He's not the best keeper in Europe yet, definitely not. However, he is the best shot stopper around IMO.

As others have said, it's amazing that we can say that it's only a matter of time before he will be the best in his position. To be able to say something like that about a 22 year old is remarkable.

I would say he is not far from being the best. From the GK I can think of I probably only rate Neuer higher atm, but I think DDG is the most talented.

I don't think he will ever be as good as Schmeicel, but if everthing goes well for him the next years he might be regarded as the second best ever, that is how talented he is.

The saves from Mata and the one he flicks to the post against Real is insane. There has been GK playing their whole career in the PL without making saves like that.

I think there's every possibility of him becoming better and more successful than Schmikes.

Maybe, but the bare minimum would be him matching Schmikes' longevity with us. Call me pessimistic, but I don't think he'll stick around with us for a decade or more.

It will be very interesting to see how much more he can develop. At 22, I really don't think his shot stopping can improve any further, it is that good. His distribution is also up there as the best in the world.

I remember seeing one or two posters here and in the newbs complaining about how he doesn't have the frame of Schmikes. While that is of course true, he will never have that frame, because Schmeichel was naturally a big build, and through all the bulking in the world de Gea couldn't effectively get to his size without losing some key traits. His lightning quick reflexes are dependent on his light frame, and he would lose a part of his agility if he bulks up too much. I think his build now is perfect for him, as it is an improvement on what it previously was, and it has shown that he is now more capable of commanding his box during crosses and corners.

I've said this from the very start we signed him: It was one of the most exciting transfers we've had in many years for me, because I saw quite alot of his Atletico games and I thought then that he was going to be great. I was so disgusted to see a couple of fans on this forum turn so sour against him, but I couldn't be happier for the bloke to silence his critics and get into the team of the year. I really hope our team makes this club feel like family to him, so that he never feels the need to leave, because I am 99% certain he will be in the top 3 goalies by the time he's 25, if he isn't already scraping that group.

Not saying he'll never leave but he clearly feels the love at Utd, he got an extra loud cheer when he was lifting the trophy and you saw a smile creep onto his face, he looked so proud!

The fans really got behind him this year when he was receiving undue criticism and it did him the world of good.

There were a couple as is always the case, but on the whole, this forum has been one of the few places where De Gea wasn't just seen as a laughing stock, but one of the best young players in the world.

Pretty much everyone was behind him, there was only Kietotheworld I remember seeing constantly picking out every flaw, and in the newbs a guy called KingofKings did the same. Ironically enough they both disappeared when he hit some fine form, and both banned I assume. The media were the worst by a country mile, and the pundits weren't far behind. Still in for Begovic and Reina I wonder?

Funnily enough the pundits still haven't moved on. A good save is still almost always followed by "but we know that's what he's good at" before mentioning his "vulnerability from crosses". Maybe after making the team of the year they'll stop the same old bullshit in every game.

Pretty sure I saw an interview a few weeks ago where his English has considerably improved.

It will be interesting to see how De Gea and Courtois match up in the next few years. The 2 best young keepers in Europe for me, and both will be at the top for years.

Courtois might settle in the premiership a little quicker as he's a fair bit bigger then Dave.

I reckon Dave will have the better career!

Cech is still number one there like.

Courtois might save us from Barca. If they are replacing Valdez where better to look than in your own league at a guy who doesn't even make his side's first team. Surely much rather go for him than De Gea who would cost waaaay more.

One problem. Chelsea own him.

Then there's also Marc-Andre Ter Stegen who's attracting a lot of interest. He's been rumoured with a move to Barca, mind you so is Reina so who knows!

He is awful with his feet, could never be relied upon with the ball like valdes.

He's much more of a penalty box keeper like Cech, rather than somebody like vorm or valdes who are good with the ball.

He's a dead ringer for Robin Thicke

New video of entire 12-13 campaign. Some of these can barely be classed as saves, "top 75" is stretching it. 30 down to 1 is pretty special though.

Yeah the top 75-50 are quite standard, the 1st few are pretty much passbacks theyre that soft! Also don't want to slate him but didn't Liverpool score from Number 58 (the shot from Gerrard) went straight back to Sturridge didn't it? Dunno if class that as a good save.

Going to the Under-21 Euros in Israel this Summer instead of the Confederations Cup with the Seniors, along with Thiago, Isco, Muniain, Sergio Canales (who is still somehow only 22).

Bizarre how a goalkeeper of his quality has only ever been called up for the senior squad twice, but then perhaps it'd be better for him to play 90 minutes of every game for the Under-21s than it would be for him to sit on the bench behind Casillas for the entirety of the Confed Cup.

He's far too good to be playing for the under 21's. He's been the best Spanish keeper in Europe bar none, this season.

he deserves a cap or two for his country. he just had a great season whereas cassilas is rooting on the real bench, reina is reina and valdes is valdes.

Realistically though Iker will always be the national team's Golden Boy, even if he's spent the last the last few months at club level on the bench behind Lopez. One of our resident Spaniards could probably give more insight, but as I understand it Reina is very well-regarded in Spain also. Valdes is a strange one, maybe once he leaves Barca for a less prestigious side he'll not get as much of a look in. In any case on this season's form you'd think De Gea would be challenging for the first XI

Regarding a summer move to Barca
"That would be very difficult. I am very happy at United. Things are going really well, better every day. I am very happy."

Regarding Rooney:
"He looks fine to me, happy. We do not know if he will go, but we hope he stays. He is a very important player for us."
