The 2007 ones weren't remotely the same as the other 4.....considering we'd bought Hargreaves so Masch would be pointless, already Ronaldo and bought Nani so Ribery would be useless and Torres....well I don't remember having a proper Tevez/Berba-esque "saga" for him.

We clearly tried for Villa for in 2010 when SAF said "we tried to buy someone in the summer and put in a offer, but he wanted to stay in his home country" when addressing the Rooney leaving thread...that sounds more like they went for Villa than say Ozil, but properly both.

Mascherano transferred to West Ham in 2006, he was a Liverpool player by the time we signed Hargreaves.

I'll let you guess which one I never desired.

Never wanted mascherano or ribery but yes to the rest!

Like he said.. Mascherano.. Its just that I have been following him since his Corinthians days and thought he was the perfect DM.. Also as time has showed he is not half bad going forward either.. Anyway that's all in the past..

I should add Suarez to that list as well actually.. I hate the fact that most players I want somehow or the other land up at fecking Liverpool.. The club I despise the most! Its like someone out there is trying to teach me a lesson for being a Muppet if you will..

You said they weren't remotely the same but they really are aren't they?

Hargreaves/Mascherano - CM/DM
Nani/Ribery - RW/LW
Tevez/Torres - CF/SS

Please do not tell me (with hindsight) that we would have been better off with the signings we made rather than the ones suggested.. Ribery's injuries aside I don't see why we would be worse off?

De Gea would be a great signing. He's young, however, I don't consider him as a long term replacement for Van der Sar. I can see him wanting to play for Barcelona in a couple of seasons. It's almost like every Spanish player's dream.

In which case we'll cash in double what we've paid for him and then sign the next best young keeper....or alternatively Neuer

But in all seriousness I think thats unlikely. Valdes is still pretty young for a keeper so has some years ahead of him, and when he does retire I'm pretty sure they'd just opt for a promising Catalan keeper from their academy and persevere with him till he turns out alright, just as they did with Valdes.

As for Real Madrid, you'd think he'd never end up there due to his huge Athletico loyalties but that's most irrelevant these days. Though in any case Casillas is also young so I don't expect Madrid to be in for a keeper for quite a while - and even if they were they'd probably just end up signing 7 midfielders.

Just like Reina eh! :smirk:

The amount of skepticism and cynicism on the board now a days is amazing. Its like you don't want De Gea to stay for great many years. Not you personally, just a shot in the dark at everyone who's a skeptic.

Who has already played for Barcelona? And indeed was a Barcelona product

So his love for that club should be lesser than De Gea who was the product of another club?. I'm sorry, i don't understand your post. Kindly clarify.

If anything Reina's position is just like Fabregas. A youth product who's now become one of the better players in his position. Why wouldn't they want him back or why wouldn't he want to go back?

De Gea is a similiar case to Torres. Atletico born and bred. He probably wont want to play for Barcelona and there is no chance of him wanting to go to Real.

Erm.....I wasn't talking about positions.

Considering how early in the off-seasons we got the first 3 and had clear intentions of getting Tevez.....you randomly believe there was strong interest in those others as well. Just no. Unlike Dinho/Essien/Benzema we were never the clear favourites to get them yet alone declared a big interest in them(Ozil here but never favourites to get him)

Especially as yes, they would be fighting with the other new signings for positions in the team....Rooney isn't getting dropped, Ronaldo isn't getting dropped, Mashcerano is just another CM in a world of a CM's back then.

Ah I mis-understood you then. I know we were not as interested in them as I would have liked us to be.. That was the point of my post.. Finally we are getting a player I have always wanted.. Its a one of a kind thing for me is all I am saying..

Atletico fans have Barca as their second team. De Gea reportedly supported Barcelona in the final.

That could be more down to the fact that they hate Real rather than like Barcelona.. After all the enemies' enemy is always a friend!

He's doing quite well in the u21 tournament. I find it odd we hear nothing from City, Real, Arsenal and Spurs wanting to sign him too. Bit worried other clubs are going to table a bid for him. We should have signed him before he went off to the u21.

De Gea will sign for us, I would'nt worry about that, he'll progress here, he would know that, see us getting six or seven seasons out of him before he takes the number one jersey for both Barcelona and Spain.

I am surprised Arsenal have not tabled a bid for De Gea but City have a very promising English goalkeeper on their hands and Real have Casillas who can still play for ages.

City & Madrid don't need him, Arsenal's PIG has done decent for them and Spurs probably couldn't entice him away from Athletico.

I'm certain he will sign for us on 1st July, that's when he is meant to change agents to Mendes with whom the deal has been arranged and he has always said he would make a decision after the U21-tournament. Unless he drops a bombshell and says he is staying in Madrid, he'll be our number 1.

It seems as if le Arse are putting their confidence in Szczzxzszzxny.

From what I've seen of him, I think he's a little overrated. He's got a big frame, but I think he's more prone to mistakes than the other two clowns.

He had another quiet match against Ukraine. A couple easy saves, a few catches. Something that has stood out in this tournament that wasn't so obvious when he played for Atletico is that he is actually quite good at that midrange pass out to the flanks just inside his own half. He hasn't been kicking it long much but he has used that pass a fair amount with good success.

The penalty he conceded was weird. First of all it was a terrible back pass by Javi Martinez but if De Gea had reacted to it a bit quicker he probably would have gotten there before the Ukrainian striker. As it happened I'm not sure whether it should have been a penalty even though most of the time you will see them given. The striker tried to go around De Gea but only got a weak touch on the ball then in my opinion ran into De Gea rather than De Gea bringing him down. But as usually happens in these situations the ref gave the penalty which De Gea calmly saved.

It's funny how originally we were hearing he wasn't sure and now he's sounding more and more confident about the move. I think it's probably done and dusted. A reason to support Spain under21s...finally :)

Forlan already told us that "he's moving over with his girlfirend etc"....

obviously it's done. The reasons for it not being announced yet has been well documented in this thread.

Does anyone seriously think SAF would be so stupid as to let this lad go to the Championships and increase his reputation without having a deal in place?

Ordinarily, I would say no. But, this is the Caf...
