David Villa | Monday 'defining day' for Spurs: Villa signs for Atletico Madrid

Besides the fact he's most likely leaving, that's not true that he was their most outstanding player.

He had a great run of form for a month and a half, but Higuaín was better over the entire season.

And Raul.

feck i hate to see them succeed at this. I just wish noone would bother with Real Madrid. I hope it somehow falls apart on the pitch for them.

Fair play, they're on a roll with their signings now. Expect Silva to come in for the left wing slot...

Can't wait for us to sign someone (please Alex...sign someone! anyone!!)

Not every club can afford to pay 130 million for two players.

No, but the big clubs can get their hands on 50-60m Euro if they believe they'll get the money back. I just don't believe you get that much money by selling shirts, even if you get a percentage of the players image rights.

Exactly what I don't want us to do. There is no point panicking like this, no player is bigger than United. We should deal with the situation with a cool head.

Perez's philosophy is that the most expensive players are actualy cheaper than other players because they sell so many shirts etc that the club wins a lot of money from their signings. There is some truth in this. Could you imagine the media hysteria about the team Real are buiding now?

only if you retain a significant portion of the said player's image rights. at united becks owned most of his own image rights. at madrid, he signed away almost all of his image rights to madrid.

i would like to know how image rights for our various players is handled by united. i imagine that madrid do a better job getting their players to sign off a higher percentage of their image rights to the club than we do.

Eto'o's out of contract next summer, surely worth a cheeky £20M punt?

If he leaves it'll be purely because of money.

Not sure I'd want someone like that here.

Sign him under the noses of Chelski/Madrid. He has the potential to elevate himself to the elite level of club football if his international status is anything to go by.

IMO.. Villa > Tevez or Benzema.

Discuss.

Yes, he is, but no, he doesn't want to come to England.

Plus I think Benzema will end up better than him.

Don't want to get involved in the muppetry but Benzema is head and shoulders above both of team in terms of ability and potential.

Thats remains to be seen, unproven outside of France. Villa is class act and capable of having a similar impact as Torres. Look at his goal scoring record, its very impressive. Works hard aswell, A top class player playing at an inferior club.

Top post! That's the impact we need.

He's brilliant, but this isn't FIFA or Football Manager:

1. He's not going to come here cheap, and we're honestly not looking to add another top-class striker to our work force because he'd request to play every match, that's what he's been his entire career.

2. He's 27... now I don't know about you, but i'd much prefer a younger player like Benzema or Aguero, someone we can mould into a United star, than David Villa.

I'd love to see it, but it wont happen really.

I don't think he will be better than Villa. Every time I have watched Benzema he has been shit apart from Lyon Vs United in the CL a few years ago. He was awful at Euro 2008 and has been average this season. I'd rather us sign Villa or somebody else.

He's widely reported as saying on numerous occasions that he does not want to leave Spain. It's either Barca or Madrid.

What we need is a striker, from lower leagues, who we think can fill in right away into our squad, willing to be 3rd striker, but at the same time, will make competition.

Ideally someone who can fill in the hole much like Jonny Evans in the Centre Back.

The days of the "role player" are all but over it seems, unless you can snip up a lad from your youth system.

I'll settle with Welbeck in that role please and thank you.

I am truly staggered at the amount of money they have magicked up. 60mill for Kaka, 80 mill for Ronaldo, and what, 50 mill for Villa? Jesus wept.

Just waste of money considering they will be managed by Pellegrini.

Hmm, if either Welbeck and/or Macheda can show quality next season, I would agree with you. It's all up to how well they can take the pressure I guess.

Breaking through the ranks at United as a striker can be so hard.

At times you have to take chances though, and I think now more than ever we might have to try.

If we can scoop one of Aguero, Benzema or Villa, as examples, for cheap, then let's do it.

But with that, what do you price as cheap? Clubs will request more, I expect Aguero and Villa's value to hit over 50, and Benzema will certainly attract 40 Million pound bids... in yesteryear, these players wouldn't cost anything close to that.

I say this money, in whatever installment we get it in, could and should be saved, barring one signing, either on the wing (Which is what we need) or in the striking department.

Talks with Madrid are supposedly stalled - most likely because Perez doesnt want to pay silly money for Villa as he's Spanish and therefore not a "Galactico", saving for his real galacticos.

Madrid supposedly only want to offer 35 million euros... Valencia want at least 35 million euros and Negredo in part exchange. But perhaps if we put in a better offer, say £40 million, at a time when Madrid are messing about and trying to low-ball Valencia, he could be convinced to come as its in the best interests of Valencia to get more money. Its still unlikely but worth a punt while Madrid are messing about.

Potential Benzema may have but he has thus far done very little to even warrant comparison with David Villa.
