David de Gea has left Manchester United

Superb goalkeeper and a true club legend in my eyes.

Thanks for the memories Dave,

Also love the fact he calls Sir Alex 'My dear Sir Alex',
The respect that man commands from his old players is amazing to see.

No it didn't. Make the decision a few weeks or months ago and let old Trafford give him a proper send off in his last home game.
De Gea has spent the last half a decade constantly struggling in pressure situations. There's a fair chance that if we'd told him he was no longer wanted he would have fallen apart at the end of the season and potentially cost us top four or the FA Cup final (he arguably did the latter anyway). None of us know exactly what happened and what decisions were made when, but unfortunately I do think the club and team as a whole were best off with De Gea thinking we still wanted him until after the season ended.

We all on this CAF wanted this to happen. It has happened. Make everybody rest.

Thanks David, all things being considered at least a club icon, and probably even a club legend.

One of the most spectacular goalkeepers of the last 10 years. Shame it's ended this way. Hope that he still gets a nice send-off at a latter stage.

Will always remember him for that match against Wengers Arsenal where he kept everything out. He would actually still do well for a bottom half team facing a lot of shots without the pressure to build from the back. Like with Leno at Fulham.

Wish him the best. Works out well for all parties involved as we need a more rounded keeper to compete.

Bit weird how it ended, I think Erik done a full u-turn after the FA Cup final - then still keeping de Gea on call if we couldn’t get a new keeper. Could have been handled better but the right outcome nonetheless

United have handled this very poorly

Can’t always have the fairytale ending in business unfortunately. We probably didn’t realise Onana would be available this summer.

We paid him as if he was the best keeper in the world for 5 years when it was clear he was no where near.

He leveraged us when we were desperate and he wanted to go Madrid. It’s how it goes

So Shaw now becomes longest-serving player in current squad, having arrived back in June 2014. Martial second as he came on transfer deadline day in summer of 2015.

He had a period in which he was one of the best keepers in the world, true servant of the club and might be regarded as a legend.
Wish him all the best.

Testimonial stuff needs to stop.

Replacing him is years overdue, but he deserves gratitude and respect for such a long service to the club, as well as being influencial in us winning a number of trophies. All the best Dave

Good luck dave. A legend of the club and an amazing servent. Never gave the club a bad name and has kept an exemplary attitude throughout.

I remember his first match for us vividly, the Community Shield v. City.

He made a couple of howlers, but also made some world class saves. There was potential.

Sorry that it had to come to this. First time in a long time that I am actually emotional that a player is leaving.

Legend.

Agree with everyone questioning the way club handled this.

All the best to him, legend in my eyes.

Legend. Deserved more medals in his career and I hope he achieves more in his next venture

Great servant. Thanks and goodbye. Once upon a time a world class keeper (2014-2017) amazing keeper on his line.

2023 he hasn't improved enough on his weaknesses to fit into how ten Hag wants to play to warrant a big new contract. We move on.

Our 3rd best keeper behind van der Sar and Schmeichel in the last 30 years for me.

The right decision. He just simply did not improve the other (non-shot stopping) areas of his game in 12 years and his shot stopping got progressively worse after 2018. If he made the effort to improve the command of his box and his sweeping, he would have retired here easily. I wish him all the best for the rest of his career but I don't think he is a top level goalkeeper anymore. He hasn't been since 2018.

Brilliant goalkeeper overall, at his best even better than van der Sar in my opinion and one of the world’s best. The last seasons have coloured people’s memory of him understandably but there was a time where it looked impossible to get past him in some games. If he’d left in 2017 he might have been considered one of our greatest ever players.

Despite the fact that he’s simply out of his depth in what a modern day keeper needs to do, he was one of our best, if not our best, player through our barren years. As much as he needed to replaced a year or two ago, he has still been fantastic for us overall for a huge period of time.

Great career at United. Had some truly world-class moments over the years. I will remember his time at the club fondly overall.

I find this very sad. Our last link to the successful teams of the past has left.

A great player who was forced to play in numerous terrible United teams. Maybe it was time to move on but United have handled this in an utterly classless manner. If he signed a contract pulling it afterwards is a disgrace

3 years maketh the career
The reality is it’s been since 2018. It’s overdue, and Fergie would have got rid a long time ago. Just because someone keeps turning up for work and taking home a salary doesn’t mean they need a testimonial.

I don’t really care anyway, if he would have been given one I wouldn’t have seen the point and now that he hasn’t I can see why people think he deserves one.

Never will be a club legend for me. Length of tenure isn't the sole equation for me if it is then people better start putting Jesse Lingard on their lists of club legends given he joined our youth club in 2000 and only has 2 less cup wins than DDG had and wasn't single handily the reason why we lost cups like DDG.

I didn't see people saying this about Jesse Lingard who was with us for 20 years between youth and senior.
Because he was a bang average squad player.

Oh I wanted him gone for ages but just didn’t like what happened in the last month with so much speculation

But thats how things always happen with United. Has nothing to do with what the club does, we just have a lot of press based on who we are. These things happen at every club, but for this, due to us usually being a player friendly club and of course our size, the media always seems to take a harsher line when we do things like this. Similar to Welbeck in 2014, where we heard how we lost our identity because we sold him. Our fans should understand this by now imo.

When the papers say "United have notice player a" or "United are planning a bid for player A". Every club takes thier time and plans the funds to do so. I highly doubt it's simply just a stream of United leaks. We just make good headlines and us not having too much of a transfer story is in itself a headline.

Sad that his best years we were terrible and he deserved better for those and also a send off at old Trafford.

Thanks for the memories!

Should have been treated a lot better , great servant to the club , all the best Dave

So unfortuante that a player of his talent only ever won 1 title. If he signed a decade earlier he would have left with rooms full of trophies
