Day 18: Croatia vs Brazil | Netherlands vs Argentina (QF 1&2)

What's with everyone's hard on for complaining about Argentine behaviour while totally ignoring the Dutch behavior during the shootout?

You know the stuff that Dumfries was actually booked for (confronting Enzo on his way to take the pen he subsequently missed) during said shootout?

Does everyone just think that Argentina are a bunch of Panto villains for absolutely no reason whatsoever ?

Could it possibly be in response to this?

That looks suspiciously like a bunch of Dutch players making their way over to speak to Lautaro Martinez as he goes to take the final pen.

Probably just wishing him well because those guys are so noble and virtuous

Edited to add Enzo's pen

And after he missed

Probably all rushing over to tell him to keep his chin up, so classy.

Yeah its very easy to see a photo and see it only on face value but this encounter was full of shitbaggery (is that a word? It is now).
Both teams were involved in the dark arts only to be outdone by the ref who was on a different level altogether.

Jesus Christ.

I'm still not aware what happened.

Lahoz showed a whooping 472 yellow cards, but no reds, none or which were to Messi, blew his whistle a record 9743 times, finally beating Mike Deans long standing record of 9732. He also set a new record for the longest referee whistle at 121 seconds and the most blows on whistle in a minute 234.

Other than that Brazil shit their pants and lost to Croatia on penalties . Argentina nearly blew it but beat LVG's orange face on penalties.

Fair enough. Of course I am biased here as I should be. I am just p*ssed by some people crying over Croatia winning because they don’t attack like prime Brazil. It’s a very small country and they don’t park the bus. Theirs achievements are phenomenal.

I understand your frustrations. It also infuriates me when people compare this Croatia team to, say, 2004 Greece (a team thoroughly undeserving of a major tournament win). Croatia have consistently performed at the highest level for the better part of two decades now and their efforts have borne fruits, playing a very respectable brand of football in the process.

I have a hangover and my voice is gone.

It is staggering that the dive and subsequent decision to award a penalty seem not to have been questioned.
There was another incident later on where I thought Netherlands had a good shout for a penalty themselves. Surprisingly, we didn't even get a replay

I have never seen any team do this. Surely there should be further consequences for this.

I thought it was a pen. But didn't the Dutch have a pen? BBC didn't even show a replay and there was no mention of a var check. Swore gapko got tripped up

Don’t agree with any antics during the shootout from the Dutch as it isn’t classy at all.

But Paredes should of been sent off already earlier in the game for booting the ball at the bench on purpose, which basically incited the rest of the match between the two teams.

I’ve also never seen a referee so poor and inclined to blow for a free kick for anything.

I saw this and thought it was strange we didn’t even see a replay of it.

The Dutch were definitely not a basket of fruit, however the behaviour of the Argentinians was abhorent from the start. Play acting, gamesmanship and topped off by booting the ball at the dutch bench. All of which seemingly ignored by the ref.

All in all made for a combative and highly charged game, which probably made it better because the actual football was so boring from both teams in the 90 (not extra time).

Argentina deserved it on balance of play, but think Croatia might be a bridge too far. They won’t feck their pens.

The Dutch were every bit of cnuts as Argentina yesterday. That whole bit during the penalty was classless. I don't care about players celebrating in front of the opposition in such circumstances.

Neither team should act like the victim. Argentina were the deserved victors based on the game yesterday.

So we will have two teams from the last WC semi finals in the semi finals again! Could even be a repeat final…

The dutch deserved everything coming to them.

If you play that game, then expect to get it back when you lose.

Neither team was a villain. It is what it is.

The dutch were reactionary.

You have to be cnutish against a team that comes out with thugery from the start.

Argies have the worse combination of thugery and play acting of any teams.

Brazilians love to throw themselves around, but are rarely thugs.
Serbians are mostly thugs but rarely play act.

Oh, but Argentina....you have Messi and Di Maria who roll off the pitch at every touch and you also have prime cnuts like Paredes and Otamendi who aim to hurt players.

Just a rare mix of cnuts.

It's gonna take a really good ref for their semifinal game vs Croatia.

Because Lahoz was to blame for yesterday. Zero control.

Honestly they were both at it all game.

I for one LOVE to see it. They care, they want to win - they're trying whatever they can to get it done.

Give me that over cuddles and signature handshakes with the opposition any day of the week. It brought tension, drama and a real needle to the game.

This painting of the Dutch as innocent victims is fecking absurd on here. Like you say - both were at it and it was fecking glorious to watch

Agreed with all this.

The best team won in the end, but honestly didn’t think either showed anything special. They should be worried about Croatia because they’re a better unit than Netherlands.

Only seems to be Argentina playing the victim which is why many here are criticising them after the fact and not the Dutch players for relatively equal shit housery. Unless I'm just not seeing the Dutch sourgrapes post game.

I think people just like the 'underdog' story, coming back from 2-0 down and sticking it to Messi.

Paredes being a bellend kinda turned the neutrals against Argentina too. I just thought it was excellent.

The ref trying to be the star of the show and giving out 16 yellows, it just had it all.

Someone tell Argies that it was not the final yet.

I'm also glad that Lisandro is not on this picture. They have clearly the better team and deserved it more but this is utter classless garbage esp. form Otamendi and E.Martinez. I also wanted to gice credit to Messi but then saw the other picture and the "Bobo" video. Between Ronaldo and Messi it went from competition of who is the GOAT to who is more childish.

I love the fighting. Also Argentina over celebrating isn’t anything new. They do that after every big game they win. Their fans don’t stop singing after a dead rubber win. It’s just how they do things

What's wrong with being competitive and showing passion? A bit of trash talk and winding up the opposition is fine and has been a part of sport for decades. No need to be so soft about it

I missed that. What did they do?

Although introverted and shy, Messi really shows his massive ego at times  Super petty.

I think I saw Lisandro talking to Cody Gakpo for quite a while after the game. I am sure it was him.

yup, can't wait for the footage of him crying after losing the world cup. Even better if it's against Ronaldo, not that i want him to win it either after the stunt he pulled, but i want messi to lose even more now

Id say 3rd would have been best choice, at least that way he definitley gets to take one and not as defining as going first if that makes sense.

Waiting to go 5th is stupid.

Isn't this a bit of a silly debate though? It's not as if the best players necessarily have the highest probability of scoring. WC history is rife with greats who missed a deciding penalty.

I say it again. They are now what Germany was in the 1980s. A team that doesn't have the verve and quality to compare with the best, but does have the collective ability and football intelligence to force any game onto their own terms and just refuse to get beaten. A dangerous opponent for anyone in a knockout game. They took down the favorites, the best team in the tournament, much in the same way that Germany in 1986 took down a France that had just come out of what many consider to be the best WC game ever, beating Brazil on penalties after a 1-1 draw. That game looked a lot more like all the games Germany had played than any of the games France had played, and it was the same yesterday.

I was really impressed by the way Croatia kept their heads cool and played their way out of any press Brazil applied.
