David Moyes Unemployed | European Champion

Lyon have zero pedrigree.
The club established itself as the premiere club in France defeating Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain and also became France's richest club. Lyon became known for developing promising talent who went on to achieve greatness not only in France, but also abroad and internationally. Notable examples include Michael Essien, Florent Malouda, Sidney Govou, Juninho, Cris, Eric Abidal, Mahamadou Diarra, Patrick Müller and Karim Benzema. Lyon won its first ever Ligue 1 championship in 2002, starting a national record-breaking streak of seven successive titles. During that run the club also won one Coupe de France title, its first Coupe de la Ligue title and a record six Trophée des Champions. The club also performed well in UEFA competitions, reaching as far as the quarter-finals on three occasions and the semi-finals in 2010 in the UEFA Champions League.

In their entire history? thats European pedigree?

What a brilliant job he's done at WH. Just goes to show that choice of club is crucial.

That's a nice bit of history, but Lyon this season are an upper mid-table club in France.

Would be sweet irony that he'll probably start next season in the Champions League and the club who threw him out a decade ago for not being good enough (justifiably) will start the season out of Europe.

Still a way to go?

It is funny that this West Ham side run themselves into the ground for Moyes in the same way his old Everton side did and yet he could not get a tune out of the players in his time at Utd. I can only put it down to the players he has now are more up to the physical challenge and that goes for the skilful ones like Bowen as well.

No one expected him to beat Sevilla or away at Lyon tonight after a home draw. Moyes has always been in his element in nothing to lose see what happens situations.

Not taking it away from him he has still done fantastic but now with Barca out he is managing a team fancied/expected to win a piece of silverware for the first time since he was United manager, will be interesting to see how he handles that this time round.

The guys has had so much shite over the years, was a laughing stock after his united stint and the butt of jokes. He’s actually a really good manager. Just wasn’t the right man for united.. but still a good manager. Rooting for the hammers to win the europa as they are a decent team without the massive budgets. Doing a great job there

Both players and manager needed time to adjust to eachother and that time was not given to him.

Right. Firstly West Ham aren’t a club that are expected to compete for top honours. The fact they are is testament to the job he’s done. If I remember correctly that massive support were fighting each other in the stands when he took over. Secondly, “I hope he gets the chance at a big club again” - the again here means a big club like Manchester United. He isn’t suited to a job of that type. And a big club of that type are expected to challenge for CLs and league titles. And you don’t do that playing reactive counter attacking football. It’s very simple.
West Ham fans fighting in the stands is an argument for what? Manchester United has the most terrible group of fans who take up every chance to trash our own players, managers, staff and owners. The club is incredibly divided. Not sure if this is the criteria of how big a club is.

Doing a great job. But let's not forget that both Fulham and Middlesbrough got to the final of this competition while both were nowhere near the top of the PL.

West Ham are doing alright and have had a good run, Lyon aren't great. Frankfurt will be a tougher test. But you'd have to say they are one of the better sides remaining and have a decent chance of winning it. And should rightly be expected to at least make the final.

For Moyes it would be great to see him finally win something.

Sometimes I wonder about an alternative history where Moyes stays and we buy peak Toni Kroos. Would we be overall better off, given that we haven’t had a midfield controller of close to that ability in the following 8 years.

Moyes was good at picking players, just he had Woodward as his chief executive in his first year in the job. It was a mistake to have both of them come on at once.

Happy for him, hope they win it. Never really got some of the venom a small minority aimed at him. The job here was just far too big for him, simply a bloke out of his depth.

I think it would be a great thing for the Hammers and Moyes to get a spot in the Champs League and just see how they do but if they do there will be no way we are getting Rice.

Moyes inherited Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra, Michael Carrick, Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney amd Robin Van Persie.
And completing the team were Smalling, Evans, Jones, Rafael &Fabio, Buttner, Cleverley, Anderson, Nani, Valencia, Chicharito, Kagawa whomever I'm forgetting.

Every single ome on the first group was on the wane physically, while Valencia aside, every single one ok the second group was massively lacking in quality.

That meant Moyes had to play the older guys because the others werent good enough, and ended up 7th.

Anywho dont think Moyes was/is good enough at the top level, but he was surely set up to fail here.

I don't get these sort of points, for them clubs you claim he has them working hard, we aren't the only club he couldn't get a tune out of.

Fair play to him if he wins it, but let's not pretend he's a top top manager now

Worth noting Moyes chose not to use Zaha though, who was given to him.

I think it would be a great thing for the Hammers and Moyes to get a spot in the Champs League and just see how they do but if they do there will be no way we are getting Rice.

