David Villa | Monday 'defining day' for Spurs: Villa signs for Atletico Madrid

Hmm...A spokesperson from the Glazer family has announced we have £60 million immediately available for Sir Alex to spend as he wishes and that SAF is simply waiting for the moment. Now, if we were to spend £35-40 million on Villa, which is likely - that'll leave us the funds for a Robben/Young move. The truth is out there people.

Ballagues probably watching this thread with a big grin on his face.

We weren't intending on signing anyone else after last week - we feel we have a full squad - but the situation accelerated to a point where other clubs started to make bids.

So we had to decide whether we acted or didn't. We decided to act and he'll be the last person we sign. Soon after this, Gill's mobile rang and it was Ballague. Ballague said Villa passed him a message about joining United. I could not let this chance slipped away. Moments later, I received a text from AdZzUtd. AdZzUtd said Villa passed him a message about joining United. I couldn't hide my joy. I was ecstatic. - Sir Alex Muppetson

I just think that one more good quality signing, regardless of price - as long as they do the job, wherever on the pitch, would complete our squad, particularly with Hargreaves due back. Having an international player is just the cherry on top.

Hmmm a world class striker that would walk into every team in the world, every team. Yeah I think he could do a job at United

Yeah, but Rooney, Owen? Aren't the same type of forwards. I can see the reason behind getting Aguero(as Owen is surely a stop gap), as he's young and the future is ahead of him, but Villa would cost 40+ and will turn 28 in December.

David Villa is in the same class as Torres, if United get him they have pretty much replaced Ronaldo's impact on the side whilst changing the team.

Last night I said if United sell Vidic they won't win the title come May, today I say that if United buy Villa they will Champions once again come May.

Ahh.

The player says he wants to stay in Spain. Our manager says we are not buying anymore.

I am keeping my cock firmly tucked in.

Its not going to happen. The press are just running out of names to link us with as just about every other top star that might be available has moved club already.

i dunno...
IF this eto ibrahimovic swap goes ahead then bacra and inter seem to be out of the running
fabiano looks likley to go to milan
juve dont have the cash do they?
byern have brought gomez
real have got benzema and dont seem to be interested anymore
we wont be buying anybody apparently
arsenal wouldnt spend that much on 1 player would they?
city have loads of strikers and are not in the cl
that leaves chelsea and liverpool
liverpool have the spanish connection plus chelsea have 2 very capable strikers in anelka and drogba...

if valencia need the cash which i thought they did... and liverpool get 30 million or more for alonso then i could see it happening... i fecking hope not... but i could see it...:nervous: i just hope they dont get silva and villa...

Would be a class player for us if this happens but just can't see it. The white Torres!!!

Isn't there's a debate on whether Gill's comment is an old one or not?

This is what the official site said:

Meanwhile, the Daily Mirror and Daily Star claim there could still be more new faces at Old Trafford this summer after picking up David Gill's quote about “player activity” while the Reds are in Asia. However, the quote comes from a pre-tour interview conducted for ManUtd.com in June. NB player activity could also include loans, departures or contracts.

Valencia are still in vast amounts of debt but the plan made by the new president was for them to keep a hold of Silva and Villa. Right now it looks like they'll do that, unless a Spanish club (Barcelona) can come up with a mega offer that Valencia simply cant refuse. They've already rejected the bids from Real Madrid so its going to take a lot of money to persuade them to part with him.

Didn't that financial injection stabilize them? I thought that really bettered their situation to a point that they do not need to sell?

Basically the president that was behind all the financial fiasco, Soriano, returned a month ago having gained 51% of the shares and linked up with a mysterious company called Inversiones Dalport, an investment company supposedly from Uruguay but with an office in Madrid. Soriano announced that none of David Villa, Juan Manuel Mata or David Silva would now need to be sold, as all the debts would be wiped clean.

