Why? Their core is still relatively young.

Puyol, Xavi, Iker & Villa will likely have played their last big International tournament with La Furia Roja. And when they hang it up, we'll really see just how valuable they were/are. Because as much as there is a pipeline of talent yet to come, there is an elite level not all of them may reach like these legends

Players like De Gea, Mata, Muniain, Thiago, Isco, Montoya, Deulofeu, Rodrigo, Tello & Koke are all players who will get a shot at becoming the stars of the future

I think Willy has clearly been the best keeper this season from what I've seen. That's mostly basing it on watching him a lot. Haven't seen any Italian domestic games. Willy has been brilliant. Thoroughly impressed. Don't think he'll get the credit he deserves. It will probably be someone obvious like Buffon.

These whoscored ratings are pretty rubbish. According to them Andy Carroll is the 10th best performer in the PL.

I'm sorry but that's too easy to just dismiss it as rubbish... Every ranking system will have its flaws, depending on how certain aspects are weighted, but for the most part WhoScored ratings provide a decent picture of reality. Especially notable considering the broad scale on which it operates (top 5 leagues in Europe).

Earlier in the season RVP and Cazorla had alternated at #1 (both in the 7.90 range), and now they've dropped off a bit and Bale and Súarez have gone slightly ahead. Who here would disagree with that progression?

Currently for the PL:

#1 Gareth Bale, 7.94
#2 Luís Suárez, 7.90
#3 Santi Cazorla, 7.81
#4 Robin Van Persie, 7.72
#5 Marouane Fellaini, 7.63
#6 Jan Vertonghen, 7.54
#7 Chico, 7.54
#8 Steven Gerrard, 7.54
#9 Adel Taarabt, 7.46
#10 Andy Carroll, 7.44
#11 Rafael, 7.43
#12 Wayne Rooney, 7.42
#13 Christian Benteke, 7.41
#14 Leighton Baines, 7.40
#15 David Silva, 7.37
#16 Moussa Dembélé, 7.37
#17 Patrice Evra, 7.35
#18 Dimitar Berbatov, 7.34
#19 Michael Williamson, 7.34
#20 Sandro, 7.33

(The fact that there is a huge bias towards goals in the calculation method makes it quite surprising to see so many defenders in the top 20.)

And yes there are some "bizarre" inclusions (keep in mind though that Carroll has only been rated on 15 appearances so if he has a couple of low scores in a row he'll drop far faster than those around him with more apps), but no system is perfect.

From looking at the stats I can think of a couple of aspects that could have overrated his performance ratings: he comfortably leads the category Aerial duels won per game, he's 15th in Shots per game, he has a decent amount of Key passes per game, etc. etc. The only terrible thing about his performances statistically is *unsurprisingly* his Passing accuracy (59% lol)

Taraabt was also one of the stranger ones to me, but he leads the division in Dribbles per game, 4th in Key Passes per game, 5th in Shots per game, 5th in Accurate throughballs per game, 14th in Accurate crosses per game and he doesn't have a terrible Passing accuracy (81%).. all of that in the worst team in the league.

All that just to point out that you should take WhoScored ratings with a pinch of salt, but I've found it incredibly interesting and mostly useful.

Patrice Evra and David de Gea clash over choice of dressing room music

Manchester United team-mates David de Gea and Patrice Evra have gone head-to-head in the dressing room – over the choice of pre-match music.

United are on course to win their 20th Premier League title and are 12 points clear at the top of the table, but it seems things are not going that swimmingly in the dressing room.

A club’s pre-match music can be vital for getting players up for games and in the mood for battle, but according to sources close to United, goalkeeper De Gea and full-back Evra are rowing over the sound track to the Red Devils’ pre-match routine.

Evra, a huge RnB fan, took over running the pre-match music from Gary Neville when he retired, but after becoming sick of his choice of sounds, goalie De Gea has emerged as a challenger.

‘David’s asked Patrice if he’ll change the music. He’s more thrash metal than RnB,’ a source revealed.

