GET THE feck IN YOU BEAUTIFUL BASTARD!

Utterly deserved, pretty much the brightest light in a dim season. It's just such a hilarious contrast to this:

Well deserved. He's done more overall and been more consistent than Rooney or Januzaj, who are other 2 players who have impressed.

I voted for Rooney for the POTY award. But then I changed my mind, but couldn't change my vote. So I created 5 fake accounts and voted 5 times for DDG! :D So happy for him! He is my favourite current Manchester United player!

Thoroughly deserved. I think some people forget just how ugly his attempted media assassination was at one point. I've seen nothing like it, particularly when you consider his age.

The narrative was written before he pulled on his gloves, and he's done a tremendous job in his three years here. Best in the game right now, for me.

My favourite United player at the moment, bar none. Sorry, Mata...

Brilliant. Always thought he had a good chance of at least one of the awards but he was consistently world class this year, hugely deserving of both. Next campaign - Captain Dave!

Delighted for him. Really hope we can hang onto him as well. GIVE HIM A NEW CONTRACT! Also, had a few laughs at that newspaper clipping. How times have changed...

Is it just me that thinks he looks way too shy and introverted to be considered captain material? I know he's done it before for Spain U21's but he was the oldest one there and captaining United is a whole different kettle of fish.

I agree. He's too young to be captain at the moment. He doesn't look very confident with his English either. Let him just grow as a 'keeper first. Maybe in 5 or 6 years.

He's not captain material, pure and simple. A world class 'keeper, but not a leader. It's strange he keeps getting mooted as a future captain by some.

He's still got another 15 years at this club. By the age of 30, if we can keep hold of him, he'll probably be one of our longest serving and most important players. Been really impressed by him, clearly been putting the work in in the gym yet has managed to retain his agility and reactions.

It's funny that the reputation you develop in the first 6-8 weeks of your career in the PL sticks with you. My Liverpool supporting friends still refer to him as 'flappy hands' etc. Can't believe he wasn't in PFA team of the year.

In fairness, it's founded on him being U21 and U18 captain in a team with some impressive players.

I'll give him that, he did appear more vocal with Spain though. He doesn't give our defenders enough of a bollocking, let alone lead the team.

I think he is giving more of a bollocking in the past season, as well he should be. There's also the case that we have no other real potential captains. Carrick doesn't say a word, Van Persie and Rooney aren't exactly the most loyal of players and who knows how long they'll be with us for, Evra is leaving. After that who else is there? Young? Cleverley? Mata who just joined in January?

For me it's either Jones, Rooney or de Gea

I agree one hundred percent, although with van Gaal on the scence van Persie will surely have a chance...

True. But Van Persie will be 31. Jones isn't really nailed on to make it as a week in, week out player and Rooney burned a lot of bridges with his past actions, and who knows how he'll fit into Van Gaal's era. de Gea, rightly or wrongly, is nailed on to start the next two seasons and if we sign him up to a new long term deal, hopefully a few mores years after that.

Fingers crossed.

Even Ogden, just last January, was in on the wanton De Gea bashing

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...de-Gea-with-Iker-Casillas-on-their-radar.html
Sir Alex Ferguson has become exasperated by De Gea’s inability to iron out the flaws in his game and senior players at the club are understood to have lost faith in the 22-year-old even before his costly injury-time mistake against Tottenham on Sunday which led to the home side claiming a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane.

Initial United hopes that De Gea would emulate Chelsea’s Petr Cech by adjusting to the rigours of the Premier League at a young age have been replaced by a sense that he lacks the qualities required to succeed in this country.

While Ferguson and United's goalkeeping coach, Eric Steele, remain convinced of De Gea’s potential to become one of the world’s best, there is now a belief that his lack of progress during his 18 months at the club, in terms of dealing with crosses, in particular, has left the Spain Under-21 international more likely to thrive in a less physical environment than the Premier League.

I think he struggled to assert his opinion and stuff when he had Vidic and Rio in front of him. When it was Jones, Evans or a younger guy I saw him get vocal and get stuck into them.

I've been massively impressed with De Gea since De One and he fully deserves this honor. His blips were incredibly overhyped by the hyperventilating British media who had the long knives out for him since he signed for us.

