Seems to be making a comeback as a recreational hobby in the UK, and has exploded elsewhere. Littler has certainly served as an inspiration for people new to darts, and I think the prize money these days is going entice people who are just messing about for now to see how far they can go.
Don't know what kind of accessibility to good equipment you guys would have in NY/ The States, but yeah if you're even halfway serious about darts over here, you'll have your own set that are bespoke (due to how you put the components together) and feel the best to you. Any good dart stockist will have a selection of weights, metals, flights, soft and hard tips. None of that might mean anything to you, but if you do have a darts shop in your vicinity, where you get to pick up numerous darts and throw them, you'll immediately get a feel for what you have an affinity for, and you will find that your aim improves when the dart feels right to you. A good shop will also look at your form and tell you what kind of thrower you are, which will affect the weight of dart you need. We have shops like this:

Reason I'm telling you this is because once you feel the right dart, you'll get more competitive with yourself, and as soon as that happens, you'll get more competitive with others, which is fun. Throwing darts and them actually hitting where you aimed is a big leap, and then making the jump up to actually being able to throw trebles and doubles or see out a game is another leap still. It's quite addictive once you get the hang of it, especially if you have opponents who are around your level or a bit better.
Rock up at work one day with your own, bespoke darts with a little practice behind you and wipe the floor with 'em!