However, no information on Dalport was found and neither did an office exist in Montevideo like Soriano said. Suspicions became worse when fans noticed that the logo of an eagle used by Dalport had in fact been copied from a children's colouring book  It all looks like an investment scam.

We will see what happens but before they had to sell and Soriano says everything has changed now but I don't believe him.

ah, I see.

So basically we could very well have two smokescreens at one and the same time:
1. Fergie not buying anyone.
2. Valencia not needing to sell anyone.

Not really concerned if the scouse get this one. He surely wont attempt to play some form of 4-3-3 including Gerrard, Torres and Villa, that would leave them with no width. So one of those three will have to be benched, and the overall impact will be minimal except for having more depth, obviously.

Stabalized to the extent that they dont absolutely definately need to sell at least one of Silva and Villa, as it looked at the beginning of the summer, yes.

But they are still in massive debt and if a huge offer that they'll never ever see again for David Villa came in they'd most likely sell him. But I'm talking Kaka-like money.

or maybee gerrard could play in midfield?...

i believe he has done it a few hundred times before pretty successfully

This post is idiotic on several levels. Rafa is a bender but he isn't gonna drop any of those three ever. Also I would he concerned if Liverpool signed a player of his quality.

so we buy him for a year or half, then Real come sniffing and we swap him for Benzema who will feel like a used slag, and SAF will use that to his advantage, and mould him into the BPITW, who also hates Real.............................................sigh,, we can only dream

Exactly. The Torres/Gerrard partnership is something to be concerned about.

If Rafa wants to not only break that prolific partnership up, but also break up the Alonso/Mascherano midfield partnership (although to be fair, one of them is probably going to leave anyway), to accomodate Villa, then let him do it.
Stevie Me has had one of his best seasons playing in-the-hole, in a #10 kind of position. Personally, I would be happier with seeing a Villa/Torres partnership and the scouse having to play a rigid 4-4-2 to accomodate, with Gerrard as a central midfielder, with less creative freedom, more defensive responsibility and more hollywood passes from deep.

If I were in Rafa's shoes, my focus would be building on what worked well last season - and the two best things were the Torres/Gerrard partnership, and the Mascherano/Alonso partnership. Those are his two strongest....things, if he had any sense whatsoever (and we all know that he doesnt) he would be strengthening the defence and the wings, not being hellbent on breaking the few things that really worked.

How about this scenario to wet your apetite.....
Date :5th August
Venue: Old Trafford

AS the teams walk out on to the pitch Every one is looking for VIlla in Valencias team, then when they can't see him they think he is on the bench. But then he emerges in a United shirt and the crowd goes wild.

OR else : Villa does play for Valencia plays an absoulute blinder, scores a Hatrick. The Crowd chant ,Fergie Sign him Up!!! and The boss is so impressed with him that as he did with ronaldo he makes sure villa never goes back to spain.

It'd just mean Gerrard out on the wing instead of Riera probably, which still improves the team greatly, regardless of whether he likes playing there or not.

Liverpool also have the players to play a diamond in midfield with Gerrard just behind the strikers, Mascherano as the anchor (someone will put a W in front of that), Riera and Kuyt playing from inside, where they tended to end up anyway. And then Liverpool have very adventurous fullbacks now in Johnson/Arebeloa/Aurellio so they can get their extra width from there.

Better yet: Comes out with a Valencia kit on, almost the end of the match, scoreline tied Villa gets a pass in his own half, turns to fire the ball in his own net; own goal! The crowd is shocked until he pulls off his Valencia kit in celebration with the crowd only to find there's a United kit underneath with Villa, 20 on the back!! He runs over to give Papa Fergie a big hug. "Welcome to the family."

You mean like:

-----Villa--------Torres-----
---------Gerrard-----------
-----Kuyt-------Riera------
----------Masch-----------

Too offensive IMO. Riera is a wide man also, he'll be a headless chicken in the center. Not to mention their midfield overran when meeting more physical sides who'll put 4-5-1.

With their fullbacks overlapping they'll be even more prone to conceding on counters.