As for the future, there's no question in my mind he will eventually be regarded as one if the greatest keepers ever to play the game. Maybe The One. Fingers crossed he remains a United but it's hard to resist the lure of Spanish football.

The worst criticism I think he received was when he used his leg to block a very difficult shot, I don't remember which game that was exactly but I remember pundits saying something like " A top keeper wouldn't to use his legs to stop that". That was one the dumbest piece of punditry I have ever heard up until now.
People get paid to say stuff like that... Unbelievable when you think about it.

Won the BBC save of the season poll for his one against Suarez. Personally I think his save from Giaccherini was better.
Mata in the FA Cup or are we talking league only?

Delighted he won both awards, well deserved.

Edit: That save was last season come to think of it, Christ all these years are rolling into one - I'm aging fast!

I agree, it was quite disgusting. On top of talent, he's shown great mental resilience. Fantastic player, and seems like an all round really nice guy.

I think he also likes it here, when the media was hassling him the support of the fans never wavered, I think he was grateful for that.

Anyone who watched La Liga knew he was quality, but as the English media thinks the PL is miles better than anything else in the wolrd (they thought this even more 2-3 years ago when DDG was adapting to the PL), they couldn't stop criticizing a foreign young players. Quite funny and ironic if you actually think about it, that the English media out of all ppl criticized him when England hasn't delivered a top keeper for eternity now. Sour grapes and all.

Anyway, can't wait for LvG to work with him on being more involved in the game. What an education he has had so far with only 23. Already world class talent while with Atletico, then just takes one year to adapt to the PL, get even better in his 2nd year, and now doesn't have any problems with crosses either. High quality keeper with great education and he seems to be a quick learner!

Well deserved. He's one of the very best keepers already. Hopefully his Spanish girlfriend cant lure him back to Spain in the next 10 years or so

To be fair they didn't say it was because the league was better at all. Look at most the criticism of him it was the fact he needs to be stronger as it's more physical. You can argue it all you want but it's no coincidence that Fergie has mentioned how they put him on strength training, Steele emphasized it in an interview he did after he left and De Gea has got obviously bigger. Since then he's been far more confident with crosses and it is an obvious improvement in his game. It was quite a valid point they made. Despite the criticism he constantly gets on here for no reason to I'd argue Hart is quite close to being a "top goalkeeper" he was very good when City won the league and has been pretty solid this season since he came back. Funny how we're all so adamant the media hates de Gea and is unfair on him yet do the same thing to Hart nearly every week.

Glad de Gea won both awards, shows how far he has come, wouldn't swap him for any keeper at the moment myself.

It's also confidence too though. He was so young when he moved, he couldn't speak the language and being in a vulnerable position like a GK you need to dominate. It's no surprise that since he has developed as a player and a man, he has leaped forward in development terms. You can see how much more settled he is on the pitch too, he isn't scared to shout at Vidic / Evra if they mess up, where as before he wouldn't bat an eyelid.

I agree mate, I think I said similar a couple pages back, the guy looked terrified when he first joined. It would be unsettling. 3 of that back 4 are arguably 3 of the best players we've ever had in that position so for a 19(I think he was 19?) year old to be behind them he probably didn't have the confidence to criticize or slag them off for mistakes. Once he did settle a lot of the errors were gone, it comes with age to an extent but it also comes with proving himself in performances. I think in fairness to most United fans, and it seems like everyone at the club, they always had faith in him. You could see his potential from the start it was whether he could make the jump in league, it's difficult in any position. I'd imagine it's very hard as a young goalkeeper.

Team of the Year last year and now our POTY for this. Probably deserves to get Team of the Year again this year but given our poor performances in contrast to other teams, it'll probably be Cech.

That was the save against Real, though I can't recall who took the shot. It was point blank and would have beaten any other keeper on the planet.

There was definitely room for criticism in the early days. The Dzeko shot from distance, but it was one that took a wicked dip. The flap v Blackburn. But they were mistakes you would expect any young keeper to make and we're far outweighed by sensational saves and nearly perfect distribution. Under intense pressure on and off the pitch. Captain material in the making.

All the while, De Gea has been dealing patchwork back lines which have been putting in substandard performances since his arrival.

Yes it was that game indeed! Just need to remember the name of whoever criticized that save.