Rice is a good player but we should be looking elsewhere anyway, the money West Ham are looking for him, he just isn't worth it. Nearly all £100m+ players have been a failure, I'm not convinced £150m or whatever Rice would cost would be able to handle that pressure at the pressure cooker of United which has a dysfunctional side and one bad game can you see you get slated. Rice doesn't have that pressure at West Ham.

He is a good Premier league manager and there is no doubt about that.
Ancellotti did not hang around for too long in the Premier league so I would have Moyes in front in that regard but Carlo is now doing a good job in Spain which would be beyond Moyes so different strokes for different folks I say!

That’s the second time you’ve come wading into the middle of a debate and totally misconstrued what I’ve put and started making totally irrelevant points. Yes, yesterday I was totally saying we should judge Declan Rice on his goals in a post that specifically said the goal was irrelevant. That’s obviously what I was saying. Now here you’re banging on about our fans. We’re totally irrelevant to this debate. If you want to shit on all things Manchester United and state we’re not a big club you can do that in one of the other hundreds of threads on here. You’ll find lots of people willing to help you to that end. It’s very hip at the moment. This debate was very simple - David Moyes’ reactive, counter attacking style is not equipped to manage and succeed at a club that wants to win leagues and CLs. I’m not hugely convinced his management style is equipped to manage big players either. If you want to disagree with that point and declare he’s ready to manage City or Liverpool when Pep/Klopp leave then go ahead. Personally I think you’re off your rocker. West Ham is a great job for him and he’s doing brilliantly. I’m happy for him as some of the nonsense he got thrown at him was out of order. The club he inherited was built around one man and not fit for purpose structurally to support him. It doesn’t mean I want him back here.

Who cares seriously, he's been here and terribly failed. He's playing underdog one-dimensional football with a team at his level. Let's wish him well but he was never good enough for leading club of our format and brand of football anyway. There is a bit of irony there mind.

Genuinely think he’s a far better manager for his failure at United. Looks to have regrouped and added to what he did at Everton. Still don’t think he will ever be a top manager capable of handling a big club but he’s one of the best at taking a mid table club and overachieving. Really needs a trophy sooner or later though.

I agree he was never good enough for the job, but its telling that we haven't been able to get it right ever since.

Hell of an understatement. 6th in the league. Semi Final of a European competition. They're having a fabulous season. Not like its a one season fluke either.

Agreed. A club the size or West Ham is probably a really good fit for him, and that's no disrespect to either Moyes or West Ham.

Really happy for him tbh. Has been a figure of ridicule for years.

Read a recent interview with him about what he do differently if he got a chance to manage United again.

While he may do a better job now it still doesn't take away the fact he made such a mess of it first time.

Would you want to give him the chance though?

They did sack him originally.

Got a bit lucky they rehired him

He was brought in on a short term contract, much like Rangnick, fulfilled the contract and left on schedule.

He was tasked with keeping the club up, which he did.

He was almost universally unwanted by the West Ham support who wanted someone sexier, who played "the West Ham way". There was something like 95% opposition to the original appointment.

Six months later, when his contract expired, 50% of the West Ham support had warmed to him and were with him; the team had been top 8 on form over a spell of six months with Arnautovic converted to a CF.

The major shareholder at the club let him go though; he had listened to the voices wanting sexy football and brought in Pellegrini, gave him record funds for the club, but he took West Ham back into the bottom three within eighteen months having signed flops like Sebastien Haller (he's just Brian Deane) and Felipe Anderson and a guy who was the worst goalkeeper I have ever seen in my life, Roberto.

Repeat the cycle when Pellegrini was sacked, though Moyes was more accepted by a bigger chunk of the support second time around and who believed he should never have gone in the first place. He sacked off the shirkers and sulkers and brought in a team that runs all day and rarely gives up.

Can you please clarify what was the point of this part of your post then? (Which I addressed. And also, btw, I am not saying Moyes is good enough for a top club, or that West Ham are a top club, either.)
If I remember correctly that massive support were fighting each other in the stands when he took over.

As for Rice, can you please clarify what in West Ham's game vs Lyon made you comment this? You, yourself said it wasn't his performance. You also claim it wasn't his goal. Was it purely the occasion that he participated in a game?
(And I also rate Rice quite highly, just find the comment strange, and your reasoning even stranger)
At this point do you rate Declan Rice is a litmus test to see if anyone knows feck all about football.

If I misconstrue what you meant, I'm sorry, I don't mean to offend you. I am directly addressing your posts and am not making any effort to add emotion or opinion.
