i think Van Der Sar was quite young when he won his first Champions League trophy.

VDS was a few years older. Playing for Manchester United carries a lot more pressure than Ajax in all fairness. Changing goalkeepers s always a risky time for a football club, and introducing a young keeper magnifies that.

Hopefully he handles the pressure a blossoms.

I'm excited.

We rarely give very young keepers a chance in our first team. But we've done our homework and paid a hefty price for him. It's gonna be interesting watching him grow into the successor we hope he will be. I just hope people won't be too hard on him when the inevitable mistakes happen. We shouldn't expect him to be the finished article for some time.

'David De Gea made 150 saves in the Spanish top-flight in 2010-11, only Almería's Diego Alves made more (157).'

This will be his biggest challenge. He wont need to make half as many saves as he has with atletico. Concentration will be key. If he can handle being untested for long periods he will make it because his talent is not in question

That is why its so hard for a young keeper at a club like United. The expectations are far higher here than most clubs. If a goalkeeper makes a few mistakes it can cost you a few points and the chances of winning trophies.

So yes he can make rookie mistakes but if they cost us goals and games it could be a rocky ride.

Great news this is getting done early, De Gea looks real quality. I haven't seen enough of him to read how he handles crosses and organises the defence.

Hopefully Fergie's right about the composure and organizational skills. That's the two problems we had post-Schmikes and pre-VDS; Barthez, Howard, Caroll, Bosnich and friends.

It's great that we have a rock solid and (mostly) experienced back four, especially at centre back. That should help make life easier for the kid.

Its a shame we didn't get VDS the first time SAF tried in 1999.

He's 20 and he already got some great moves.

When he'll reach 30, he may be at the level of Edwin. He's at the right club that is playing in all competitions, every single year and it should help him great deal in getting some priceless experience.

He'll be fine.

Pretty exciting that we've signed one of the most talented keepers in the world. I wish him the best of luck. Seems as if we've spent a lot of time watching him so I trust SAF and the coaches.

"Seriously, Man Utd fans, you have no idea what a good deal you are getting here. He's easily as good as any top keeper in the world now, and he's only bound to get better.

He's managed to save Atlético's bacon again and again, and they have a dismal defense. pair him with United's defenders and you'll see"

"Didn't read whole thread, only first few posts, but it looks like a lot of manchester united supporters don't know much about this kid yet so I'll clarify a bit..

He's a very talented goalkeeper with very good aerial and ball handling skills, very athletic and very smart, makes some crazy saves and isn't bad at saving penalties.

I saw his debut last year and in his debut game he basically won atleti their match. Then he pretty much became their undisputed first choice even after their other first choice recovered from an injury, he went on to pretty much save their season last year - they had a terrible year defensively so he was pretty much a one man defense, one of those keepers worth lots of points in the league at the end of the season, and for me, he was one of the main reasons they won the Europa league last year and he saved a penalty and had a solid match against inter in the European super cup. He pretty much saved their season last year. This year Manchester united showed a lot of interest in him and he went up and down in form throughout the year but that could be down to athletico having a notoriously inconsistent defense that could keep a world class attack force at bay for 60 minutes, then let in 3 goals out of nowhere.

But de gee has lots of quality and is one of the most impressive goalkeepers in la liga. We have a lot of great keepers but he's in the top 5 in la liga and he's only what, 20? I'm sure you guys will be very happy with this kid at the end of next season. It'll be interesting to see how he copes with being at one of the biggest clubs in the world"

he is the most talented keeper at his age level.

sir alex and the staffs job now is to turn him into the best keeper around.

Should be playing against England in the under 21 championships i think?? Good chance for people to have more of a look at him.

Looks like Athletico supporters consider David as their saviour and if he really has such great handling ability combined with cool mind, then Sir Alex just signed a legend in the epic making in vein of Casillas from Real Madrid's golden years.

One is for sure... he made some huge steps in a very short period of time. His presence in Manchester United can propably speed up that process, even more.

TBH, i have not seen him at all before, so what about his distribution and kicking skills .... those are the traits that define a Man Utd keeper

Still a slight risk IMO. Making multiple saves throughout a match behind a poor defence, is a little from doing nothing for an hour, then having that full concentration when being called upon to make that one big save.

But if the boss is willing to take the punt, he must be pretty special. So here's hoping.

One of the best young players in the world this guy is, really excited about this signing.

I think the fact that he's been on our radar for so long, and that we are getting an immediate downgrade (fact is, he is not as good as vds) means not as many people are 'up' for this transfer.

However in terms of size and importance....we just smashed the british transfer record for a keeper and getting one of the most highest rated young keepers on the planet.

Big signing, even if a little muted right now.

SAF obviously saw my fantasy draft team.

I'm excited about this signing. Yes, it's "one for the future," but I have faith that De Gea will slot into our team very quickly.

so does that pretty much sum him up then?

It's going to be a nightmare listening to people like J. Redknapp try to pronounce de Gchchehahchehcheeeaaa

Fantastic signing, can't wait to see him in action. Swift work by the club too.

As people are still wondering what kind of keeper he is, I'll start with the word safe - the Spanish coaches describe him as "more German than Spanish" - he doesn't make bizarre decisions and he's unlikely to make a spectacular error.

More critically, he soon gets over those "he'll be disappointed he didn't do better" moments. His confidence and concentration doesn't fall apart for the rest of the match or month. His performances in big games and in front of big crowds have been very good, even when his teammates haven't been. He's decent in possession, Atletico trust him with backpasses and he usually gets it to his own player.

Obviously the defenders will need time to get used to him and vice versa and he'll get overanalysed to death when he gets here. That's where his temperament comes into play and from the outside looking in, and reading the Spanish papers, he sounds like a perfect match for us. In the end I reckon that's what settled it to SAF and I'd always trust his judgment on a player's character.

Anyway, as you can see, I'm biassed and delighted we got him.
Best young keeper I've seen since Casillas.

Got that quote from another forum.

The deal is done and dusted. There's no chance that Fergie would've been talking like this, if there wasn't even an approach by us.

He doesn't have a single Spanish cap (only under 17 etc) - isn't this a bit early for him to be at Man Utd as first choice?
