Danny Welbeck

I've always liked Welbeck and I was disappointed when we sold him. Not because I thought he'd be a starting striker for us, but I felt - and still feel - that at the time he was well capable of being a good squad player for us. But injuries look to have really destroyed him. So I think it's a bit harsh that people are piling on now, taking the piss when the reality is that he did pretty well for us and is clearly not the player he was, rather than this being proof of him never having been good enough.

No,you are wrong. Injuries have nothing to do with it. He was always like Mkhi. Once in a blue moon, if all the stars align, he will contribute. But when you need him? he will piss his pants.

Gallops gallantly to nowhere...

I remember that some people believed he may break Rooney's records..
.

What a load of bollocks. Rooney just broke the record last year and Welbeck signed for Arsenal about 3 years ago. So people believed he will break Rooney's record before even realising that Rooney might set the record.

Great stuff as always from our newbies promoted after about 15 posts.

The proof that he was never good enough was that .. he was never good enough. During his time at United he had some decent games when played as a spoiler. But as a starting striker, he never once looked remotely good enough. People aren't piling on now. They're just pointing out what a lot of us knew, that he wasn't good enough. Injuries or not, proof is in the pudding - people were going on about how the price wasn't enough, how amazing he'd look at Arsenal etc, now that it's not happening, it's because of injuries. Maybe, some of us, including those who actually sold him, were right?

Feel for him. Had all the ability, except scoring goals. Could never push on, and injuries got the better of him.

Was clearly a good player, just didn't work out.

Everyone knew that Rooney will break all the scoring records. It actually took him longer than expected because of his decline in the last 3 years with us.

Shevchenko, Henry, Rooney...

Never ever rate him even when he was here , my 60 years old nan has better body balance than him at least she doesn't fall when nobody touching. he should try some yoga to fix it although it's probably too late now

He needs to go to a team like Newcastle or Watford to save his career.

 finally some United fans have taken off their rose-tinted glasses and have seen what an utterly shit player he is. £16m was an amazing price (for us), it keeps getting proven.

Everybody knew Rooney would eventually break the record before Danny left. Nobody knew he would drop off so drastically that it would take another 3/4 years for Wayne to do it but he was the record breaker in waiting

He's not good enough for Watford or Newcastle.

He needs to drop down to the Championship and even then he won't be a prolific scorer.

It must be so frustrating watching him play for your team. A footballer who can't move a couple of feet without wobbling and looking like he is about to fall over - eventually doing so.

If things are known by contrast, then he's that player that reminds us of the importance of the basic attribute of balance whilst running. Who knew that was even a thing before we watched Welé

He was a much better player under Fergie.

He's the kind of player that can only succeed if his manager is Fergie, much like many other players who were covered by SAF system at United.

I agree. Fergie just got more out of average to good players. Average players became good and good players, very good. The mark of a great manager.

He was still notorious for the same shit. Could look very good in the build up play but would fall flat on his arse when anywhere near goal.

Yeah but he was more effective doing what Fergie asked of him. SAF knew precisely how much pressure to apply to individual players in order to extract a higher level out of them. Wenger, especially at this late stage of his career, appears completely clueless in this regard. Arsenal's squad solidarity is in the gutter, which understandably means the individual players are all underperforming. Just look at what has happened to Lacazette and Aubamayang already. They look like they have lost their enthusiasm and desire to fight.

Strange. Sir Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho, Arsene Wenger and several England managers all seem to rate Welbeck highly, whilst the Caf 'faithful' think he's a steaming pile of shite.

Who to believe?

LVG. He realized Welbeck is shit and sold him. I have not seen any striker who trips himself so often when he is 1 on 1 vs goalkeeper. I think, when he is 1on1 agasint Keeper, his heart must be pumping like he is going to die there.

Regarding managers rating him highly, they like workhorses and fancy playing them in big games. I dont know if they indeed rate him highly, but I do believe the managers like SAF/Jose wouldn't have sold him and kept him as 4th choice loyal striker in the squad, and would play him in big games.

Haven't seen a player falling on his arse so many times. He is a good player in build up play, good touch and pass in tight spaces, got pace, links up well. But his lack of balance is just unreal for a PL player. Slightest of touch from defenders and he will fall, sometimes even after passing the ball.

Talk all you want but you got to credit LVG in cleaning up our dead woods (though he added some by himself)

Alternatively i think he would have been a good squad player under Jose.

That just proves he was very promising, I can't see there anyone mentioning Rooney's record.

I don't remember anyone talking about that record that much 3 years ago, let alone people mentioning Danny will breeak it.

I was amused by reactions from pundits and both set of fans (Arsenal & United) on the day we sold him. It was almost like we were selling Arsenal a "Ronaldo", there were lot of talks of how United have lost their "identity" or how Wenger will be the right manager to bring the best out of him. The truth is Welbz was never good enough to be starter for us, I still believe had SAF benched him and played Berbatov more in 11/12 we would've won the league that season.

Good workhorse, poor finisher.

Good point! I remember he would get into goal scoring positions because of his athleticism but would hardly convert those chances. Also the slipping, as numerous posters have pointed out..unbelievably frustrating. I'm so glad we do not have to deal with him anymore.

People complaining about United fans 'enjoying' his failure need look no further than the Mkhi thread to see just how insufferable fanboys/media can be when we sell their favorite player. Mkhi had one good game for Everton the week after he left and the thread became a cesspool of how we made him shite and he will go on to become a beast under a 'more attacking unit'. Thankfully it didn't last long at all. With Welbeck he had a few good weeks and he was Wele, next Henry and we had sold our soul. I'm pretty certain if he has a good game next week and scores a goal some insufferable twats on here will still spout that' we should have kept him' nonsense.

There were United fans that got so much shit for even suggesting the likes of Cleverly and Welbeck weren't that good.

I remember he left us as he wanted to play in the striker position and wasn't keen on playing on the wing for us. Any idea where he's playing for Arsenal?
He'll have finished playing by his early 30s imo, his body has took a battering with injuries, even when he only just broke through at United he was getting muscular injuries.

Rooney eyes Manchester United scoring record after Arsenal hat-trick

August 29, 2011 | 12:57pm

MANCHESTER, England — English Premier League soccer star Wayne Rooney was targeting Manchester United’s all-time club goalscoring record Monday following his hat-trick in the 8-2 demolition against Arsenal.

The England international moved into the franchise’s top 10 with his triple strike at Old Trafford on Sunday as he surpassed United’s former prolific Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Rooney, 25, now has 152 goals for the Red Devils and set his sights immediately on breaking club legend Bobby Charlton’s record 249-goal haul in United colors.

“I was aware I was one off 150 before the game,” Rooney said. “I asked how many Bobby Charlton scored. Giggsy [Ryan Giggs] said I had another 100 to go. That is a target. Hopefully I will do it in the next few years.”

Do you know that Henry was MORE prolific scorer than Rooney? In 369 games with Arsenal, he scored 226 goals (0.612 goals per game). Rooney, in 559 games for us he scored 253 goals (0.453 goals per game).

And people were comparing Welbeck with Henry, the more prolific scorer!!!
