Day 18: Croatia vs Brazil | Netherlands vs Argentina (QF 1&2)

Argentinian fans also making jokes about Louis van Gaal's cancer on Twitter. Stay classy, Argentina.

atupid people, lots of them. Mexican’s laughing at Argentina’s economy and poverty, spaniards too.

Van Gaal talked too much, well deserved all the mockering.
Nah, everything what Argentina players did after the game was complete lack of respect. I understand everything what is happening during the game but when game is finished, have respect to you colleagues.
This was clasless. Messi and Martinez swearing and mocking Dutch managers, players are celebrating in Dutch players face.....zero fair play, zero sportsmanship, zero class and zero manners.

But hey, as i said earlier, all that shithousery can win Argentina World cup.

naah Argentina won because he’s been the better team

What did he say? All I’ve seen is he was overheard saying they had an advantage at penalties…presumably to his own players. What’s wrong with that!? The dude is 71, has cancer, and is going up against one of the favourites with one of the worst Dutch squads in yonks in his last ever football match. Just a weird flex to be pissed at him cos they lost a 2-0 lead and started a fight by booting the ball at his bench.

Argentina seem to have cycled through the entire Wenger/Klopp playbook of excuses, only for a game they actually won! It was all a bit weird.

Certainly interesting as a perpetually embarrassed and apologetic England fan by what gets excused as passionate football culture and what is criticised as arrogance, at any rate.

Apparently claiming you're partaking in a tournament to win it all just to instill belief and pride in your players heads is disrespect to your opponent now.

How dare Louis say opportunistic stuff like that. He should've just said they would lose, so Argentina would feel better!

he criticised Messi, he said they were going to win, he said that Argentina played with ten with Messi on the pitch.

17 minutes aggregate with no Var. Matheu Lahoz was another dutch today.

A coach said his team would win? OH NOEES!!

Also where did he say this? And if he indeed did, what utter thin skinned nonsense. I thought Ronaldo was the narcissist

This weird idea that Argentina were actually disadvantaged by the ref is so crazy. The ref was awful all night long but they definitely got out with a lot more, most notably a weird Messi bias and Paredes being on the pitch after what could arguably be a red card incident and at the bare minimum a double yellow.

Not to mention complaining about added time when your own player initiates a full-on scuffle for a couple minutes is absolutely crazy.

Way out of context. He said all the danger comes from Messi offensively, but on defence they play with 10. Nobody underestimated Messi.

Yeah he caused all that injury time

yeah, that left a really nasty taste. All this gloating for a dust up your own player caused. I was happy for Argentina to go through but after that I cheered the equaliser like a Dutch fan… just graceless victim complex shit.

all this bullshit about what Van Gaal said in a tame press conference is just cover for their own players bottling a comfortable game in normal time.

sad for you then.

sad for you then.

I don’t really care that much, I just find it weird how angry Argentina seem to be about a game they won, and should’ve won a lot more easily if not for their own idiocy.

Looking forward to distasteful the sun first page in case of England vs Argentina

I wasn’t, but after today I’m looking forward to playing all our distasteful behaviour off as just passionate football culture… apparently then it’s fine.*

* not the racism

Argentina certainly deserved it over the 120 minutes. The Dutch were very poor going forward until they started lumping it.

However Argentina also made a hash of things. I thought the way they handled the 2-0 was very strange. Conceding all possession, not bothering to attack and handing the ball back to the Netherlands who continued the aerial bombardment. That made no sense and showed a certain fragility the other teams will be glad to see.

I don't think Argentina deserved it either. The dutch for me were the slightly better team all game. However, like Croatia, it was quite clear they didn't have the fire power to cause any real concern. Argentina have a solid enough defence. On the other end, Argentina could rely on magic moments from Messi, so despite barely attacking during regulation, they could still find themselves cruising 2-0.

It's a tad bit annoying because I genuinely believe, France, England, Portugal and Brazil could easily have taken Argentina if provided the chance. Croatia are similar to Holland, but I think they are slightly better. The pressure from Brazil and the attacking brilliance they had to push them back made forced Croatia to have moments under the cosh. I don't really see that happening to them against Argentina. This Dutch side who have struggled to maintain possession all tournament, were easily able to control proceedings for much of this game. I think Croatia would have a much easier time at holding possession, with Kovacic and Brozovic having a bit more offensive influence in that game.

It would be really hard for a neutral/non messi fan to justify their support for this team.

