A lot of goalkeepers (A LOT) would have not moved and kissed that one goodbye.

It is a perfectly struck Free Kick... I don't think Mata could have hit it any better.

The Norwegian commentator mentioned something interesting; when VDS retired he had put on 10-15 kgs of muscles since the CL-final in 95.

When De Gea's bulked up it really could be fun to watch him. As long as he doesn't lose his agility that is.

Needs to put on some weight? Time to make DDG spend some time with Anderson.

top class save from the lad. And that was long distance shot. He has it in him and everything will come to place when he matures...

Personally I love him, I've never seen distribution so good from a keeper and I love that.

I don't mind a few mistakes from young players, especially a new keeper in a new country. I have no doubts that he'll be a superb keeper for us sooner rather than later. The more games he plays, the better he will be.

And repeat....

Had a fantastic end to the match. Showed what he can do. It is scary to think he is only 21. Big future ahead of him, and he is at the right club for it since we always give players a fair chance here.

Did he get a mention from Fergie in the post match interview?

Yeah...

“The save [by De Gea] from Mata’s free-kick was unbelievable. There were two or three other saves as well," he said.

“He's played his part and I'm pleased as we can see the talent in the boy. In three or four years’ time we are going to see all of that but at the moment he's made one or two mistakes but the introduction has been difficult for him. It's not what he was used to in Spain.

“Today he showed that he is ready to get amongst it. He's done a great job today."

On first seeing it I was like 'Wow' but I've revised my astonishment and have downgraded the save to very good. When the ball was struck he was actually on the move and pretty central so I'm not surprised he got it.

A few years ago Cech would have saved it ... not on today's form. He was seriously lame on a few of the shots. I though he could even have tried to pull the Rooney shot that led to the equaliser down and held it.

Yeah...

The man's a genius!

When they showed the save during the SAF interview it showed how bloody amazing it was.

Mata couldn't have hit it any better.

But you see that is what you would expect 21 years olds to do ... the athleticism is meant to compensate for the lack of (or raw) positional sense.

But he managed to anticipate where it was going, probably through the way Mata adjusted his body or where he was looking. If Mata had gone for the other corner De Gea would have been wrong footed. He almost coaxed Mata into aiming for that corner. Stunning save.

You're right ... it's smart thinking (thinking you'd expect from most) to be on the move as it will almost always give you a better chance (at whatever you're doing in football).

I don't think there was any doubt that everybody watching thought it would go anywhere other than towards DdG's top left. Still a very good save ... his best save for United to date.

Well I was more pointing out to the fact he is young and can only get better, rather than focusing on the save itself. He showed us the glimpses of what he can do, he just needs to be consistent and get used to the physical nature of the league.

Anyone else feel a little nervous about Fergie's repeated 'In 3 or 4 years time we'll see it all come together' remarks?

I know he's probably trying to take pressure off him but United need a great keeper now, not in 3 or 4 years time.

I think what he means with that sort of comment is that in 4 years time, De Gea will have hopefully hit his prime and will be up there with some of the best keepers around. In that time, we'll hopefully still have a competent goalkeeper on our hands.

Well he can only really improve that's for sure. Either way it was a very good save.

When I first saw that save I thought, yeah that's pretty decent, but upon watching the save again I've downgraded it to something every keeper in the premier league could do, and actually think he could have caught it.

Yes Pondlife, that is aimed at you. because if you can't see how impressive that save is and get behind a young foreign lad trying his best for your team, you're fecking mental.

If he was 31, yes, at 21, no.

Nope. De Gea is more than good enough right now and has performed reasonably well this year despite mistakes. The constant injuries in defence have not helped and neither has the silly rotation policy. In 2-3 years time once he has adapted to the PL, he will establish himself as one of the best in the world, until then he will 'only' be a very good GK.

No great surprise to see pondlife downplaying that save.

C'mon ... you lap it up. Somebody's got to play the bad guy.:D

I genuinely was wowed by it initially then after a few replays and time to digest I thought just a very good save, but nevertheless a very important one for him ad the team.

It still doesn't negate his other frailties mind, still it'll make him feel better about it all.

Well since you've 'asked' then I'll say that yes I believe most of the keepers in the EPL would get it apart from a few fat old gits like Friedel, Cech, Howard.

Caught it .... surely no one could have caught it unless they were using a giant special 'velcro' mitt ... don't you think.

The save was unquestionably top, top draw. Couple of other very good ones too. Lad looks like he could be one of the greatest shot stoppers ever to play the game.

To balance it out, though, he did make a ridiculously shit punch when he should easily have caught the ball first half.
And also... I don't know if I dare say this... a couple of sliced clearances, one of which could have been very dangerous. (Runs for cover as the DeGea's-distribution-is-the-best-ever crew attack)

To be fair, Maroon has at least mounted a coherent defence of his argument whereas all you've done is make it personal and insult him.

Check out Maroon's history, you don't debate with a guy that argued we should've bought Craig Gordon and has had a massive problem with De Gea from the start, as you can see here today, he has issues with De Gea.

Not really. There's a reason he was on the move. He started out very near the post to see Mata's run up. As soon as Mata went, so did DDG. He was on his toes, made the jump at the right time and pulled off a great save by saving it out to a corner.

I'm guessing that DDG knew exactly where Mata was going to place the kick, as David opted to use his right hand to push the ball away when it seemed more easy & more natural to use his left; he had more time to make that decision than if he'd been surprised by the kick's direction & placement.

It was a sensational save, not only was it an amazing save, but it was in injury time at Stamford Bridge, our come back could have been in vain, a keeper under pressure who looking at his punch early on was probably a bundle of nerves.

That save could effectively kick start his season.
