You can also argue that he will want to remain here. Everyone is different I guess. Maybe he might want to emulate Schmikes and make a name for himself at OT rather than back home in Spain. I tell you what, it is more impressive for a player, if he goes to a foreign league and makes a name for himself, because he has to overcome bigger adversities like language, culture, physicality, style of play etc. Back home you know the league, how its played and everyone knows you. In a foreign league, you have to prove yourself more to the media and the fans.

Would be nice but I think you're dreaming. Chances are De Gea WILL want to return home at some point and with Spain being strong at the minute, well those two clubs anyway, it will probably be in a couple of seasons rather than 5+.

I hate how we lose all our players to the big clubs :(

We are a big club, trouble is, we have a lot of foreign lads in our team and they will want to go home, especially if from a big league country, like Spain. The English and British ones seem to stay long term, like Rio, Rooney, Giggs, Scholes, Beckham. Each could have moved if they wanted.

Do you want to tell him, or shall I?

Random-ish comment but yesterday I watched a recent interview with him on MUTV. At the start he answered the first 4-5 questions in Spanish as he usually does, and they were subtitled - then the last couple of questions he answered completely in English, and his Engish is really really good, I was fairly surprised!

Also apparently at the CL presser he did with SAF before the game in Madrid, he was disappointed that they didn't ask him any questions in English - so that just shows you how confident he is using it. I'm sure this will have helped him massively to feel more settled here, being able to join in the dressing room banter and comminicating with hs team mates both on and off the pitch....

Well Tevez is 29 so even if he moves to Boca right away at the end of the season, if DDG stays till hes 29 and then leaves would that be dissappointing? I dont know. I'm sure we'd be richly compensated and find a good solution, like we did with VDS. But I'm sure DDG will stay a long time

Of course that'd be disappointing. At 29 he could still have about 10 years ahead of him, and it's not unusual for a keeper to be at his peak in his thirties.

I'd love to see that interview

It was on yesterday's Countdown to Kickoff special if that helps - I don't know if its accessible anywhere online. I wasn't expecting the English part and had to rewind to make sure I wasn't imagining it!

Off twitter;

David De Gea's run of 537 mins without conceding in the PL is #mufc's longest since Edwin van der Sar's record. 1311-min shutout in 2008/09.

To put that record into perspective, de Gea would have to go the rest of the season without conceding in order to equal van der Sar. It's quite an impressive record.

I remember when that record ended. Was against Newcastle I believe. Peter Lovenkrands (sp).

VDS's record is amazing but back then Rio and Vidic were amazing and even Evans played many matches in that run.DDG deserves all the credit he's started to receive since the CL first leg vs Real Madrid.

definately should have had a few more clean sheets this season but we were a mess on the defensive side early on.

Arsenal at home and Tottenham away are two where we gave away silly sloppy goals at the end where we should have kept clean sheets.

I seem to remember that goal being a bit of a feck up in defence too.

A few games that we struggled to break down poor sides or letting them score first only for us to roar back. It was a bemusing (not at the time of course) time considering our success with Rio and Vidic and of course the VDS clean sheet streak.

our last Premership goal was conceded vs Southampton iirc, that weird goal that neither De Gea or the defender (Evans?) went for the ball and Jay Rodriguez slipped it under De Gea right off the hop.

I'm sure we had a corner at their end, and then they countered our asses off. I can't find a video on youtube (maybe I didn't look hard enough).

Anyway, will be quite something if De Gea manages to beat that. Even though it's a slim chance considering the fixtures we have coming up, I wouldn't put it past our defence and De Gea.

seems a very slim chances, he would need something like 8 of the last 9 fixtures to be clean sheets and with games v City, Arsenal, Chelsea along with Stoke, West Ham and Villa I just cant see us not conceding. Chelsea especially seem to score a few against us lately.

Id love for him to do it but Im not so confident - Id have to look up who we played during that stretch of VDS's streak to compare the fixtures but im at work so I'll have to do it later.

VDS spilled it and that ended the run..

There was also a moment a few games before that when he was beaten and the ball just went past the post.. his reaction was gif'd

and I dont think we had Rio-Vidic that much during that run... everyone got games and they all did well.

I remember that well, got a big laugh in the pub I was in.

Ah, I forgot that Southampton one.. I think it was a sloppy backpass from Carrick.. I remember him apologising for it after the game.
I went to that game, seems ages ago now and it's crazy to think that was the last PL goal we conceded!

Was it really? That does seem ages ago. We had a somewhat acrimonious debate here as to whether that goal was entirely Carrick's fault or whether De Gea shared a big chunk of the blame. Either way, it was a long time ago now and I see no one in the British media ridiculing De Gea now.

That was Carrick's mistake for me. But feck me it's been that long really?

Seems he's doing a fair few interviews whilst on International duty! Good thing is that he's coming across really well in all of them - sensible, mature, strong and level-headed. Here is one from As today:

De Gea: "Alex Ferguson is like a father to the young players"
The Manchester United goalkeeper spoke to AS from Spain's training ground Las Rozas to discuss what it's like to be called up by Vicente Del Bosque, and compared the Spain coach to Sir Alex Ferguson.

You are now in Spain's first team squad, are you happy?

Yes, it's a huge step, let's see if in the future I can be here more often.

A starter for Manchester United and now a member of the Spanish national team, not bad for a young lad like you eh?