Not if they have the full story. Argentina didn’t celebrate like that out of nowhere. Read the post match quotes. Dutch players were getting yellows during the shootout for bumping into the Argentina players during the PK’s and talking crap. People are acting like Argentina, who never behaved like this before in this World Cup all of a sudden thought to be cocky. Dutch we’re running their mouths like crazy.

Dutch with an xg of .48 and Argentina with 2. Literally 4 times better. There is no way a sane person would think the Dutch were the better team. Credit to their comeback but no way. Argentina absolutely outplayed by every metric but had a shocking final 15 minutes but looked good again in the second ET. They dominated 75% of this match.

Literally means nothing

That’s why I dislike Lelo Menso, his PR team sells an image of a humble saint, but he actually is an hypocrite arrogant cnut. At least Ronaldo is a cnut and doesn’t try to hide it, unlike that midget.

Utter nonsense. They look very ordinary outside of that one player. It’s also the most reliant I’ve ever seen a top side on one player in my lifetime.

Half the time his team mates are struggling to control routing passes or make 5 yard passes.

He is carrying them but the annoyance as usual with coverage of Messi is the idea that this is some unique situation he's involved in. Modric has the exact same expectation and pressure for Croatia's offence, Mbappe will probably have to be perfect in order for France to win as well. This is what superstars are supposed to do, play like superstars when the pressure is on. There are no super teams in this tournament, the team that wins it all may well come down to which team's best player performs the best. However, I would say that Portugal and England have a little more leeway with their depth.

The Argentina players must be taking the piss if they thought the ref was against them. He blew the whistle every time Messi fell over. He was absolutely shocking and should be nowhere near games of this size. Every time I see a game that he refs, he's absolute shite. He seems desperate for attention and the spotlight.

feck Van Gaal talking before the game, he can eat shit.

Very happy with that

The sycophancy around this average Brazil team was nauseating

Every world cup is the same. It was similar to Real Madrid when they had those really overrated but stylish teams that kept getting knocked out in the second round of the Champions League. The aura of their history raises the expectation of the actual team.

What's with everyone's hard on for complaining about Argentine behaviour while totally ignoring the Dutch behavior during the shootout?

You know the stuff that Dumfries was actually booked for (confronting Enzo on his way to take the pen he subsequently missed) during said shootout?

Does everyone just think that Argentina are a bunch of Panto villains for absolutely no reason whatsoever ?

Could it possibly be in response to this?

That looks suspiciously like a bunch of Dutch players making their way over to speak to Lautaro Martinez as he goes to take the final pen.

Probably just wishing him well because those guys are so noble and virtuous

Edited to add Enzo's pen

And after he missed

Probably all rushing over to tell him to keep his chin up, so classy.

This just shows how useless xg can be as a stat and also shows what I was saying. The Dutch struggled to construct chances despite having more control. Don't get me wrong, it was a pretty balanced game with two teams that lacked quality

mate, you can’t tell me it was a balanced game. Argentina were better for 75% of the match. The Dutch literally had only one shot (!!) after 80 minutes. Come On. Would have been a travesty if the Dutch went through but that’s football.

@colombianmancunian @Andycoleno9

this is why. You guys act like Argentina just did stuff out of nowhere when they never did anything like this in this tournament.

there you go, it was definitely provoked and boiling over

I'm afraid your check-tinted specs are clouding your best judgment. Croatia were lucky. Brazil were unlucky. Holland would have also been lucky if they had won today. Generally speaking: any football team could create only a solitary decent chance against another football team, score with said chance in the luckiest way possible, while the other football team fail to score having created good chances after good chances. I've watched football long enough to realise that these things happen and it's actually a pretty common occurrence. It's part of the game as much as anything else is.

Accepting that Croatia were lucky today doesn't take anything away from them. As a matter of fact it solidifies their reputation as a team that fights until the end no matter what, and that luck always favours the brave.
Fair enough. Of course I am biased here as I should be. I am just p*ssed by some people crying over Croatia winning because they don’t attack like prime Brazil. It’s a very small country and they don’t park the bus. Theirs achievements are phenomenal.

It's quite a sight to watch Croatia's intelligence and experience. Not the blistering excitement, but I marvel at their midfield play of Modric, Kovacic and Brozovic in controlling matches. They know how to play to their strengths despite their limitations up front. Gvardiol is the defender of the tournament. Strong spine, and more than the sum of their parts Vs other teams left with more individual quality.
