If Eto'o is available for around 20million as some of the papers suggest, I would prefer to go for him rather than Villa at 45million.

As for paying silly money - why not? If we don't spend it now it may not be available next year.
What's worse getting a slightly better then average player for 17m when his actual price is 7m or getting Benzema for 45m when his actual price is 30m?
In my opinion it depends on loads of factors
a) Age
b) Potential
c) financial value (how many shirts he will sell etc)
d) importance in the team.
e) nationality (Id rather see us sign a local lad then someone who will wet himself whenever Real Madrid is mentioned).
To conclude Id rather see us spend 45m on a 21 year old with great chances of becoming world class rather then 17m on a slightly better then average winger.On the other hand Id rather see us spend 17m on a slightly better then average winger rather then 50m on a 28 year old world class striker.

The banks to whom interest payments are due perhaps? The point being that if we have it and have the green light to spend it, then perhaps we should as who knows what that money might be required for in a year's time.
To be honest, I'm surprised Villa doesn't want to leave Spain. Seeing as how he doesn't want to leave Valencia. If he stays he'll have to play against them, something I'd have thought he'd want to avoid.
