David De Gea Appreciation Thread

Who could have seen this coming? A lot of us, a lot.

I hate to say I told you so

But we wanted our own Claudio Bravo.

Whatever Onana’s frailties, De Gea had to go. You’d have to be utterly brain dead to think otherwise. He hasn’t got a club ffs.

Doesn't change the fact that neither of them are of the required standard
Point is that we managed to downgrade De Gea and we spent 50 million for that pleasure.
We needed new gk but it was not alarming issue. It could have wait one more year.

He was out of contract. The contract that was ultimately pulled was for far longer than one year. So that's not a realistic scenario.

Onana in half of season made more mistakes than De Gea did in years.
You might want to rewatch this then to refresh your memory then. Mind you this skips the disaster class against Sevilla

At least with Onana you know he will pass the ball out under pressure 10/10. The problem is that his GK level is of League Two GK sadly.

Why are we talking about De Gea? The guy has been a free agent for like half a year and still doesn't have a club. That should tell us everything about where he's at.

Onana may be the next Barthez rather than the next Schmeichel but that doesn't mean we should've stuck with De Gea. It just means we might've done better going after a different replacement.

We absolutely could not have waited. He was a liability and was getting worse. He could still pull off the odd worldie which seemed to convince people he still had it when he was one of the worst in the league.

Bizarrely, given the howlers in the CL Onana is statiscally one of the best keepers in the PL.

We could have triggered the 1 year in his existing contract, we could have gone with the actual free upgrade available which was to promote Kovar who is twice the keeper Onana is, we could have done a lot of things other than blow 50M on acquiring some new Cameroonian deadwood who is going to be warming the bench for the bulk of his contract. I just wish AFCON began tomorrow and ran until 2028.

Agreed. De Gea was a known entity and it was clear he wasn't good enough anymore.

Better to replace a player like that and risk potential failure than carry on with a player not good enough.

"We could have done a lot of other things" is the argument I've been making. Somehow people keep bringing up DDG as if he was the only alternative.

I was glad to be rid of him by the end. But in typical post-Ferguson-United fashion, of course we sign a replacement who is so useless he makes us long to have De Gea back

We should have triggered the extension and spent the money on a CB if we had a finite budget.

The team in charge of our transfers have made one signing that has improved the team in 5 years. Bruno.

There was zero chance they would get the right goalie, especially as every one of ten hags chosen men has been utterly hopeless. All of them.

De Gea had issues, but hes better than Onana. And he was ALWAYS going to be better than anything our management team could dredge up.

Who cares, let's it go, jesus. Degea was not the standard that club needed, He's still jobless for a reason.

De Gea isn’t better than Onana at all. People have nostalgia goggles on and are blatantly forgetting his errors from the last 3/4 seasons at United. He was great in his time but now isn’t able to find a club.

No he's definitely not better than Onana. Need I remind you DDG doesn't have a club.

So weird to see this thread bumped just to spite our current keeper. De Gea is a legend for United, a good guy and in our all time top ten appearances. But he had to go. We just bought the wrong replacement it seems.

Would be interested to know if fans longed for Van Der Sar to come out of retirement in De Gea's first season at United.

Exactly.

A lot of ‘I told you so’s’ about a goalkeeper who is without a club

Pining for the guy who got the club knocked out of europe several times and cost loads of big matches with huge feckups doesn't make any sense.

He's gone, it was the right decision, get over it.

I’m glad to see most people still wouldn’t want David back, panicking and offering him a contract due to fan sentiment isn’t beyond our current board.

I loved De Gea, but his shot stopping had been on the decline, and without shot stopping skills, he isn't as valuable.

Onana being shite doesn't mean that De Gea shouldn't have been released

Even if one stands by the decision to get rid of De Gea, the manner in which we did so was disgraceful. We reap what we sow.

Hear hear.

I see they've taken the option to double down on being wrong.

I'm personally looking forward to seeing which one breaks first and launches an Elon Musk style tirade anytime someone tells them De Get was great.

"Go feck yourself"

Why do people keep saying the fact DDG is without a club means he's finished? Maybe it means he's taking a break after being over a decade at United? Unless you've heard something I haven't?

One person says something in here and everyone parrots it without thinking, over and over. One thing doesn't mean the other, you've just made it that way to fit the agenda your on....

My 2 cents, DDGs replacement should have been phased in, we should have extended DDG for a year. Now we are stuck with a keeper that the manager won't bench because....... and that we may potentially have to upgrade on anyway..... Kneejerk cafe must be getting conflicted (no chance they're remorseless)

Most of the posts here focus on the obvious truth known of DDG's level, signing De Gea now doesn't solve any issue, it just creates another problem and puts a target on Onana's future with the club.

The problem was refusing to renew De Gea when he had already a contract presented on lower wages, while also signing only Onana as first team quality goalkeeper, the competition between both of them could elevate their level, nevermind that now Onana could leave for AFCON in the middle of the season.

Onana's presence would mean De Gea may actually start working hard on his problems with the ball.
De Gea's skill as a better shot stopper than Onana creates a competition in training that pushes Onana to become better in the conventional aspects of the GK game, he's already great with the ball.

Instead, what the club does is take away a contract from a legend, and leave a GK with clear personality issues (as seen with Ajax) as the only option for the spot, he can make a lot more of mistakes before he's benched by a 37 y/o Heaton that has played close to nothing in the last 2 seasons.

Everyone knows about De Gea's highs and lows, nothing new to discuss there, the problem is with the club letting him leave to trust the 50M signing that even some Inter fans where saying wasn't "that great". Now signing DDG should be out of the question, is not the answer to the problem created this summer, making that U turn is only aggravating the problem.
