David De Gea (SAF confirmed signing!)

Had a brilliant game tonight. Looked comfortable in every way possible, made 3 great saves, a penalty save and caught every single cross that came his way. The positives definetly outweigh the negatives with him, you couldnt ask for anything more from a goalkeeper of 20 years of age.

Cristiano Ronaldo has urged Manchester United to sign Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David De Gea – even though he looks like a sausage.

Sir Alex Ferguson, seeking a long-term replacement for Edwin Van Der Sar, has watched De Gea and the Real Madrid striker said: "He is awesome, very good, a big guy who looks like a sausage but is a great goalkeeper.
"I think [Real’s] Iker Casillas is the best but De Gea is exceptional."

De Gea, 20, has won seven Under-21 caps for Spain but Ronaldo, whose goal against Atletico last night secured Real’s place in the Copa Del Rey semi-finals where they will meet Sevilla, said: "He is good enough to play for the national side. He was spectacular when we played them."

I wasn't that impressed with him against Liverpool last season, but any time I've seen him this season he's looked the part. At his age of course he'll make a few mistakes but at the prices being quoted, we could have a keeper for more than a decade.

No he hasn't.

The thing is, that goes for all the young goalkeepers people like to mention. They could all in theory be with us for a decade, but will they be good enough to come in the door and perform right away? And if not, can they bounce back and make sure they're solid in their second season? And so on. There have been many good young goalkeepers who havent become as good as they might have done.

They're all billed as the next buffon, but those keepers are very rare.

Yeah, that's fair, but to my mind it's infinitely preferable to doing what we did with VDS - picking a good, experienced keeper from elsewhere in the league - as there just aren't any keepers of that standard floating about. Arguably the best keepers that might be available to us are Gordon, Jaaskelainen, Sorensen, Begovic, Howard, Schwarzer, Foster, Hennessy or Green, and IMHO, none of those are good enough.

That means we either look outside the country where, I'm sure there are lots of good goalies, but will they settle? Are they suited to the English game? It's a bit of a lottery in some ways, but I'd prefer to see a 20 year old keeper struggle to settle than a 32/33 year old, as at least you have time on their side to turn things around.

Honestly VDS looked inconsistant and arguably not good enough at Fulham. I'm not sure any of those are good enough, but some experienced goalkeepers perhaps not from the premier league, should be

Given that he he had scant protection playing for a mid to bottom of the league team it's hardly surprising he didn't look great but it's hardly the point.VDS was already a national and ECL winning goalie.

What??? That comment was so silly I had to respond, for the first time in weeks and on a shitty connection in a Nepalese guesthouse.

Van der Sar was neither inconsistent nor "not good enough" at Fulham, he simply wasn't fashionable. Unlike many other such keepers though he'd already played at the highest level, and so wasn't likely to be another Foster (mentally unsuitable for top level football).

Whether De Gea, Neuer et al. will be a good move for us is entirely another matter, but Van der Sar wasn't a piece of blind good luck, he was an experienced top quality keeper who just happened to be playing for a smaller club.

Nah he made plenty of mistakes at Fulham. He'd proven himself at the top level before of course, but that doesnt mean he was playing as well as he has been at United. He'd have good games and bad games at Fulham whereas at United, since his first season, he's rarely had a bad game at all.

Manchester United offered 25m for Atletico's David De Gea. Atletico turned it down. #laliga

Neuer! We want Neuer. We're going to have some fantastic Ozil-esque threads this summer :D

I've been more impressed with him on the occasions I've watched him then I have Neuer who I've seen less of. I seriously doubt anyone has watched enough of any of them to make a particularly valuable judgement though.

Only having a 1:44 video on youtube is however a bad sign, even Bébé had longer than that...

He has many longer videos on youtube, just decided on this one since it's good quality and shows some spectacular saves. Obviously, there's plenty more to see on youtube.

Now now, compilations don't mean much. You can pretty much Friedel into god for the matches he's played against us.

Anyhow, I"ve watched a few Ath.Madrid games live and De Gea usually isn't at fault for the goals they lose, he mostly does pretty well and at first I was surprised he was 20, as he has far more composure and concentration, he was similar to Casillas when he stepped up on the big stage imo.

Would be great if we went for him, I think SAF knows how important a GK is now, Barthez, Carrol, Howard were comical if you compare their performances against VDS the Dutch legend.

I think you'd be surprised.

I have watched Neuer fourteen times for Schalke and seven times for Germany since the World Cup and while I'm no goalkeeping expert here are some thoughts.

The short version is that he is excellent. He ticks all the required boxes and would be a perfect fit for United and for the Premier League. He is already one of the very best goalkeepers in the world and at 24 still has room for improvement.

