David de Gea signs | Confirmed

He's going to have a load of help from Vidic and Rio with their leadership and communication at the back and he's got a composure about him that will stand him in good stead from the off, so I'd like to think there won't be that many mistakes (even with it being his first season in a new country), but it's inevitable there will be a few. I just hope that when there is a few or if he hits a rocky patch that fans are going to show a bit of patience, loads of people jumped at the chance to rip into Foster when he made a couple of mistakes and it tore apart his confidence.

Look at the length of his fingers in this photo. Im taking this as a good sign for us. Gloves must be specially made for him. You know what they say with people with long fingers.................? I'll leave the space for your comments for that :D

No wonder his girl follows him wherever he goes.

Looks good, at least from what little I saw of him from the U21s. I just hope he doesn't get overawed by the task at hand.

I hope too that all of us supporters don't turn too much of the spotlight on him, and be a little forgiving of the initial mistakes, and remember that even an experienced GK like VDS did make the odd blunder..

Not a fan of young keepers but in SAF I trust. (although he has had GK misfires in the past).

Love the transfer activity thus far. Three young players added and not for crazy fees.

One of the new players is inly young by name.

I wonder if the defense will adapt to his style of play (by that I mean I noticed he likes to stay deep on his line and not charge down through balls or out at players) or he will be more aggressive. I lean towards the latter but it will be interesting to watch the first few games

Im pretty excited about this, I wanted Neuer first but considering he didnt want to leave Germany De Gea wasnt far behind. Think he could be a stellar addition.

Exactly. He has got a good defensive options ahead of him on the pitch and that's a bonus. People here have been realistic about his chances, and realize he won't be as effective as VDS at the onset. But yeah, when the time comes, people would do well to have confidence in him to succeed.

I like that he always appears so cool and calm, shows a lot of composure. His reflexes are very good and he is as leany but tall similar to VDS. In a couple of years he will be one of the top keepers, no doubt. A risky, but brilliant signing imo

I don't think they'll have to adapt that much, if at all. Like you mentioned the only real difference between VDS and De Geas goalkeeping style is that VDS is slightly more aggressive when he comes for crosses. Once De Gea gets settled in fully I expect him to improve. I think that's why we've gone for him, hopefully there won't be so much of a settling in period as our defence is used to working with goalkeepers of his ilk.

I'm confident about this signing, I've seen a good 15 games of De Gea and he's so calm and confident about everything he does. Obviously we've never seen him play for a massive club but he's played in some big games like the U-21 final and the UEFA Cup final so he's got as much experience as someone his age can have.

DDG is and will prove to be a much better signing than Manuel Neuer, whom most people on here were impressed with after an admittedly stellar performance against us in the 1st leg.. However in the 2nd leg.. He IMO was to blame for 2 of the goals they conceded.. iirc right after that game against us in the 1st leg Schalke lost their league game before the 2nd leg and he was to blame for a goal or two in that game as well.. That doesn't make him a bad keeper but I think DDG will be very less prone to mistakes and hype following great performances.. I believe DDG is more level headed and wont let the hype and stuff affect him as much..

I don't think Neuer was our 1st choice nor were we his.. Although had we been interested I am quite certain he would have changed his 'I don't want to leave Germany' stance.. I think DDG was our 1st choice all along and that we have been following him since 2 seasons..

At what point did you think we were not interested in signing Neuer?

Play our cards right with this kid and we've got a top keeper for the next 15-20 years.

He's a fecking tremendous keeper and will be the best in the world shortly. In fact, he's right up there now and he's 20 years old.

feck, it's raining. Has he signed yet? DON'T LET HIM SEE.

Are you not concerned that Real Madrid or Barca will try and lure him back to Spain in the future?

Edwin said a LONG time ago that his replacement was already decided.

Thanks Sharky7.. Also have you read any of the Neuer/VDS/SAF interview's? I have been following the lot since what feels like forever now.. I am not going to repost them because I have nothing to prove to you.. Also I have been following this transfer since a very long time..

That's a risk with any top player we have who isn't English (and some who are English) If that's the price of success, then so be it.

Only found out yesterday that De Gea's sister has been living in England for a while now. Which is encouraging.

Al this talk about experience. But he has already won more than most goalkeepers have won in entire careers. Adjusting to the premier league may be tough but he is a proven winner and winners tend to succeed more often than not.

True, I just thought 15-20 years is probably a bit optimistic.

Hope I'm wrong though.

Interesting.

Translated from his twitter, probably horribly wrong.

"Invited by the MAU to know the Club, the city with my family and make an offer ...."

his twitter currently says

Invitado por el MAU para conocer el Club, la ciudad junto a mi familia y presentarme una oferta....

i think it means "I was invited by man utd to look at the club and the city with my family and for them to make an offer"

Tw David de Gea: "Have been invited by Manchester United to see the club and the city with my family and to be given an offer. "#MUFC [@manutdstuff]

To me that doesn't sound like we are as close to getting him as many thought.

It sounds like we have had our bid accepted, which we know, had a medical, which is a formality if the player is open to a move and now we are having to show him a few reasons to come here as he clearly hasn't made his mind up just yet.

Or that he has to pretend that nothing is going on until Friday when he changes agent, which is what we all knew anyway.

Wouldn't agree with that at all.

We've had a bid accepted, he's had a medical and he's bringing his family with him while he completes the necessary paper-work ("offer") so they can see where he'll be living in the very near future.

It's a done deal.

I think we're stalling for time until the agent thing blows over.

Eh?

Why would a player do a medical if he doesn't want to move?
After the fee is agreed with the clubs, then personal terms are trashed out, medical is the last step. We're close to signing him.

Am I the only one imagining his agent watching the TV going "Ah it's just speculation about him going to United.".........."Oh Ferguson said they're signing him? Probably got his names mixed up"...."Oh he's havng a medical? Ah never mind David said on his twitter it was just to show him round...all is well."

Hehe.

"Wait! Who's that guy behind the sheets?! I think I recognise him! Goddamit, they're up to something. I knew it!"

Yep. It's all play because of the agent/legal stuff. It's done. You don't do a medical while you think of an offer.

Have to say that if the sheets were meant to hide De Gea so he won't be seen for all the legal purposes, it was done in a pretty silly way. Oh well.
