referring to kickers and punters. They’re not football players.

No, not necessarily. Every player who experiences contact can flop. Not every contact in football is as heavy as some people believe it to be.

My prediction was Brazil in the semifinal and losing to France as always:lol:Lets see if we can stop that Belgium attack.

Hope Brazil win the WC and Neymar scores a hattrick in the final, just for the Neymar haters

Brazil don't look brilliant but are very very solid: more so than Belgium and France, imo.

Anyone has a GIF of the Neymar incident, the playacting one

I don’t get the joke.

HIstorically, your government doesn't like the UN, and you scarely pay your dues, so it's amusing that you'd use them as a souce of fact.

Lumping Mexico in with Central America makes it easier to deny our continental relationship and possibly rationalize that wall.

Not saying that specifically pertains to you, mind.

I appreciate that.

I’m quite pro-UN and just think it pertinent to point out that the UN (and other organizations) have included Mexico in with Central America.

It’s down to it stretching so far south, the same as Russia stretches so far east.

It’s honestly why a lot of Americans can’t get behind the sport. Toughness is valued in our big sports and then you’ve got stars like Neymar being divas.

Never understood this myself. Always seemed like a misapplied standard. Basketball players dive all the time - I never watch NBA anymore but I remember that Vlade Divac would fall down if you sneezed on him. And baseball has overweight non-athletes pitching and people standing around chewing tobacco and spitting all day long.

Of course I shouldn't be surprised when I first went to school in the States and some kids literally said to me "soccer is a communist sport".

Basketball is definitely the lowest of the 3 in “toughness factor”.

Your idea of baseball is amusing, but yeah, there’s the occasional CC Sabathia, Derek Lowe, and Bartolo Colon on the mound.
What would you call them? Just punters/kickers?
Yes, that’s exactly right, actually.

“You’re not a football player, you’re a kicker” is a sentence that could be heard on any football field in America.

Tbh, I think the concept of Central America is dumb. The isthmus of Panama is the separation point between North and South America. Calling some of it Central America is just done to segregate the less economically successful countries from the ones with better GDP to the north and probably a heavy does of racism, too.

I’d say I agree with you there. I’ve never quite understood the point of “Central America” myself, either.

Are you a child?

The hate Neymar has been getting has certainly been over the top from some corners. I heard Mexicans all weekend hoping he gets injured, calling him puta constantly, getting called puta myself, etc. Honestly the Mexicans fans lacked the most class this WC.

The problem lies in sports that gain an advantage by feigning injury, football/soccer is 1 of them. Basketball can also, but not to the same extent.

Baseball / American football also has pretty much zero incentive to act hurt, so they'll try their best to do the opposite.

It's a shame but certain countries take it too far, Portugal/Brazil/Spain/Italy all seem the worst for this, but that's probably why they always do well, they push the rules to the extreme.

It's a shame but certain countries take it too far,
Yes it is indeed. It gives a damn good sport a bad reputation in a country that, if we put as much into it as we do other sports, could be quite good at it.

Believe me, I wish soccer could get away from the “pansy sport” reputation it has in the US.

It’ll take a massive crackdown on the play-acting that’s prevalent in those countries. Maybe that’s where VAR can end up doing the most good.

I think baseball is the lowest on toughness factor. Also, I had the misfortune of playing baseball a few years so that's where my amusing impression comes from :(