‘He’s asked to have tracks by Slayer and Napalm Death added to the dressing room playlist.’

Slayer and Napalm Death are big acts in the world of Thrash Metal – the fast tempo rock music that De Gea is known to be a big fan of, but it’s not likely he’ll get his way.

De Gea ftw!

De Gea is a diamond.

He has done better than I expected this season. Superb at times. The odd error should be expected, and they seem to be getting rarer and rarer.

Top bloke too, by all accounts. I hope he is here for years and years.

 I can imagine him in a mosh pit.

David De Gea has turned into a proper keeper this season. Why's that I hear you ask? Because he spends a lot of the time being angry... thats why. Everyone knows that real goalkeepers are just annoyed with the actions of everyone in front of them, and De Gea now has the confidence and ability himself, as well as comfort in the team, to be angry.

Long may it continue.

Slayer was like two decades ago, and a bit boring. Should go with Metallica, man.

The best NT in the world continues to call him up and he's been a fixture there for years. Del Bosque likes continuity, the reason De Gea is up now is precisely because of Iker's injury and that he's earned it. Still, it'll take a big change with one of the keepers ahead of De Gea to make the WC roster, IMO.

He's been a fixture with him being planted to the bench. You could literally replace him with any other spanish player and it wouldn't make a difference to his contribution on the pitch. De Gea will go to the World Cup if he's fit i reckon.

Unlikely...and bench for La Roja doesn't equate to not having utility...You dominate as long as they have, you don't alter that formula unless a drop in form, injury or a breakout player emerges

I'm trying to imagine De Gea doing the opening scream of Angel of Death, while stood in goal with a striker going one-on-one. Epic stuff.

A quick glance at the WhoScored ratings shows that the top keeper in the league this season has been David De Gea (6.99) and on closer inspection of his stats it isn't hard to see why. It's easy to say that the Spaniard will concede fewer goals (the third fewest in the division - 31) because of United's strength out field but the league leaders have actually conceded more shots per game (13.1) than each of the rest of the top 7, and even Southampton.

Many pinpointed the first leg against Real Madrid as the night that De Gea really came of age in a United shirt but in truth he’d been having an impressive campaign in the most part up to that point. Over his 20 league starts the 22 year old has faced 90 shots on target and made 70 saves. His overall save success rate is therefore 77.8% and the best of any first choice keeper in the league - Swansea's reserve stopper Gerhard Tremmel has saved just over 80% of the shots he has faced in 12 appearances.

From http://www.whoscored.com/Blog/ofnlhjjngespu0to5uhkca/Show/Player-Focus-Is-Joe-Hart-Really-Englands-Number-One where the Whoscored blog looks at Joe Hart and the other keepers in the league. This is no surprise to me whatsoever, his shot stopping has been key to accumulating a lot of points this season. And while hes made a few errors, so have the keepers that we've been linked to as replacing him like Begovic and Mignolet. But for some reason its ignored when they parry a shot into a dangerous area and the end of the career of De Gea when he does.

He's coming in leaps and bounds at the moment, fell more and more secure with him for every game! Imagine what a keeper he will be at the age of 28!!!

Such a shame we don't have kie to tell us that we should replace de Gea with Begovic or Reina anymore.

I remember when Kie said it wasn't certain that de Gea would be first choice for us, and that Lindegaard was better suited at the time. Also remember pundits saying we wouldn't win anything with a keeper like de Gea in goals, but somehow we find ourselves 15 points clear, partly because of his form, not in spite of it. He's been brilliant this season.

Some guy on Fox Soccer Channel, "Lloyd Barker", is arguing that Tim Howard has been the top keeper in the English prem this season. A bit too much praise for Howard, at least for me. De Gea has been masterful.

He's definitely won us a few points, it'd be a much tighter affair with someone less competent in goal. He hasn't really cost us any points with any of his errors, we still beat Newcastle for example in spite of his early mistake in the game and he wasn't at fault in any of the games we dropped points in (even though kie tried to blame him for Swansea goal).
