Don't think you can kill a darts players hunger mate,A few observations from this years tournament for me.
It feels like the old guard are going to slowly start fading away. They started out on tour probably averaging somewhere in the 90s. They've then in the last few years had to up that to keep up, and now players are regularly going well over 100, they haven't got the legs left to keep up.
Whereas a lot of the newer generation are still improving and can up their numbers.
Players like Wade, Anderson, Wright, Barney - it's difficult for me to see how they get close to another WDC Final. MvG is no spring chicken but it feels like he has a bit more time on his side, as do Price and Aspinall and a few others.
Tonight I believe is the first time 2 former Youth Champions will meet in the PDC Final. Straight away that's quite significant.
With Smith, I think a few people in this forum foresaw what happened to him. He was like the Jimmy White of darts, so desperate to win a major and when it looked like it would elude him he finally found a way to get it done.
I think that killed just enough of his hunger that I didn't consider him a major contender this year.
And coming on to Littler, I worry the same might happen to him. If he wins tonight, his world - which is crazy enough already after the last two weeks - will go absolutely nuclear.
He won't be able to move for TV & radio interviews for the next few weeks, he'll have people begging for appearances everywhere.
And the PDC will do everything in their power to make sure he's on the PL roster. Now he's said himself that he's not sure if they will and given his reasons. But realistically if he wins £500K then he's not going to be too bothered about pursuing any other aspect of his life in the immediate future i.e. education.
For someone so young it will be very interesting to see how he copes with the title of World Champion.
Darts is a very fast evolving sport and if you stand still for even a day there are lots of players out there only too happy to catch you up, and with all of his media commitments and additional travel etc. will he perform at the same level next year?
I don't know if anyone heard Paul Nicholson on TalkSport this morning (him and the rest of the TS darts team are brilliant by the way), he was saying how it's all going academy based now in each region so rather than going from pub to county to stage, there are darts academies producing players just like football teams do. So the competition year on year is going to become incredibly fierce and of an extremely high standard.
Don't think you can kill a darts players hunger mate,
At least no one other than Humphries.
I was kinda making a weight joke to be fair,Not all of it!
I just mean he was so obsessed with becoming a World Champion, like it was all that was talked about in the media.
And just like Judd Trump when he won his first WC a few years ago, I think there was an air of inevitability that it wouldn't spark an era of outright domination.
Both Smith and Trump are capable of winning their respective tournaments again but I never got the feeling either would go back to back because they'd put so much in to getting that first one, they then took their foot off the gas and perhaps didn't realise how hard it would be to hold on to their title.
I think Humphries will get over the line. Not because I think Littler will freeze, far from it, but Humphries has stepped it up a lot in the QF and SF and think that bit of quality and experience will see him through.
I’m with you here, Humphries to edge it, but Littler to take him to the wire.I think Humphries will get over the line. Not because I think Littler will freeze, far from it, but Humphries has stepped it up a lot in the QF and SF and think that bit of quality and experience will see him through.
I heard it’s free somewhere, maybe YouTube? Is this only on sky? Nowhere to watch for free?

Wasn’t the semi the first time he didn’t win the first set?I've noticed Littler is a slow starter. He's won the bull but I don't fancy him to win the first leg
Rubbish atmosphere. Have the prawn sandwich eaters from OT made their way to the Ally Pally?
Properly annoying and seems closer to the board than usual? Looks like the players have to go around him when they turn back. The scorer will need throat surgery by the end of this
It's ok he's retired after tonight. The scorer will need throat surgery by the end of this
Sounds like the offspring of Marge Simpson and Sean DycheThe scorer will need throat surgery by the end of this