The slightly longer version is this. He has no real weaknesses and many strengths. His shot stopping is very good, as are his reflexes and close range saves. He may not always be orthodox (as seen in for example this video) but he is effective. He actually reminds me a lot of Dominik Hasek, the ice hockey goaltender, if you're familiar with hockey. He isn't quite as good as De Gea when it comes to shot stopping and reflexes but it's close. (I posted some thoughts on De Gea here if you're interested)

Where he really sets himself apart from De Gea is in the air. He comes off his line often and deals with crosses well. Of course the nature of aerial duels is such that no one will win every single one, and no one is perfect, but Neuer is very good in the air and wins the clear majority.

His distribution both kicking and throwing is good. His throwing distribution especially is excellent. Throwing the ball from his area into the opposition's half with accuracy is no problem for him. He seems confident and calm with the ball at his feet and his kicking is consistent.

Some other positives: he is Schalke's captain which speaks to his leadership qualities, he has almost 200 matches experience including CL and World Cup matches, his communication with his defenders seems good (though of course it can be hard to tell while watching matches on TV), he commands his area well and is off his line quickly to deal with through balls, he seems like a bit of a nutter like all great goalkeepers are and he's German so he is a born winner. Ok the last couple may be a bit tongue-in-cheek.

In sum if we are still looking for a new goalkeeper, and if we really are willing to pay something approaching the €20m figure which has been mentioned in connection with De Gea then Neuer should absolutely be our number one target.

I have watched De Gea eleven times this season and while I'm no goalkeeping expert here are some thoughts.

His shot stopping is very good, probably already on par or just slightly below the best in the world. His reflexes and close range saves, as well as his one-on-ones are likewise very good. Mentally he seems very mature and is always very calm and composed, which for someone who just turned 20 is very impressive. He seems to communicate well with his defenders though it can sometimes be hard to judge this just based on what we see on television.

That's the good, the bad is that he suffers from Shay Given Syndrome i.e. he gets stuck on his line and doesn't come out to claim enough high balls and crosses. Resultantly it's hard to tell how good he is in the air. I have never seen him outright flap at a cross but he only comes to claim balls that are safe and 100% his so you shouldn't expect him to ever have any difficulty with them. Of course he is very young and will improve, but right now I would feel a little bit nervous about facing a team like Sjoke or Blackburn with him in goal, though in his defense very few goalkeepers end up looking good against those teams due to the sheer volume of high balls flying into the area while a swarm of brutes charges at you making your life hell.

His kicking is nothing special, but not poor by any means. His positioning seems good.

So should United try to buy him? Well the two things he has going for him are 1. he is already world class at a few things (namely shot stopping) and 2. he is very, very young, and if he keeps progressing he will undoubtedly be the best goalkeeper in the world in the future. He isn't perfect but neither are any of the other possible targets. If he were to sign there would inevitably be a period of growing pains as he became accustomed to a more physical and direct league and improved his aerial ability, but if we make it past that then our goalkeeping situation could be sorted for a long time.

Neuer and Adler have both been mentioned a lot in this thread and a lot of fans would like to see one of the two become the new United #1 next year. I've written at length about both in previous posts so I won't go over it all again but I compiled these statistics from their Bundesliga matches this season and collected them all into a handy little table.

I also made these composite images showing all their loose ball wins from this season:

Adler

Neuer despite having played one match more and faced 17 more shots on target has conceded two goals fewer and made 19 more saves with a save percentage of 73.7% compared to Adler's 65.8%. Adler has conceded a goal every 2,93 shots on target whereas Neuer has conceded a goal every 3,81 shots on target.

Neuer has made 12 more catches and three more punches for a total catches+punches/match of 2,91 compared to Adler's 2,33. He also catches a higher proportion of the crosses he faces (catch/punch ratios 2,05 vs 1,72). He has no dropped catches whereas Adler has one.

Adler has 9 more loose ball wins which as we can see from the above images tend to be around his own penalty area while Neuer is more expansive in his play.

Neuer has significantly more completed and attempted short passes at 426/446 or on average 19,4/20,3 per match compared to Adler's 11,9/13,2 per match. Neuer's short pass completion rate, despite attempting 60% more short passes than Adler, is 95,5% compared to Adler's 90,3%. Adler has completed 20 more long passes but has also attempted 90 more than Neuer. Neuer's long pass completion rate is 37,5% to Adler's 34,3%. The short pass/long pass ratios show a clear attitude difference between the two, Neuer favouring short passes and Adler favouring long passes.

So far this season Neuer has outperformed Adler in every category but one (loose ball wins). You can make of these numbers what you will but for me they have only reinforced what I already knew: Neuer is better.

He keeps notes of all of the games he's watched.
