Was actually thinking about this guy yesterday and the fact that he won't be getting any kind of gold gloves for a bit of time now and I was thinking about Edwin's record of not conceding a goal for 1,311 minutes. That season ( 2008-09 when it ended ) our defence consisted of Vidić and Rio in the CB ( both played most matches there ), Jonny Evans was slowly introduced into game ( 16 games total ), O'Shea played around 20 matches ( 10 as sub ), Neville and Rafael played square 16 matches both in the league and of course Evra was rocking the left right back position. In the mid it was Fletcher and Carrick with most games, followed up by Ando and Scholesy.
It was 5-6 years ago. Our best defender is probably still Vidić, our main partnership this season seems to be Vidić - Evans one, Evra is still playing nearly 100% games and Rafael ( due to his injuries ) plays as many games as he did back in that season. Our midfield is Scholesy-less and thankfully Andoless now. Carrick and Fletcher are still there but Fletcher just came back from horrible injury and he's probably our best midfielder hands down right now.
Of course, we've added Chris, Phil and ehm, yea, here's the problem I think, we've added Alex on the left-back and nobody as a true RB. Meanwhile, all of those players have aged by odd 5-6 years, and while Vidić still seems very sharp, you can't say same about Rio, Evra is tiring too fast ( just too many games for him, it's something obvious and nothing wrong done by him ), Carrick's developed into a great passer but he isn't the most mobile one. We've lost our best midfielder of Scholes, Fletcher had to adapt his role and both Jones and Smalling seem to be injury prone, add Rafael to that.
Not sure if I made my point visible enough, but is it somewhat fair to say that we've failed our defence upgrading/transition ? That includes some holding/defensive midfielders. How can David think of beating some records/getting golden gloves when we're nearly standing in the same place for 5-6 years now ?
It did strike me yesterday when I thought about it.