Yes, it's thanks to God that I'm at a very big club and now by getting the call from Del Bosque I've taken another little step up.

Ferguson and Del Bosque seem similar in their paternalistic way of managing things, don't you think?

They are both great coaches and each is his own man, but the two are very paternalistic. I know Ferguson a bit more than Del Bosque, he's like a father, especially for the young players.

What has Del Bosque said to you?

Above all, he told me to enjoy myself here and train in the same way I do for my club

Would you prefer to play in the under-21 European Championships or the Confederations Cup in the summer?

The under-21s is the most important thing for me. It's a real challenge because we go into it the tournament as champions and we will try to win it again.

Will Casillas get his place back in the team when he returns from injury?

Of course, he belongs here, he is the captain and as soon as he's better and can train and play again, he'll return to the national side, I'm sure of it.

The English press have given you a lot of criticism. Why?

When people criticise you it often doesn't make much sense, but I prefer not to listen to it very much and just get on with training and playing games.

It would be strange to see Spain in the playoffs wouldn't it?

We have to beat France whichever way possible and get back to top spot, which is where Spain belongs

How have Pepe Reina and Valdés welcomed you?

I've met them before but they have received me very well. They are two magnificent guys and both are great goalkeepers.

Do you have any plans to return to Spain or are you enjoying yourself in England? You have a long contract at a huge club...

I've got three years left on my contract here and the truth is I'm very happy here, this is a great club and you only realise that when you are in it from the inside.

Let's hope the referee for Spain-France isn't Turkish..

I hope it's not the same guy! But I have gotten over that now.

Some people have said you should have stopped Modric's goal..

You'll be lucky to find any goalkeeper that could have saved that, it was very difficult.

You came out of those two games with Madrid with a much better reputation, in Spain and in England, especially because there was a time when you were questioned...

Yes, especially at the start, but I was relaxed about it and just tried to keep doing what I always do, keep training at the highest level.

Why are so many Spanish players doing so well in the Premier League?

I think Spanish football is very attractive, people in England like watching players from here, they like the fact we try to play well, to keep the ball and we have a lot of quality players.

Manchester United are a legendary team and the tie with Real Madrid was very close. Did the players feel hard done by?

Yes, I think we deserved more, we played very well and I think we should have made it into the next round, but that's what football is like.

I remember after one game (might have been Newcastle at home when Perch scored from De Gea's parry) Paul Merson was on Soccer Saturday suggesting that we get rid of De Gea and bring in the world class Shay Given in the Jan window.
He was serious, and I'm sure he said DDG would cost us the title :(
De Gea will have the last laugh when hes (hopefully) collecting he's first PL medal in a few weeks/months.

cheers lads, its been so long I had forgotten it was Carrick attempting a back pass rather than a through ball from the saints!

That's a great interview, his confidence seems to be very high now and seems very happy at the club

Home from work now so i'll update this for anyone interested:

VDS Streak (Copied from ESPN):
Nov 15 FT Manchester United 5-0 Stoke City 75,369 Premier League
Nov 22 FT Aston Villa 0-0 Manchester United 42,585 Premier League
Nov 30 FT Manchester City 0-1 Manchester United 47,320 Premier League
Dec 6 FT Manchester United 1-0 Sunderland 75,400 Premier League
Dec 13 FT Tottenham Hotspur 0-0 Manchester United 35,882 Premier League
Dec 26 FT Stoke City 0-1 Manchester United 27,500 Premier League
Dec 29 FT Manchester United 1-0 Middlesbrough 75,294 Premier League
Jan 11 FT Manchester United 3-0 Chelsea 75,455 Premier League
Jan 14 FT Manchester United 1-0 Wigan Athletic 73,917 Premier League
Jan 17 FT Bolton Wanderers 0-1 Manchester United 26,021 Premier League
Jan 27 FT West Bromwich Albion 0-5 Manchester United 26,105 Premier League
Jan 31 FT Manchester United 1-0 Everton 75,399 Premier League
Feb 8 FT West Ham United 0-1 Manchester United 34,958 Premier League
Feb 18 FT Manchester United 3-0 Fulham 75,437 Premier League
Feb 21 FT Manchester United 2-1 Blackburn Rovers 75,000 Premier League
Mar 4 FT Newcastle United 1-2 Manchester United 51,636 Premier League

So Chelsea and City (Ronaldo sent off for two reds) were the big games at the time - Villa had Brad Freidal in net and the Blackburn 2-1 win saw PIG in for VDS and Santa Cruz scored (I think it seemed a rather saveable attempt at the time of watching)

what a streak though

6th clean sheet in a row now, which is great when you consider we couldn't buy one in the first half of the season.

I'm very confident when he's in nets, it takes a sitter or a very good strike to beat him.

Pleased to see him punch the ball with authority and take a bit of a whack. All good experience. Clearly called for the ball and Vidic should have trusted him. Seems a bit of a problem with that at the moment.

Commentators desperately pointing out his weakness on crosses during the entire second half

In fairness, Merson had probably just hoovered up a gram of coke before he said that.

It's pretty hilarious

Became tired and boring long ago but they can't help themselves. Nothing else to talk about I presume.

"caught the ball a bit low" was my favorite phrase from the commentators today. fecking morons.

Excellent punch under pressure, otherwise it was a comfortable afternoon for him.
