David De Gea Appreciation Thread

Awesome! Finally get to see him making high flying Hollywood saves again!

Supposed to have his medical done today. Happy for him if it goes through, very nice city to live in.

€3m a year to live in Florence is a pretty sweet outcome.

Will be interesting to see how rusty he is having been out of football for a year.

Will be keeping an eye on fiorentina results this season. I know he needed to go, but shame we got Onana and not mamadashvalli or mignon.

€2m fixed plus up to €1m in add-ons from what I read, increasing to 3+1 in the second year if Fiorentina pull the option.

If anything we can learn about this is that the players we had or had were making 5-10x their worth. DDG, Martial, Varane etc...Now we still have to get Casemiro, Rashford and likes off the books.

De Gea saves TWO penalties as his new team beat Milan 2-1!
Think he made another very good save as well.

It's been a crazy week for penalties. Paul Gazzaniga saved 3 from 3 different players in a game as well.

Some lovely words from Deano, he had the best seat watching the amazing keeper David was.

No doubt peak De Gea was something else and he's easily our third best keeper ever. Spanish ninja Jesus rescued us many times .

Another one I'm glad to see doing well! Many many arguments with the usual suspects on here about him, DDG stay pissing on their chips... Great keeper

It was the right move to get rid, he was one of the highest earners in the world. Love the guy but you've also got to be better with your feet in this day and age, especially under this manager.

Was one of the highest earners in the world, and after he saved our @rses season after season when the rest of squad played like dog vomit he fully deserved it. Dave accepted an offer of substantially lower wages that summer but the club withdrew its offer that Dave accepted.

Onana had a good run of form the first three months of the season but was diabolical for most of last season and his run of good form has hit a speed bump of late. However well Dave has been playing of late is no longer relevant as there's no going back, but no one would argue that Onana will ever reach Dave's peak.

But here we are and we have to make the best of it. Whoever does long term planning for the club should be thinking about a new keeper in a few years.

And we let him go for free!!!
Overpaid, scared of controlling the box and not a very good passer. In the end he wasn't at a level that would have justified a new contract anymore. Still was terrible how it actually unfolded with the withdrawn contract proposal, but stays the right decision.

If going for Onana was the right decision stays another question however.

Yeah I don't think letting De Gea go was ever the wrong decision. Who we replace him with is still up in the air however. Onana scares me.

And not a peep ever since about passing from the GK department because it's very popular opinion that Onana is some kind of great passer while in reality he is very hit and miss whenever he is put under pressure or needs to go long. Onana in contrast looks much more comfortable with the ball at his feet that is for sure.

Having a decent season at Fiorentina for sure. Ranked 18th in Europe in the shot stopping stats, which is better form that he managed for us for a while. Granted, a huge amount of that comes from saving 2 pens in 1 game, which was a bit of an outlier, but its still nice to see him having an indian summer.

It wasn't even just the ball at feet jssue.
Loved DaveSaves especially during the peak years. But he always haf moments of costing us big games and those liabilities became even more so prevalent from 2018 onwards. That plus a few other factors and he had to go

Him getting that last contract was insane given it was given at a time when his level was on a downward trajectory (much like that last Rooney contract showed the incompetence of those running the situation). The amount given to him on top of that at a time when most top teams had sorted their gk situation out so Utd weren't in a desperate state either

Anyway glad he's doing well (from what I last saw)
