There's still time for De Gea to make an impression.

Could be added motivation for him to have another great season with us.

He definitely was, he was 23 at that time and I remember actively advocating him being put on the field instead of Green or James, as he was coming off the back of a great season at Birmingham. But he indeed didn't get a sniff at the #1 position.

I shall rephrase my answer: He was, but didn't play a game

Oh ok then, yep. I remember him being called up to the squad after his season with Birmingham when he'd been named in the PFA team of the year, I think, and was really hoping Capello would have the guts to drop the senior GKs and give him his shot, it was obvious he was better. But that was not to be.

That was Hart close to being in his element, but we opted for the 40 year old intstead. Great work England as per usual.

We actually played two GKs didn't we? Green in the opening game (blunder against the US), then Calamity James for the following games. Or am I confusing this with another tournament?

That was the whole point. He shouldve played Hart from the start, but he didnt and it was just about forgivable. But then when Green cocked up and James got the nod ahead of him, it was maddening. And it wasnt about being wise after the fact either, I remember being livid about it as soon as it was announced. Inexplicable.

Yep, that's how I remember it as well! I'd actually been cocky with my mates for weeks before the WC, cos the French always take the piss out of English GKs, I was 'look guys, we finally have a really good one, you'll see'. Egg on my face!

I was really hoping he'd be played, I remember being flabbergasted at the time. Aaaah England and its goalkeepers!

Maybe it's good they keep Big Dave out of the Spanish squad for as long as possible, I would much rather face Casillas or Valdes in goal than him, I really do rate him that high. If he does make it then I see him cementing his spot for the next decade. It's a win-win really.

Casillas isn't even playing at the moment though. But Spain seem to pick their squad on reputation not form.

In fairness Valdes is in great form for both Spain and Barcelona, plus he has the experience, so it would be a bold move dropping him.

Sign him up on a long contract similar to Nani's please. Great goalies are so hard to find. And we have an absolute gem on our hands.

Obviously he's still going to make the odd mistake, what's important is that they're becoming less and less frequent.

He's probably in shock with how little he has had to this season compared to his first 2 seasons

Big error for the goal, poor judgement. Otherwise a good performance.

His reaction post the goal showed his frustration at himself.

Yeah, I think concentration was the issue. He was clearly trying to hard to make "amends" for giving away an uncessary corner (between him and Rio) and tried to punch a un-gettable ball. Meh. We won. First mistake in quite a while too, iirc.

Nothing to see here.

It was quite easy at the back and Rio switched off a few times - it happens when you are ahead in control with a big game on the weekend. De Gea punch was just a bad error - there is nothing else to say. He won't be doing that in the Derby as he will be more focused.

He's definitely been a lot less busy under Moyes. Something he's probably not used to, his concentration will have to improve.

The "mistake" was thinking that Rio had the situation under control initially. The corner was headed before it reached him - you can't punch (or flap at) a ball that isn't there. Maybe he shouldn't have come for the ball, although it's hard to see what difference staying on his line would have made. I'm more concerned with why the Leverkusen player was given a free run to the ball.

Good point mate. Still early days and City will test him, but we do look more solid at the back. I thought that Vidic let his concentration lapse once or twice against the Germans, as did Rio. Might have been something to do with them having one eye more fixed on Smalling than anything else though. Rio tends to be a bit more cautious when Smalling is in at right back. Anyway, I think De Gea should be cut some slack for the goals last night. We all know what he can do.

He has hasn't he.

But, I really am not sure if this is fully down to Moyes. There has definitely been a change of approach in defending: I see we are more aggressive and more pressing than under Fergie, which is what I like from defending. But I also believe the teams we have played haven't taken such an attacking approach as from previous seasons. Whether this is because of Moyes' setup or for other reasons, I don't know.

Whatever the reason, de Gea must adapt to being used to long periods of little action, and pop up for the vital saves, much like that lob against Palace when the man was one on one. He will get used to this, and our defensive record will be solid I reckon this season. Out of the 4 goals I reckon Dave could have made more of it out of only 1 of the goals (the last one), so many positives to be taken out of our defensive start this season.

It will take some getting used to if he is less under pressure this season but needs to be 100% at the few occasions he is getting tested. Neuer for example had a lot of trouble with this after joining Bayern after being under consistent fire from the opposition while playing for Schalke to getting only one or two shots on goal par game took him a good season of getting used to. So I guess we will probably see a few more situations where he will look a bit shaky.
