All the best Dave. Even though the time is right, I’m sad to see you go. Lots of great memories :)

I’d be interested to hear how posters criticising the club for “handling his departure badly” would have liked it to be done. Not that we really know how it was handled anyway.

Pretty damn easy. It was clear to everyone his time here is at an end. Don't offer him a new contract at all and make it clear to him and to everyone else he is not staying months before his contract expires. That way everyone else knows when his last game at Old Trafford is and we can give him a proper goodbye with a standing ovation and all that. You can be both ruthless and competent. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Surprised with the negative shit he gets on this forum, even Phil fecking Jones got much better farewell here (Yeah, I know, injuries…).
United Legend, farewell DDG and thank you for everything!

Sane members of this forum, who are the overwhelming majority, wished all the best to Jones.

Good luck to him but ultimately the only right decision. I hope we get Onana in quickly and move on from more deadwood.

If he was better with his feet, commanding the area etc I think De Gea would have retired at United. But of course it's a big IF.

At his peak there was few better shot stoppers in the game, in 2018 for example United finished 2nd in the table because of his many match winning performances and without him would have finished out of the top 4.

Best for both this departure is made now. Best of luck to David and great servant for the club.

It's a pity it ended in such strange circumstances but it's still the correct decision and time to move on.

I wonder if the André Onana username is free...

Never will be a club legend for me. Length of tenure isn't the sole equation for me if it is then people better start putting Jesse Lingard on their lists of club legends given he joined our youth club in 2000 and only has 2 less cup wins than DDG had and wasn't single handily the reason why we lost cups like DDG.

I didn't see people saying this about Jesse Lingard who was with us for 20 years between youth and senior.
Your comparing Jesse Lingard to De Gea? Have a day off mate.

Unreal keeper in his time here. From a shot stopping perspective there were seasons where he probably gained us several places in the table with some unbelievable saves from certain goal situations.

a lot was made of his ball playing - however i am surprised he didn't stay on a bit longer as I thought we’d prioritise a deeper midfielder, possibly a right back and a striker before signing a goalkeeper

No. He had a contract for months that he refused to sign holding out for more. He played this poorly we were just ruthless instead of giving in. This is what people wanted from our board. If this was Harry Maguire or Fred no one would be saying it was handled poorly.
The best thing would have been not to have offered him that contract, which I think was down to indecisiveness from the powers on high, our esteemed owners, we could have then planned better and given him a good send off. Also we should not have signed either Maguire or Fred in the first place, that was down to Woodward need to stick it to City who were linked with both, when actually it ended up City sticking it to us instead.

Had he gone then it would've been different but we live in the world where he stayed

i don’t. in my world he left and he’s been played by an actor ever since. like joe biden.

No. Ruthless would have been correctly deciding he wasn't good enough any more and not offering him any contract.

We were indecisive, only getting to the right outcome of him leaving in spite of offering him more than one contract.

It's a particularly stupid fan who wants De Gea out but is also so reflexively anti-De Gea that they defend the club repeatedly offering him new contracts.

If you like De Gea, you should be unhappy with how the club handled this. And if you wanted De Gea gone, you should also be unhappy with how the club handled this.

I love Dave. He's in my books a legend. Hopefully he will get a testimonial. He deserves it.

My favourite United player in the post-Ferguson era. His form between 2013 and 2018 was incredibly high and had a genuine claim to being the best ‘keeper in the world across that time-span.

Thanks for the memories, Dave, and best wishes for the future.

Shame his goodbye was handled that way, he deserved better. Probably time to part ways, but a great servant to the club, saving our bacon time and time again and doesn't even get an OT farewell

Thank you Dave, all the best for your future I was there at Wembley for your first competitive game v City. Weird to think 12 years has gone by so fast.

About time.
Still it'll get some getting used to not seeing him between the posts every week.

Legend. Shame how it has come to an end.

He also had this knack of highlighting why we sadly have some of the worst fans in the sport. A man of many talents indeed

Sad day. He was extremely likeable as a player and for the immediate years post SAF he was our saving grace.

He’s still got a few years in him and I think he’s better than a reserve keeper so he should go to somewhere like Brighton

Can't imagine a worse fit (well slight hyperbole) considering the way they play. He needs a side that doesn't rely on his passing or sweeping

Good wishes to him but long past due.

The problem with fanboys is they don't know their fanboys.

crazy to think they’ve all died now. shows how long ago it was united last won the league.
I dunno, saw baldy in the middle just a year ago and he was as healthy as a peak Arnold Schweinsteiger.
